This video was perfectly timed. Sometimes it can be really difficult to find motivation when it feels like you’re putting out amazing work, for 170 followers and 20 likes, but I guess it’s just about keeping at it

Before photography, I used to do a lot of Graphic Design. I eventually learned to just give the client what they want. Life is easier that way and not everything will make it to your portfolio.

Totally agree on the giving with no expectation of something in return, however, the one issue I’ve run into is sometimes those individuals become accustomed to receiving in a regular basis to the point it becomes borderline entitlement. I’ve had to break ties for this very reason which was unfortunate. 😕

First point is my number 1 thing. I get so demotivated to even get started and turn this into a career because I’m constantly comparing, I’ve been into photography for a solid 7 years and just never made anything about it because the fear of judgement from other creatives, but I have to make that jump and can’t think like that!

Glad I came across your channel again. I was following my favorite photographer youtube channels religiously but then fell off watching youtube videos for a while. I've been putting my photography to the wayside to focus on 'side hustles' that aren't really making me happy. Knowing that the reason I'm not doing as well as I could be is because I need to make it a priority comes off even more apparent hearing it come from a third party I respect. Going to be taking your advice into heavy consideration and follow through! thanks for the great and gritty-real content we need to hear.

Points well made man.. That «trying to get ahead» mindset is something to be aware of and reflect around. Important to think about the good things youve made for yourself and what youve learned from them. So easy as a creative thinking youre not good enough for whatever reason. Anyways, really enjoying your videos and thoughts around the creative process.

The timing of this video was beyond awesome! I had this idea that I could not quite figure out how to put into a plan that made sense. To then on top of that see something that added a real curve ball that made me wonder if I had even just gone down a whole wrong path completely. I didn't mind the time I invested in the idea. I had fun with that! I just felt sad I couldn't figure out a way to share it. I watched your video, and suddenly I saw, not only how to share what I was so excited about, in I hope a fun way. But in a way that just gave me a whole new idea for somewhere along the way in the future. So huge thank you 😊

Love this Evan! I'm fairly new to photography, I'm 38 and came to it a bit late in the game but I love it! I'm studying an HNC in Photography and I'm in total student mode, but it's great, can't believe I've not got in to photography sooner. I love the craft and I find KZfaq channels such as yours so helpful and so informative. You're advice and tips are like gold dust, thanks man, keep up the good work Bud. Liam

You’re not alone, I’m also 38 and got in to photography last year. It’s never too late to start something especially if it’s something you’re enjoying and is good for you.

Is never too late. I have known well known local photographer that started to pick up photography right after retiring from 9-5 job and started making income 2 years later. I am 38 too and is making a return to photography in a new country and new branding. Don't let your age be a something you should worry about, just focus on your goals and motivation.

Great video buddy... this did me the world of good. Another observation that helped me: I hadn't really spent much time looking at other photographer's work, and when I discovered Sean Tucker the other day - looking through his gallery really helped instill a new confidence in me, to post more and not be so worried what people will think... like you were saying here... it's so important... and so liberating.

Driving into my creative ambitions has been liberating and terrifying. Slightly before I graduated college, I had mixed emotions as to how I wanted to take on life. Doing both work and “work + play” sure takes a toll on self and our perceived reality. Hearing this was definitely reassuring and helpful

Great advice. Thank you, Evan. I’m introverted as a person. Don’t like attention, but my artistic side is very loud. A lot of people love it & a lot of people hate it (although I feel like it’s a jealousy hate). I get self conscious because as it is, it’s already loud & drawing attention but it’s who I am. It helps to hear the “f the haters” advice.

I remember I met Evan at an event in Atlanta in 2017 (I still keep the selfie I took with him). It was a very key moment for my photography because back then I was, just as he said, in that phase of following trends. In fact, I had been a fan of his work for a while, watching his videos and trying to mimic that "Evan5ps look". Took me a while to learn the difference between trying to mimic his work to learn from it and find my own style. A few years later and I feel fond of what I do, I love my street photography, the colors that catch my eye, the textures I find whenever I shoot down the street and I finally feel it as actually mine. Whatever I shoot is something that I enjoy for myself foremost, and not just shooting tons of models with glasses on with tons of bokeh around them or whatever is trending at the moment to appease likes and engagement in my feed. I enjoy my own journey and taking a moment to reflect makes me realize there's so much more I can still do to make it even more my own. Great video, keeping it real

I think this is great an totally relatable, I love the inspiration from seeing other success though and I think if you did a video on giving people advice from there photos or what people send you for those who feel like there getting no where and are on the edge of giving up see some one like you giving them a boost or recognition would be inspiring as well for others . I agree with this video and a perspective that I have on this aswell that I tell myself is.. you don’t know that other persons story, there’s a possibility that the person that is finally getting a taste of success maybe worked harder than me, or maybe had a hard life their entire life until finally a moment they get what they deserved that’s positive in their life. We get caught up on the idea “we deserve this or that” but life doesn’t owe us anything and none of us should have the mentality that we deserve. Just keep going and I’m sure eventually anyone will make it to where they want to be aslong as they stay consistent and determin their butts off

I tell myself the following statement alot: (because I'll get down in the dumps if I don't) "If they can do it, so can I" or some variation of it. It's so important to maintain a mindset of "we're all human and generally all capable of great success" (whatever that looks like to the individual)

After leaving the newspaper industry (a final career for me) and entering retirement, I sought to change my way of shooting. After carrying around a pair of camera bodies with tele and wide zooms along with a couple of primes, I sold it all and decided to pursue a one camera, one lens concept following in the steps of my idol, Cartier-Bresson. Tried using the Fuji X100S with the auxiliary telephoto lens but could not get comfortable with the leaf shutter lens. After nine years, I decided to sell my pair of X100S bodies and am currently waiting on my faux "Cartier-Bresson" setup, a Fuji X-Pro2 and a 35mm f2 lens. Both are weather resistant which I wanted so I feel comfortable in inclement weather. I am still challenging myself with the one camera one lens challenge but, since like you, I am shooting for myself and not for profit.

My biggest mistake/best thing I could have done was, after having my whole gear set stolen, switching systems completely. I hated it and I looked down on the tool just because it wasn't specifically for me. So, I realigned my mindset and did great work within that system. Still switching back but it was really important moment for me as a creator.
