How does red wine lead to an instant, throbbing headache?🍷🤯
🍻I’m not talking about a headache from being hungover, which can set in the next morning. This is something totally different and not due to overindulgence. 🍻
What’s even weirder, is that my friends who struggle with red wine headaches can drink the same amount (or more!) of white wine and beer with no consequences.
It truly seems to be something special about the composition of red wine! My first thought is that we need to dive into the specific molecules in red wine to solve this mystery. 🕵️♀️🧪
Reading through the scientific research into this headache mystery, several components of red wine have been implicated-histamine, sulfites, tannins and more.
BUT, the most recently published study points the finger at a totally different culprit.

✅What does a wine headache feel like? The only difference from a normal headache is that it can set in right after drinking a small amount of wine (within 30 minutes).
✅What’s the difference between a red wine headache and being hungover? A hangover headache will set in much later (about 5-12 hours) after drinking alcohol.
✅What’s the best red wine for migraine sufferers? You need to find a wine that’s low in quercetin. Unfortunately, this isn’t reported on wine bottles so it’s difficult to know before feeling the adverse symptoms. We do know that wines produced in Napa Valley are specifically high in quercetin and should be avoided.
