Fraser's unintentional (one hopes) failure to call an obvious high sticking major and automatic game misconduct on Wayne Gretzky in a tied game six between the LA Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs still represents the worst most impactful refereeing decision of all time. Stephane Auger is the most corrupt official by far. I remember the Burrows incident quite well. So unprofessional. I would understand not giving Burrows the benefit of the doubt, but what he did should have gotten Auger suspended for the remainder of the year. I would imagine his commentary is abysmal.

I was a d coach for a high school JV team. I had multiple players complaining about a ref being drunk and smelling like booze. He also was interfering in plays and was doing odd things on the ice. Head ref was near our box, I politely told him that the boys smell alcohol on that ref. I was immediately kicked out of the game and got a 3 game suspension. While the drunk ref was allowed to continue. I was approached by a man I've seen at our rink once in awhile, he questioned my claim, I found out he was the president of USA Hockey, he followed that ref every game, and about 2 weeks he got him and discharged him.

It’s insane how the only people in the arena that are being paid to do a job (the refs) are the one with no accountability. I coached both my boys their entire minor hockey careers and have seen some disgusting stuff from refs. Here in Alberta there has never been a successful appeal against a refs call. That tells you something right there. They believe themselves to be omnipotent.

To me that felt like they felt like they "needed" to do it since he made very clear comments about the ref (and the NHL similar to other leagues don't want people to talk about bad ref calls), but would not put it higher because they knew he was 100% right. While they didn't have the balls to confirm that the calls where batshit crazy, it might be the closest you would have come to such a statement at the time.

Here in Germany I feel like we have alot of bad refs as well. Just 2 days ago I was actually angry since they did not call a blindside check, did not call a very obvious holding of a stick, but later called a high stick but overlooked that the player who got the penalty was being held at the same time. It was a high stick, but you also need to call the 2 minutes holding at the same time. And as it often is the case, that powerplay decided the game in the end. While the NHL clearly is faster and has higher skill level in comparison, it feels like the league and players improve every year while refs stay at the same level, which means it feels it is getting worse and worse. But what do I know, I am just a fan...

For those of you old enough to remember the Bobby Orr days, this was by far one of the most egregious calls in NHL History. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNd6gZtyrsmck58.html Wally Harris ejecting Bobby Orr for protesting an obvious non call. Written 4/1/2024 Stephane Auger, a name that once stirred considerable controversy in the NHL, remains a figure of intrigue and discussion long after his departure from the league. Auger's career as an NHL referee was marked by incidents that sparked debates on officiating integrity, player-referee dynamics, and the pressures faced by officials in professional sports.....

The worst thing about hockey games, or any other sport, is bad officiating. All calls should be assessed by the League in question and officials should be disciplined accordingly. The league should have the power to overturn a bad call during the game so that the officials don't ruin the game. That is my opinion and I truly believe that it would be a lot better for everyone to have officials accountable for their actions.

You should go over the Tim Peele incident. Also, Wes McCauley and his history of horrible blown calls and phantom calls. Or how about Justin St. Pierre? Here are a few quotes from NHL players when polled by The Athletic about the worst refs a few years back: "St. Pierre may be the most arrogant human being I’ve ever seen. It’s honestly like he hates the players. He treats everybody like shit." - a Central Division player. “[St. Pierre] is the worst. Bar none. Bar. None.” - a Metro Division player. “I hate picking [St. Pierre] because he’ll probably be happy if he wins it.” - a Metro Division player.

I called to my girlfriend "that's clearly not an offside, Tatar never touched the puck before the other guy came out and at one point every player's skates are outside of the zone" he went on air and said "that is CLEARLY an offside, there's no way this goal will count. We have the perfect exemple of a goal that will be overturned by Toronto". Turns out I was right and he looked dumb. I know it was not his job to call offsides in the NHL but come on...

I'd like to add a positive note and name my favorite ref whom usually was very level headed and unbiased IMO: Don Van Massenhoven aka the ref with the mustache. I think the NHL lost a very important referee when he retired. Nowadays I'd say Eric Furlatt does a tremendous job, especially when he works on Canadiens games because he shows absolutely no sign of bias whatsoever. Very good ref. I think the game is much faster than it ever was and it's very difficult for refs to see everything. IMO they should add one more ref, a retired veteran, who would watch the game just like we do on a screen and make the calls with some "electronic whistle" button or something, kinda like they already do when there's a goal and the puck somehow got out of the net without anyone noticing and the play continues. This or they add sensors to sticks, the puck, skates and helmets to keep track of player movement. But I'd rather have a more human aspect to it even if it meant more mistakes would be made.

One penalty inparticular Involving The Late Mike Bossy, who had Wayne Thomas beat, but he got tripped from behind. Hood didn't call a penalty or penalty shot. But both Trots, who was having the biggest night of his career, got revenge against Bruce Hood when he scored his 2nd goal of the night (5 total along with 3 points) on a breakaway, and Boss got his revenge by getting in between 2 Rangers and scoring his 2nd goal of the night. Game 7 in 2013 Blackhawks Vs Red Wings. Hawks climbed back into the series after going down 3 games to 1 and scored a beautiful goal with under 3 minutes left in the 3rd of game 7. It looked like it would be the game winning goal until it was called back because Brandon Saad got dumped into the bench and went to grab the Red Wings players jersey to brace for the fall (or he swung at him from his back) the referee literally called the penalty as the puck was entering the net and sure enough it was called back. It was a minor penalty for both teams and they are taught to wait to make the call if it’s behind the play & during a scoring chance. Instead he put his arm up as the shot was being taken and the Hawks were robbed. Luckily Seabrook called game in OT and the rest is history. Still the worst call I’ve ever seen.

When I was coaching there was a ref who was notorious in the league. My dad was the head coach and he wasn't generally rude to the refs, but he stuck up for his players. I guess the ref didn't like the comments about his blatant one sided officiating (calling a trip on a player who wasn't on the ice, getting a call deficit of like 1-4, missing a blatant head shot right in front of him resulting in a concussion) and gave my dad hit "warning" before the team was even on the ice. Needless to say, he got kicked out for a comment by one of the other coaches, not even his own. Never had a problem with any other ref. Some of these guys let that miniscule amount of power go to their head.

After the NSH VCR fiasco and the fallout I watched the papers closely for the next year and a half. I think that was the last time Auger worked on the West Coast. He may have had another game or two scheduled after the Vancouver game before going back east, but never crossed the Rockies again to work an NHL game. It was almost a full year before he was even assigned to work a Canucks game again when they went east. Not mentioned in this video was that after the league said 'nothing to see here' following the Burrows alllegations, the Canucks released video they had sent to the NHL from cameras at the arena to show that there clearly was a conversation. Burrows would have been the zen master of all time had he quickly written down what happened after the warmup, tossed it into an envelope and given it to a reporter with the instructions to open it only after the game.

The Joe West/ Angel Hernandez of the NHL. At least in hockey, you can "accidentally" get him back. They "get in the way of the play" a lot.

When the Flyers were on HBO for their Winter Classic coverage there was a game in Montreal, where a Habs dman went down to try to take the puck from Jagr and completely missed and Jags just tripped over his body and they didn't call anything. Brayden Coburn asked him "why wasn't that a trip?" and the guy was like, "He was trying to go around him..." or something like that which made absolutely no sense. The Habs got a tick-tac call and Lavy even said, "If they score on this PP, it's going to be on you!" of course the Habs ended up scoring on the PP and Lavy lost it yelling "TYPICAL!! MONTREAL TYPICAL!!!" Who was that guy?

It's gotten so bad when it comes to Refs/Umps saying a player said this or that, why don't they just put a microphone on every single official to record every encounter. That way there is an exact representation on what was actually said. Very similar to what almost every Police/Sheriff Depts now do. With all of the past "allegations" that the Officer said this or that or did this or that we now have video/audio proof of what actually went down. Sports can adopt that to protect both Players and Refs. They already "mic up" some players during games in every sport, do it for all of them already.

There was some recent games where the cancuks have had stupid calls against them the 17 goal wild game had call on elias lindholm where it was "roughing" (it was most certainly not) but other games since then have gotten some attention among fans.

Yes that was the poster child call from that game. The score was the story but the reffing was the story behind the story.

Andy Van Hellemond & Bruce Hood (now that we are in the 2 ref system) but Kerry ‘the hair’ Fraser was amazing too, he hated wearing that lid! Where are all the good refs?

Why would four frenchmen refereeing a game in Montreal be any worst than four english ones!!! It's effing insulting! Auger is bad and in the HOF of bad refs along with Kerry Fraser, Tim Peele, Paul Stewart and Chris Lee. One bad call that deserves more attention is from Andy Van Hellemond in the 1994 or 1995 Quebec Nordiques vs NY Rangers playoffs. The Nordiques were in possession of the puck for long enough time and scored a goal. Van Hellemond waived the goal off and gave a penalty. My memory is fading but I think the worst thing was that the penalty was given to NY but I could be wrong. Someone who reads this and knows more can enlighten me please.

I think I remember what you're talking about. It was Mats Sundin who had the puck. I do remember a horrible, horrible call made on Sundin, involving a goal, in the later Nordiques years. But IMO Van Hellemond was a pretty good ref compared to others. Just very strict sometimes, and he didn't seem like a guy who makes compromises heh.

I don't catch the refs name or remember their names for games. Personally though, I think the NHL needs to rework how the officiating is done. There seems to be a lot of bad refs that make some ridicules calls or no-calls throughout the season.
