i think it depends on how tired ot tired he is. it happens with me way too often! most of the time i get into discussions near the end of the day, when i'm pooped out of my brain, and just wanna shut down or autopilot, so having to force an argument out of me in that state of mind is..... well it gets rough, and the moment i wake up the next day is an instant facepalm fest!

As a biology teacher, who already has his biology degree, I always get hurt when people misrepresent science. But remember, the boiz are not scientists. They haven't used their science education in quite a while. And for the average person, they weren't too bad. I have heard far worse, from far more ignorant people.

And those who work at shelters. They have to deal with fanatics who think kill shelters are the absolute worst without really thinking through who the hell has funding for sheltering the millions of abandoned pets just here in the U.S. Are they going to contribute enough money to make every shelter a no-kill shelter? No? Shut the hell up, then 🙄. Also, dark side of a no-kill shelter: It means they have to turn away animals that might need serious care because they're stretched to capacity. Anyone else comes in...and someone will need to die to accomodate them. And workers who work at "kill shelters" often suffer deeply emotionally and mentally for it. There's the euthanasia, the people bitching that they're not doing enough for the animals, the animals that they are working their asses off to save...and then they lose them. It's a lot. "Compassion fatigue" ends up happening to a lot of shelter workers where their desire to help as much as they can but are bombarded with negativity ends up causing emotional trauma and many quit. So, now these animals have less people available to help them. This pairs into neutering as well and those who espouse flawed logic about how all animals want to have offspring and "How would you like it if someone neutered you?" Humans don't go into heat. We have fertile periods and sex drives, but not a strong compulsion that we must heed and procreate. Because dogs and cats, as the biggest examples in shelters, do have reproductive drives that are almost never ignored and they reproduce with multiples, it creates a lot of animals very quickly. Humans usually only have one child, with anything more being outside of the norm. It's not common for a cat or dog to only have one puppy or kitten. And not only that, with many breeds, the more times they get pregnant, the bigger their litters. Ever seen a KZfaq channel that brags about breeding dogs? Ever wonder how their litters are often so big? That's why. And no, not all of those puppies will be kept by the owners who initially buy them. And that's just breeders, imagine this happening to stray animals. The number is astronomical. Spaying and neutering is a must to keep some sembelance of control on the number. Cats do alright living out on the street but there's the argument to make about them decimating wildlife with their hunting, spreading disease, and their much shorter life spans than indoor cats. Dogs...become dangerous when they're allowed to become feral, as they often will form packs that attack humans. And for both, rabies becomes more likely. Dogs also have a closer affinity with humans and have been bred to be pets. They're used to being provided for. I say this as there are some who feel all pets should be left to roam free and that's just not realistic. I've never seen a city with a large stray animal population where the city and animals looked well taken care of. So, you have all of these ideologies based on emotion and opinions, not fact, being hurled at shelter workers and many just end up having enough. They quit the jobs they thought they loved. Or they check out on life. We lose some amazing, loving souls because of it. When Joey said he's never met a depressed person who works with animals, shelter workers likely would agree to disagree. Hannah, from the channel Kitten Lady, has a great video that is much more polite than my language that she did a few months ago on the burnout of shelter workers and how fanatics and ignorance is pushing workers away.

@@bulwark2656 I would definitely say look out for schools with good research programs and a wide variety of animal related classes. So NOT school with just a general biology degree and only a handful of zoology courses. Schools that have zoology, animal biology, wildlife conservation, evolutionary biology, they're all very analogous degrees. I went to UC Davis which actually had all of those degrees! Once you get to a university, look up the faculty of your department and find a professor whose research interests you. Professors will have their research interests and publications on the faculty listings and most even have websites nowadays! You don't even need to know the professor. A lot of times, they're looking for undergrads to help out anyway, so just send them an email talking about what you like about their research and ask to join their lab. That's what I did with my lab and by the time I graduated, I had a senior thesis and published my research! And if you join a lab and you don't really like it, don't be afraid to move to a different lab! College is supposed to be a time where you figure out what you want to do! I started off in an avian lab and I realized I really didn't like working with domesticated animals so i moved to a lab that worked with my school's entomology museum and I've been in love ever since! Hope that helps 💕 Also scholarships, apply to scholarships!! Even in your senior year of hs! I can't stress this enough. There are so many scholarships available to students and lot of people just don't know about them.

Ok. But why? I'm curious what possesses people to keep animals that can accidentally kill them. Like a dog can kill you... but trust and believe it would be on purpose and a fight you could win.

A big pit bull can take down a pack of coyotes alone and easily kill a human. The strongest breed of dogs in the world can kill a lion in a fight. The reason dogs are kept with little fear of danger is because they are domesticated to people(to the point of developing human like facial twitch muscles) Deadly insects on the other hand never really makes for a good pet or companion.

The homebrew remedies are based on experimenting and science, like Garnt said, rubbing salt on a wound does actually help disinfect it, vitamin C helps your immune system fight of flues, rubbing wasabi on wounds has a positive effect cause it fights of bacteria and so on. It's like the 100 stories in Dr. Stone, something humans figured out A LONG TIME AGO, and just passed it to their offspring through fun stories and riddles and shit. So Connor was 100% wrong in everything in those discussions, even though he did portray his feelings pretty well.

YES! I loved the way Connor described science and how it actually works. There's no proving anything, there is just removing doubt as much as possible. That's why we use terms like statistically significant, strong correlation, etc. But people don't get that science isn't 100% all the time, and that's the beauty of it! There's always more to learn or improve upon!

That's why we need to have some transparency in funding

Most people were educated in a way that propose science as a concrete understanding of the universe, so the way of thinking amongst general public that science equal truth, and the rebellious attempt to discard science both emerges quite naturally. Also despite most scientists having no political interest, it dosen't mean it can't be influenced, like how tobacco company hire researchers to publish favorable reports, or how Soviet government for unknown reasons forbaded the research of genetics, to see what's credible one must look at how a particular research is done, but that's out of the range of competancy of the general public and the gatekeeping work have to be relied on scientific community, which cause the blackbox thing. On a side note, my personal experience on Physics tells me that getting funding is still a somewhat marketing thing, most research are not that groundbreaking and the significance might vary over time, and its common to see people competing on the same topic, so to convince your sponsors that its worth the money you have to make your proposal very convincing and attractive, surely its still base on the truth of nature of the study, but you have to put effort into emphasising how important it is, which often resulted in an overstatement of your importance. And there are also hacks to go around the system for resources, one of my professors publish a lot of paper on IEEE journel, like 40-50 a year in a three year row, he wasn't the major author for most of the time and the amount of significant contribution are not that different from other reseachers in my uni, but due to his publication output he got promoted very quickly from post-doc researcher to professor, which of course also granted him much more oppotunity and resources, on the other hand one of the post doc researchers in my uni was doing niche research on low dimensional quantum systems, his publications are mostly in Nature but only has publication once or twice a year, he has done a few very significant research in the past few years, but he go promoted very slowly despite all the success.

I mean, that's the paradigm of falsification that all modern science builds upon. No theory is true, they are only not yet proven wrong thus the best we have. You can read more on that if you look into Karl Popper who was a figurehead of that paradigm shift.

Not really. That's just logic (process of elimination). Science is about understanding the world through forming a rigid, educated guess to explain a phenomenon, then seeing if that guess holds up in practical experiments involving that phenomenon. Science is woefully inadequate in a lot of human related things because of that. Humans change, therefore much of sociology/psychology can become rapidly useless as societies change. Statistical based sciences are the LOWEST form of science, as they are easy to manipulate and can be used to obfuscate the understanding of a phenomenon, another thing sociology and psychology suffer from. That's why both of them have a replication crisis every generation or two, as the BS eventually gets challenged. If it's not a hard science, I can guarantee you that MOST papers in that area are wrong about at least one thing they say, and there's no easy way to tell what. This is why authoritative science-ism must always be challenged. Science is not about what has most evidence, it's about what is most accurate. And that means even one person could have it more right than the consensus, yet be silenced by consensus. As has happened over and over again in science communities. Science will be the basis on which all governments will cement their authority, from here on in. It is the best way to achieve classical fascism. Source: Am a published researcher in a hard science.

Yeah, I feel like Connor is dismissing some of these things way too confidently. Manuka honey is refined into medical grade honey, which is used in wound dressings and medicine by actual hospitals, due to its anti-microbial properties. Vitamin C (and plenty of other vitamins/minerals) are known to "improve" the immune system etc., because they are actually vital for various functions of the body. It's very possible and actually common to have vitamin deficiencies and therefore also have a weakened immune system, so it is incomparable to just drinking water. You wouldnt really know if youre getting enough vitamin c in your diet, but dehydration is very easily recognized.

Homeostasis is important, also ancient Egypt used to use honey as an antiseptic I also like darker coloured honey, it tastes better ^_^

I'm not sure I buy this. Sounds like the kind of thing "crunchy" companies try and sell you. Usually the case is it's either completely false, and or only partially true. I know manuka honey is antibacterial, but if it were really all that effective, hospitals would be using it. All I'm saying is I doubt that's the whole story. Also the paper I DID find did not look very good. Usually when it says in the sidebar "share on facebook/twitter" that's a red flag

However, the majority of supermarket honey has been pasteurised and blended to produce a consistent flavour across batches. This gets rid of all of the health benefits. As for Manuka, it has a high mgo content which is what makes it good for you, however it's like olive oil in which there's a massive counterfeit market and false labelling. So you can only really get the benefits if you buy direct from a local beekeeper.

I thought the entire point of salt for preservatuon was that it absorbs all the moisture and thus creates an environment where it is hard/not possible for bacteria to either propogate or live.

That's why it hurts so much when you get water in your nose, the cells are actually dying from the salt concentration difference (osmotic pressure) of the water compared to the insides of the cells

It can be a temporary disinfectant if nothing else is available. Like if ur lost in the woods or in a post apocalyptic world and have no first aid. Removing the salt with water after using the salt to clean ur wound would be the right to do. You dont leave it on, that would make things worse.

Actually humans shouldn't lick their own wounds, human mouths have some of the worst bacteria for that. While saliva does help for all animals (humans included), because of the large amount of "bad" bacteria in the mouth of humans that is pretty dangerous. That is also the reason why you should immediately get medical attention or even go to an hospital, when you get bitten by another human if it punctures the skin.

I'd also argue it's better than leaving dirt and debris in the wound. However, obviously as humans we can just wash a wound and put on a plaster but you know we are animals and naturally don't have hospitals etc.

Yes and no, Antivenom is traditionally made by collecting venom from the relevant animal and injecting small amounts of it into a domestic animal(micro dosing). The antibodies that form are then collected from the domestic animal's blood and purified. Versions are available for spider bites, snake bites, fish stings, and scorpion stings.

Think of anti venom kinda like a blood transfusion(except minus the blood) from another mammal who has been intentionally dosed with venom. I am sure you could do it on a human also but I don’t think they do usually.

Yeah, snake handlers in India I think deliberately get bitten by the snakes they handle to build immunity. They actually inject venom into horses to make antivenom. Veritasium recently made a video on this.

There's a great story that took place in around early 1900's where the trend was to develop a mathematical theory for science to refer to in science papers. "unified theory" became a kind of buzz word, with theoretical physics becoming a big institutional field emerging in academics. If you were the person who came up with a theory that could "unify" all the different fields in one set of mathematics, you'd be a god. And then a jewish guy who's in love with his sister writes a paper from his patent clerk office about running on beams of light, and while I think his way of explaining physics in simple metaphor was beautiful, people at the time were livid, furious, and like honestly upset. That was the reaction at least, I think they were just projecting negativity. We would go on to dissect this mans brain, and find absurdly healthy connections between different parts of the brain (glial cells), he was definitely brilliant. It was a very toxic time culturally speaking due the proximity of TWO world wars. He really did come up with a clever way of unifying the different fundamental principles through relativity, his first publication changed the world. Without that understanding of the interaction between energy and matter, humans at the time couldn't have hoped to even dream the idea of an atomic bomb. It would take a lot of brilliant minds, but the foundation starts there, with relativity.

einstein, himself, did refute the idea of quantum physics too. A lot of scientists can get very stuck on how they view the world, and forget the basics which is that science is a tool that helps us understand the world around us, and as the tools and the user have a wider range of understanding, we get to see even more shit surrounding us.

Known across cultures since the dawn of time. Also, Western OTC and prescription drugs are often derived from something in nature.

Wasabi is more like paste right, unless I've just never seen liquid/vapor wasabi? And does the allyl isothiocyanate content of wasabi enough to even have an effect? Like how (drinking) alcohol can be used to clean a wound but only in certain higher concentrations, like you wouldn't pour beer on a wound right even tho that still has alcohol in it. Lastly, do any of the other components in wasabi not cause complications/infections that it makes the antimicrobial property kinda moot? I hate to be that guy but yeah just like connor said, just because that 1% that it might work doesn't make it viable. I'll get back if I find some answers to my own questions.

@@idiosyncrasy7703 Wasabi is made by taking Japanese Horseradish and basically grating it. Sometimes they grind it down to a fine paste, mix it with water, etc. Fresh grated Wasabi probably doesn't have any bacteria or viruses you might introduce by putting it on a cut. Not sure about store bought. Given that, it can only help if it has any allyl isothiocyanate content. Even if that means just killing very few microbes. So long as putting the Wasabi on the cut isn't itself poisonous, no reason it would hurt you. Of course, that's assuming you don't leave it on too long. Rather online companies have their own people who do that job, it is important to keep that stuff in-house because of accountability. KZfaq for example can be used because some asshat upload a video of a murder and it wasn't caught by KZfaq.

Well it depends on the Toxin, you can’t become immune to all poisons or venoms by micro dosing yourself, for example arsenic will most definitely kill you once you pass the lethal dose threshold no matter how much you have micro-dosed, also I wouldn’t trust a historical account fully of something like that, they are often heavily embellished.

I highly suggest researching Toxicology if you are interested in this subject, scenes like the one in Zoro for example are misleading and stories often embellish the efficacy of micro dosing toxins. Wether fictionalized or historical accounts.

Lastly it’s highly possible this king you named just didn’t take a lethal dose in the first place.

If you’re aware of the poison used you can look into the likelihood of the story being true or false by seeing the lethal dose and of course the effects on the body, to see how generally survivable it is or not.

Funny thing is in specific cases the myths do have some truth, bacteria grows in wet places so theoretically having wet hair for a long time could grow bacteria and get you sick but highly unlikely to happen, the stomach one is way more unrealistic like you would need to stretch your actual organ past it’s size limits by filling it up so much so that one is very nonsensical, the last one is also pushing it but theoretically you could cause a muscle spasm like for example a Masseter muscle spasm and get lock jaw but there is lots of variables to that like dehydration and calcium and chronic muscle problems and maybe it’s psychosomatic etc. but usually these wives tales and folktales and myths are just misunderstandings or oversimplifications of specific problems or cases.

And sometimes these are more metaphorical and related to cultural and social issues of the time.

I don't know about others, but personally, I feel this way. I don't watch television much these days, but I listen to podcasts and KZfaq videos in the background alot, most of it being either trash taste type content, medical content, true crime or just random stuff. I find, each case that I dive into, has helped me be more aware of my surroundings and such. However it has also made me insanely paranoid of near everything😩 but most people in my physical life don't have a care in the world about their surroundings or any threats so I feel it's an ok level of paranoia, given I've been stalked multiple times😅

I get that,especially for women, there were some many times in the podcast they spoke about their friends who watch it for that reason,but that doesn't really address the: becoming desinsetized to shit. Getting numb to watching videos that make death be a reality show,that interviews and sometimes bothers people who've lost their loved ones,just so they can make entertainment of it. I get that there are other benefits for it,but still. (I'm sorry for my terrible English,I'm not a native speaker.)
