Here is another goodie from the Golden Age of Hollywood animation. This one is notable as being the final episode in Coulmbia's long-running Krazy Kat cartoon series, which ended shortly after producer Charles Mintz was ousted in 1939. It was released as part of the "Phantasies" series in January, 1940. The Columbia Krazy, of course, bore little resemblance to George Herriman's classic comic strip character. In this cartoon he has a Joe Penner voice and is easily outsmarted and smacked around by the mouse. Rather a "routine" cartoon, yet it has some nifty animation and music as well as the charm most cartoons from this era possess.

Although I like the character design of this Krazy (more or less) this somewhat rushed toon is a sad way for Krazy to end his run. And meaning no disrespect to Joe ("You NASTY man") Penner, the voice characterization was not very compelling. This does look like an inspiration for Tom and Jerry, but their first outing, although released on Feb 10 1940, was already in the can by the end of 1939

Even the 1962 Krazy Kats, while closer to Herriman's concept, left a lot to be desired for fans of the original Krazy Kat.( When 15, I found a 1946 hardcover collection of Krazy Kat in my grandfather's basement. I have been a fan ever since and have many,many books of old Herriman strips.

This isn't the FINAL Krazy Kat short, News Oddities is, however the short is no where to be found online, and trust me, Ive looked. I don't know if it's lost, or nobody has even bothered to upload it. There is not even a picture or screen shot of it.
