The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)

My knowledge of the 1959 candidates tournament continues to grow. Soon, I expect to be able to wield it like the Force. Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of knowledge of the 1959 candidates tournament.

4:00 -- At depth 30, the engine only grants +0.3 to White after g4, and -0.2 to Black after Bg5. In practice, both moves lead to draws with correct play. 6:24 -- While the engine is initially enthusiastic for Black, given sufficient crunch time, it eventually resolves that, in this position after Black's Bd4, that the White responses of Kh2, a5, g4, and Qe2 are all drawing with further correct play by White. Rd3 was a blunder.

Agadmator, I watched most of your Q&A video and I didn’t see this question answered. If you do another such video, can you tell us: why you thought you could be so successful making chess videos on KZfaq? There are so many players stronger than you doing this already. Of course, for some reason (I’m not sure why) yours are the best. Did you predict that your personality and style could be successful? Even though you’re not a GM or otherwise famous/successful chess personality? Love the channel. I watch every day before work.

If Keres pushed his pawn to G4 instead of Bishop to G5, he might have won the game. If he'd won the game, he'd have won the tournament! If he'd won the tournament, there'd be no Tal verses Botvinnik in 1960!! That wonderful world championship match which perhaps sealed Tal's legacy as one of the all time greats. Thankyou Paul Keres for Bishop to G5!!!
