New Year, New Projects, New Addition! This week we are continuing to work on the silo build and break ground for the feed station. The best part is we finally get to bring home a new addition to our farm!

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

Off topic but since I have started watching some of the KZfaq videos of barbers/ beard trimmers doing their thing, it would be great to see Josh get a cut/trim on one of them. Good way to intro those who may not be aware of your channel and do the same for the barber 👍

Unsure if the holes are drilled in the right spot for proper alignment? An easy way to get a much better idea is to lay one end of the tarp at the edge of a line of drilled holes. Then steps far back, possibly to the porch of your home and assess the positioning from a distance. Alternatively, get a drone in the sky and look down at the positioning of the holes/tarp. You're doing great. Remember to take a little time to warm up in front of your wood burning stove.

Erin, from one editor to another, I am just constantly amazed at how good your story telling has gotten and all the little "aside" shots you do that always enhance the flow of your vids. I watch a lot of vids on youtube and I'm always interested in how the "films" are put together. Yours are always at the top of the list. Kudos for a job well done! The extra time you take with all the little details shows. I'm sure even those who have never edited anything, tho they might not notice each little thing, they know it's a level above just because of the look and feel and flow of the work. You and Josh make such a good team. You both have an attention to detail that is just amazing. Have a great year!! Oh, love the cow!!

Those little shots like the snow landing on the white down feather clinging to the bares stems in the grass... Shots like that make me pay more attention when it's just music playing. The animals all look so happy except for the naked necked turkeys. They just look cold.

Leon looks so majestic with the snow on his coat and that knowing look on his face🙂. Your new addition to the farm is a great choice on so many levels---the most important, of course, is that it is yours and your daughter's birthday present. Ellie always takes to new creatures with such enthusiasm and love that they just have to return it to her. Nice episode, y'all. Oh, and great 'save' on tractor tire, too. . . .

Happy Birthday Erin and Ellie. I've used the ratchet strap method for years. I have found that on tires that have 10 plys or more that have stiff sidewalls, that a inflated bicycle inner tube between the tire and wheel, lubricated with soapy water works better. Bike tubes are cheap and easier than using a ratchet strap that now is under a lot of pressure to release. I've seen the, spray starting fluid in the tire wheel assembly and igniting trick before, but I'm not a fan of exploding a tire feet away from me.

Happy Birthday Ellie & Erin! I said last week a dairy cow & she shows up this week, gorgeous cow, but didn’t expect anything less because beauty is your family, animals & home. I knew a family of 12 who had 1 cow & it supplied their needs daily. Carter will have a new chore & the cats will be supervisors with benefits. Fun to watch your adventurous lives expand! A great beginning to a new year.

Ellie’s enthusiasm for every aspect of life is infectious! ☺️ It makes me miss when my boys were little! Congrats on milk cow status…moving on up 😆 We have some prego Nigerian Dwarf goats 🐐 that should have babies in a few months if that sounds like a fun addition to your farm in the spring! 🌺 We are in VAcjust 10 miles or so from the WV line in Fulks Run. I really like your homestead and it helps me appreciate living on ours.

What a great birthday present! Happy Birthday Erin and Ellie!!! Glad you made the round trip safely! The milk cow is beautiful and I'm so happy she loves the little calf and they have each other. What a shocker to see Frankie looking so BIG! He isn't a pup any more. Leon seems to be adjusting to life on the pasture. Not loving it, but not bucking it either. Still misses not being part of the family. Great fix on the tractor tire. Carter is learning the ropes from you Josh! Smart to cover the holes. Not sure everyone would think to do that. Happy birthday Erin & Ellie. You can seal a tire bead onto the rim by spraying something combustible like WD40 into the tire and lighting it on fire. It’s called tire explosion bead setting. There are video’s on KZfaq. You can also use ratchet straps.

When I was a kid we had a Guernsey cow that produced almost 4 gallons of the best tasting milk a day. Needless to say we had lots of yummy homemade butter and cottage cheese growing up. I’ve done the ratchet-strap and “bazooka” trick to inflate tractor and other tires, and it’s always been a fight. Then my new favorite Tire Guy showed up to help, and he slathered that loose-bead section with a few pounds, of all things, canola grease. Kept the air in, the tire caught the bead, and he scooped up the grease for the next tire. Beats the heck out of that starting-fluid-and-a-match trick.

JudithB LOL! I received a Jersey heifer for one of my birthdays! She had never been handled, had horns and was due to calf soon. I was scared but got her use to eating in a stansion, and I brushed her daily. One day, there was a calf and it was time to start milking. I asked my neighbor in his 70s for help, he just pushed her to the wall, sat down and started milking. It was amazing! I named her Chance after the Waltons cow, and we became good friends over the years. Good luck!!
