Well if you remember in the beginning of the first book, for one thing, Percy's already on probation at school for doing something to Nancy, and he's had to jump from school to school since he started as a kid, so Grover was trying to stop him because he had already gotten in trouble a few times. At the end of the second chapter he's kicked out of Yancy

Demigods DO have natural combat abilities but Percy's also pretty small. Would Percy have won? maybe. I will concede that there's a chance. But it's a slim chance. It's not really fair to say those kids would have had "no chance". Especially when you consider that they outnumber him.

I wish there were more I already miss it

HSMTMTS doesn't require high budgets, VFX work, travel costs to go to different locations, stunt choreography, etc.

You don't reject the actor because it doesn't match with your canon, you modify the canon to match the actor. People complained about black Grover back then too, I think people in general are just incredibly sick of raceswapping, myself included. There’s only so many times where companies present raceswaps as superior, inclusive, etc etc, while at the same time, doing anti marketing and attacking fans. The Percy Jackson books especially actively place an important role on appearance, as the demigods and such were dreamed up by their godly parents, so thus, they will always look a certain way. As for centaurs and the gods, they’re Greek. It don’t make a lick of sense, so yeah, I can understand why people do not like this.

@@VanDeSho Not being taken seriously is something that applies to young girls in general and not just blonde ones. In fact, historically speaking, being academically underestimated and deemed as unintelligent has statistically been more so an issue for black people than it has for blondes, so the casting is actually in favor of this character detail. More importantly though, Annabeth's "blonde struggles" were never addressed in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is what this show is adapting, but only mentioned once in Heroes of Olympus and never actually demonstrated. If I recall correctly, the camp recognizes the Athena cabin as being generally smart (as in nobody dismissed Annabeth’s ideas or strategies during capture the flag for example) despite all of them being blonde, so her hair color is not nearly as important to her character as people make it seem. Physical appearance is honestly insignificant when it comes to accurately portraying the characters. Of course not in all cases, for example Nico becoming paler throughout the books represents his deteriorating mental state and Luke’s scar gives us insight and backstory to his character and motivations. But eye and hair color? Trivial and irrelevant. As for all the olympians being black, I’m not sure if you’re just being silly here because we’ve seen the casting for some of the other gods and know that’s not the case. Not to mention that the books explicitly state that gods don’t have DNA so physical traits such as skin color are not hereditary. Saying that the books already have racial diversity is also just false. The characters you mentioned, Hazel and Frank, are Heroes of Olympus characters and do not make an appearance in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which again is what the show is adapting. There is no word or guarantee that Heroes of Olympus will also be getting an adaptation, and even if there was, waiting 5 years to introduce the first notable character of color is quite ridiculous. The only characters that were explicitly stated to not be white in PJO are Ethan and Beckendorf, both of which do not even survive the end of the series. We know diversity has become important to Rick as a writer and storyteller as evidenced by his work post PJO, therefore it should not be surprising that given the chance to tell that story again, he wouldn’t specify race in the casting calls. The inclusion of underrepresented minorities has become a staple of his brand which is very much in line with the spirit of the Percy Jackson series, as his inspiration and motivation to write it in the first place was to represent people who have dyslexia and ADHD like his son.

The story has always been about representation. It was made to represent Rick Riordan’s son who had ADHD and dyslexia, to give him a hero to look up to that was like him. If that representation was pulled off in a way that didn’t feel “forced”, (and since there don’t seem to be complaints about that, I assume most people consider it to be well done) I don’t know why people seem so convinced it’s going to be a problem now. Edit: Also, to my understanding, the approach to casting was more about finding actors that embodied the characters in a convincing/compelling way even if they didn’t look perfectly like the ones written on the page. It gave them a wider casting pool and a chance for more talented people to apply. And from what we’ve seen, imo the actors chosen do seem to be appropriately cast for the personality of the characters.
