The fact that a referee gets his own episode, that it doesn't feel out of place, and that we all clicked is a testament to the legend of this man

He commanded respect by his excellent performance and near perfect decisions. There will be no other like him. VAR will be redundant if all referees had his talent and abilities.

The only man who had VAR in his eyes.

The bald head. The eyes. The man. The respect of whole world. Pierluigi Collina. The Legend.

This guy was a human VAR back then, absolute legend

The only referee to make the cover of a football game. Colina is the true GOAT of referees. Refused to give in to corruption and stayed true to his character and integrity.

"Every time he looked at you, you expected a red card, unless he smiled in which case you expected a yellow card."

This dude cemented an image in every football fan's mind- The ideal refree! Fair, funny and friendly until you cross the line with him. The way he always stood his ground made us believe that while life may not be fair, as long as the big bald headed gentle Giant was on the field, the game would be!❣️

Me and my brother used to call him "Big Eyed Ref" because he saw everything. Legends don't always have to be players or managers!

As a german, i remember him the most for being the referee of the 2002 final between germany and brazil. Lots of times, world cup finals are very heated affairs and lots of people can lose their cool and even referees can be overwhelmed by that. But Collina did such an amazing Job in that game, probably making it one of the fairest World Cup Finals ever.

When me and my brother watched Euro we were stunned with his preciseness, brutal honesty. It felt like he would literally die for playing the game by the rules . Pierluigi gave goosebumps to us kids like some kind of ancient gatekeeper, all-seeing mastermind.

I don't follow football, but looking at the footage, I can tell that Collina is a man who can transition from friendly and charismatic one minute, to utterly terrifying and intimidating the next. That is talent.

The fact that he hasn't officiated football match for years now and people still call him one of the greatest referees of all time shows the impact he had on the football world. Still to this day I don't think there was as great and respected referee as he was.

Absolutely the best ref ever, reffing the game at its peak. Managing hard players, not the rubbish we call football today.

He definietly deserves his place between the biggest legends of football! Such a refree, such a man.

I used to call him Agent 47. A hitman on the pitch. Brutal. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a statue/monument of Collina coz there isn't another like him.

This guy earned my respect from the day when he just look dead straight to gattuso genero's eyes back in milan derby and said "dont fuck with me gattuso, if i start your career ends right away. You will do as i command here". Gattuso didn't had the balls to have a reply 🥰🥰

The fact that Collina is still known to this day as GOAT referee after 15 years from his resignations tells a lot about how much he left an impact on football He gave exposure to a role not many young guys thinks they want to play, I mean kids always dream to be Cristiano Ronaldo, but when he was around I knew lot of kids that wanted to be like Collina. It's sad that after him not many others became quite as impactful, with all respect for Frank de Bleeckere, Howard Webb and Markus Merk that I still remember to this day for being very good on their job.

Now that's a football legend! You don't have to be a player in a sport to command respect and acceptance. You only need to have integrity, love, dedication and honesty. Hats off to mr. collina & thanks for the video...I never would of known his background otherwise.

He’s such a good referee… Every game that i watched with him in it, he would make very good calls.. he was barely wrong. Best ref ever imo

i recently got into football the past 2 years and never heard of him. But i think the biggest takeaway was the fact he could not be bribed, i heard of the scandal before but the fact he probably knew his colleagues were taking bribes and he stood his ground is truthfully insane in terms of human nature. What a model of a man

This man is the definition of peak football, a just but also fair individual with a mindset of having the best outcome for players and the match itself for the fans, a true legend of the sport

My wife does not know anything about football and hardly watch any match except a few of those world cup final and yet she knows who is Peirluigi. This is how legendary he was.

Gave me chills when you told that he did his homework about which team and players are up against eachother and stuff they could do. I didn't know that and offcourse that makes him a better referee. He knows where to keep an eye more frequently. Subbed

Great Vid. I grew up watching so much European and International Football during his career. In the UK we could watch matches every week from Serie A. It was just as exciting to know he was refereeing as it was see the great games and players every week. You knew the game would be refereed perfectly. no other referee could control every game and every player so consistently.

In the world of sports, there are a lot of disputes regarding the G.O.A.T. status. When it comes to football refereeing - it is undisputed! Collina is the G.O.A.T.!

Collina just held the ultimate respect of the players, each and every game, even when tempers flared. Arguably the best ref of all time

All we could add is that he was never afraid of taking decisions. Especially on the pitch. I miss refferees like him. He was so ruthless and in the meantime so nice. I remember he officiated a game between Bulgaria - my homeland - and Belgium. The game was an Euro 2004 qualifier and was a crucial clash in the group. Bulgaria had 9(!) of their best players - especially Peev, Paĝin, Kirilov, Chilikov, Martin Petrov and Berbatov - with heavy injuries and right back Kishishev (who also feuded with the coach and left for a while) and striker Jankovic were banned for having received too many cards, while cruical midfielder Marian Hristov had just recovered from a broken leg and wasn't 100% fit too. In the end Peev and Berbatov were given injections, so they could play about 60 minutes. Bulgaria really was intimidated by the injury crisis and the fact Colina was to officiate the match. But he showed the players there was nothing that much to be afraid of. A Stiliyan Petrov own goal put Belgium in front right before half-time. In the second half Peev crossed to Berbatov for the equalizer. A few minutes later van Buyten converted a cross from a free kick, but in the 68th minute Bulgaria were awarded a penalty that substitute Todorov (who replaced the exhausted Berbatov) converted for 2-2. That penalty would have been missed by a lot of referees, but not Colina. Most would have said van Buyten simply smashed Manchev, because of their size difference. Not for Pierluigi though. After the game he congratulated the Bulgarian team for the fighting spirit, despite the obvious injury crisis.

Wonderful, wonderful job. I doubt anyone but you thought about making a video about Collina. It is fascinating how one man who's not a player became a football superstar without playing for a team!

Weird...was thinking of this referee few days ago and suddenly KZfaq randomly recommend this and popped on my screen. Respect to this man, every time i watched finals and he became refreee..no players in the field wanted to try to mess with him.

I've never been into football, hell my only experience with football was playing it at school, hating it and never ever giving it another chance. I've been more of a hockey type of person, but one thing must be set clear. This man clearly deserves what he has, referees in general are mostly overlooked, yet they are one of the most important ingredients in any sport where a referee needs to be. Really well made video and to think of that a referee makes it onto a cover of a football game? Only speaks volume of what a absolute class he must be at his job!

As Dutch I saw a lot of games of him and always had a laugh about his eyes players couldnt avoid. The best if I may say. No wonder he is/was head of FIFA referees. Great story.

That was a great informative video. I already had respect for him before but this video upped it again. BTW I think he also has R9's shirt from the WC 2002 finale (though I dunno if it was swapped. I just read in an interview with him he counted it among his most prized possessions because his daughter claimed Beckham's lol.) Also would a video about Lazio Pistoles, that's some insane stuff. Moggi as well, fits in the light of Juve having been raided recently by the police....
