This clip starts with a scene in the officers' club where an instrumental version of the song is played in the background then moves to the enlisted club where a rowdier version of the song is sung

A completely, thoroughly John Ford western, even if they were on PTs. Robert Montgomery directed some of the scenes, if I remember correctly. Ford and Montgomery - Navy men, combat tested. Ward Bond had buggered his leg during filming, so they adapted that to his character and gave him that primitive crutch. Gotta watch it again. Lots of computers, but Midway (2019) is a great piece of history. And so is Tora, etc. Gotta love watching compacted and condensed history to get through it, though.

They Were Expendable. A Rock-Solid John Ford movie with the usual, stalwart cast. Notice they're ordering San Miguel beers. Donna Reed at her most exquisitely, stunningly sweet and vulnerable. More so than Wonderful Life. Oh, we can't go back to Subic, where they mix our wine with tubig. Tubig is Tagalog for water. Those pre-war white choker uniforms musta been damned uncomfortable in the Philippines.

What is the name of the Navy song that is prominent in this film? It's sung in the opening credits and is a recurring theme throughout the movie. Words start out, "To the end of the end of the world we'll go..."

Came here after watching the movie Mallari, I was born & raised in Zamboanga City & I grew up knowing the later version “no te vayas a Zamboanga” . Glad cause that old version was extremely racist . 😬

Ohhhh....I haven't heard the old song....I believe these lyrics are more or less family friendly G-Rated ...but it might explain the negative comments this video sometimes gets for allegedly being racist when as far as I can tell it isn't

I agree, it's a racist song it's referring (in an allegory way)to the natives as monkeys. this song and episodes should be removed from all that presents it as a joyous song. I just had a recent argument with one of the military groups who played it in their website. Song was written in 1907 a period when racism was at its height

What they are singing here is an adaptation of "No Te Vayas de Zamboanga" with an english version " Don't you go to far Zamboanga". This is what my late father has been talking to me of a song sung by its movie casts from one of his favorite films that is an insult to us Zamboangueńos.

I didn't get the impression that the film as anti Filipino. This scene starts in the officer club (managerial class) where a more high brow sophisticated instrumental version of the song is played. The scene then switches to the enlisted club ( working class) where the men sing the rowdy raucous lyrics. By the end of the film everyone is literally & figuratively thrown in the same boat & the officer versus enlisted class distinctions have been eliminated where everyone has to work & fight in the same conditions

@@sgabig By the end of the film everyone.... Do you mean by "everyone," the white folks? Or, at best, the occupying US military forces? I suspect that the Filipino people ARE the monkeys with no tails? I'll do a bit of research... I'll certainly be back if I discover that my suspicion was incorrect.

I AGREE. THE SONG IS REFERRING TO THE NATIVES AS MONKEYS. CLIMBING COCONUT TREES WAS A WAY OF LIVING FOR THE NATIVES AND THEY WERE MAKING A JOYOUS SONG OUT OF IT. IT SHOULD BE REMOVED ..TAKEN DOWN FROM ANYWHERE IT'S BEING SHOWN.
