Today, we're going to take a look at a very interesting dive watch, which is capable in the ocean, but more at home in the board room, the Omega Seamaster 300 Master Coaxial (Ref: 233.30.41.21.01.001).

The dial is true to the 50'ies dive watches - which every other manufacturer seems to mees up ... I think they did an absolutely stellar retro look for this one!

You give the most entertaining and balanced reviews I have ever seen, and I LOVE the way you review watches as the TOOLS that they should be rather than strictly status/luxury items. Too many of the watch junkies seem so timid about saying anything negative about watches, especially those from Omega and higher prestige brands. Love the fact that brand “mystique” just does not have power over you!!!!

I bought this watch titanium case and titanium bracelet, with a blue dial for everyday wear in all kinds of environments. The important features to me were case/band material, durable sapphire crystals, antimagnetic properties, NO date function, understated styling, and a 60-hour power reserve. Buying a wristwatch is very much a personal choice, like choosing an automobile.

The negatives you listed aren't exactly negatives. Its all about the details. The dial is textured and has the hour slots laser cut. Lumed filled in. Ceramic bezel with liquid metal numbers filled into the ceramic, which alone is a very complex and expensive process. Those tiny details alone are a huge selling point of this watch imo and sadly, they're often overlooked on this model. Definitely my next Omega. Put it on an Omega nato strap and boom, I'd have a Spectre inspired watch!

Not to mention the outstanding Master co-axial movement certified by METAS that in terms of stability, reliability and magnetic resistance is superior to the Rolex Sub's movement, and very close in terms of outright accuracy

Not sure if anyone has commented on this, but the white seconds hand is true to the CK2913s, which is why Omega likely did it. I appreciate your review- Ironically, many of your complaints were things I loved that led me to purchase the 233- like the dial. I love the subtle sandblast, and how it comes alive in sun and stays matte indoors. Not a criticism- subjectivity is a great thing. Enjoy your week, and thank you for the review!

Agreed, the white hand was in the milspec 300, so it was very intentional by Omega. Could otherwise easily be misinterpreted as an oversight. Side note, @ErichPryde I'm now just seeing how many different forums you and I can interact on re: the 300 😁

I've got this watch, and I like it for the reasons you don't lol. I love how low-key and non-blingly the dial is. I also like the no-date window. And you forgot to mention the anti-magnetic properties of this watch, which was a big plus for me. I'll give you the bad of the polished center links though. I'm not a fan, but I got this as an everyday beater watch, so I'm not too fussed if it gets a little scratched up. The lume is kinda weak, but I don't really care about lume at all. It could have none for all I care. Anyway, nice review. Glad you got a chance to check it out.

It's a re-issue, so adding surrounds and so on wouldn't keep it true to the original dial design. The same with the "fauxtina" that they use to make the luminous material look like tritium with patina. That being said, those polished center links and other surfaces are scuff magnets. Even as a desk diver, it will collect swirls on the bracelet like nobody's business -- the same is true for the Daytona and many others. Once again, another solid review.

Exactly what I was going to say. Almost all of the gripes about this watch are things that are due to design decisions from the original Seamaster 300. The originals didn't have date windows, and the aged versions of the original will often have the aged lum, but still manage to retain the white hands. For a reissue I think they did a great job of ticking off all the boxes.

Lume not good, holy brown stuff, what are you looking at, any more lume and you would be able to read a book by the light given off. I have slowly begun to realise that this is going to be my next watch, just seems a bit smarter than a Seamaster Diver, not as bulky as a Planet Ocean, it will work as a casual sports watch yet retains the ability to sit comfortably under a cuff as a smart dinner watch. although dress watch cuffs maybe an issue. The vintage look of the dial is great, I love the 3,6,9,12 on the dial, no date is great, all the things you dislike. The one bit I do agree with is the lack of an applied Omega logo against printed. Pricing, well price is subjective, what you feel is high others feel acceptable, we would all like prices to drop but reality is that whilst Omega is selling watch by the bucket load it is unlikely that they will reduce price. Nice review thank you.

Interesting review. One thing that does surprise me is when people complain about mechanical calibers only being accurate to within a few seconds per day. If it is really and truly important that a watch be accurate to within 0.0001 seconds per day (or whatever) then people should buy a good quartz watch - and accept reliance on batteries which will suddenly fail at some point, and which may not be available far into the future. Generally speaking, people buy mechanical watches because they are miniature pieces of mechanical engineering which have an intrinsic beauty, and because they can potentially last for centuries if serviced every 5-10 years by a watchmaker. As far as accuracy is concerned, I would say two things: Firstly, being accurate to 4 seconds per day is actually very good for a mechanical caliber! Sure, Rolex state +/- 2 seconds per day. But of the four Rolex watches I bought new, only one was actually performing to within these parameters! Two of the others were to within about 3 seconds per day, and one to about 4 seconds per day (still very good!) Even a Lange I bought (undoubtedly the best caliber I have seen) wasn't doing better than 2 second per day... Secondly, in mechanical chronometry it isn't the gain or loss which is important, but rather the _consistency_ of this gain or loss. In the days when marine chronometers were vital navigational tools, a ship's chronometer would have a rating - let's say - 2.5 seconds per day. This was booked in every day - they basically assumed that 2.5 seconds had been lost on the pervious 24 hours and worked from there. After allowing for this consistent loss, they might only be out by 1 or 2 seconds in absolute terms after a sea voyage of several weeks! People just need to adjust a modern mechanical watch to an accurate reference time once every couple of weeks, and they'll always have (in any practical terms) good accurate time.

@berserkkw
@berserkkw 6 жыл бұрын
Matt McLoughlin in what way? The Tudor has a silicone hairspring, making it antimagnetic, 70 hour power reserve and in house movement. The GS has a spring drive which is about +/-1 second a day, and it's in essence a somewhat hybrid movement.. what tech does the omega have above these two besides the highly antimagnetic capability and liquid metal bezel?
@DMBVR4
@DMBVR4 6 жыл бұрын
Ali Haidar Liquidmetal bezel will never scratch or tarnish. This watch isn't antimagnetic... it is essentially immune to magnetism. The 300 is resistant to 15x higher magnetism than the Tudor. The master co-axial movement requires almost no lubrication which keeps maintenance very low. The bi-colored lume is outrageous, way better than Nick says. "Its not great" (clearly amazing) "not nearly as good as the PO" (no comparison example). Add this to the 60 hours power reserve and it's objectively the better watch over the Tudor. Yes the Tudor has 10 more hours, but after 60 who cares unless you're going to a 10-day just for bragging rights lol. The Breitlings, technically speaking, have no room in this debate. However... I didn't noticed you mentioned the Spring Drive. Hard to argue any movement in the world being more advanced than that one.... but the bezel, lume, antimagnetism, and size:water resistance ratio can't compare.

This dial is what attracts me most to the watch. Also this might be the most beautiful and refined movement in this price point today. You have beautifully unique in house modern movement wrapped in a super cool and stunning vintage design. I think the absence of the date actually adds to its vintage appeal and looks better than if it had the date. I do agree no one should pay full retail for this though. Second hand or grey market new is like 40% off. That puts this at 4K and I cannot find a better watch for that price today. This watch is an absolute bargain price when purchased second hand at the moment. I think eventually the after market price will have a very noticeable increase in the next 5-10 years. Especially if Omega ceases or slows production of this model which I also see coming.

Why no mention of the Seamaster history? The painted dial, broad arrow hour hand, patina'd lume, bracelet design, no date window, and no applied indices are hallmarks of the original 1957 Seamaster. The white second hand is a hallmark of the 1960 upgrade, making this an interesting combination of the first two Seamaster models. To me the dial and hands are precisely what makes this a Seamaster. The modern Seamaster 300 Professional and the 600 Planet ocean (I have both) don't hold a candle to this bad boy in wrist appeal.

Decent in depth review but my opinion differs from yours. I prefer no date dials, I like the pop of the white second hand and enjoy the high polish. The accuracy is on a par with a Rolex sub and the anti-magnetic qualities are superior. I enjoy the display back and the vintage feel of the dial. The water resistance and lume are perfectly adequate but the best part is actually the pre-owned prices. So many agree with you that you can snap up them up for a bargain price.

Coming back and watch again, I would say that this watch has a plastic dial because it focuses more on the movement. Also, I don't think they have the tech and fancy gimmicks like we do back in 1957. Maybe they try to keep it as original taste as possible?
@adampittman6603
@adampittman6603 5 жыл бұрын
The dial is made out of the same alloy as the Planet Ocean, not plastic. This is a sized-up mostly faithful issue of their 1957 Seamaster. A big part of the appeal is the understated, classic, matte finished (as all serious dive watches used to have) tool-watch dial. I suppose your review is valuable as the opinion of an average non-watch person that doesn't really know what he's looking at. You didn't even address the big actual flaw, the over-long lugs that throw the look off balance. They were fine on the original at 39mm, but scaled up, they don't really work.

Interesting review but I do not completely agree on a lot of things. I belive that Nick does not understand what this product is. It is a diver but a vintage diver. So if people want all the bells and wizzles of a great diver they should buy the seamaster 300 professional or buy a Tudor Pelagos.. I agree that a lot of styling on this seamster 300 could be better. Polished links on the bracelet is not the best option. An applied Omega logo on the dial would also feel more luxurious. A hour hand should have better lume and the seconds hand has the wrong colour. It should be the same colour as the other hands with maybe a lume pip on it. Omega wanted to stay close to the old vintage model of this watch so they did not. The lume is ok but if people want better lume they should buy another Omega diver. The prices of Omega is a bit of a problem. The prices drop too fast. Rolex prices are also too high and not reasonable at the moment, but Rolex has the name at the momen and people want a Rolex. The movement on any new omega is great and 60 hours of powerreserve is very good. Overall a beautiful watch that could use some improvement to make it a killer watch. Just my two cents.

I bought this watch a week ago. Love it! The devil is in the details and the details on this piece is so overlooked. The liquidmetal process done on the ceramic bezel for the numerals, the laser cut hour indices for the lume to be filled in.. All very complex techniques done on the watch yet still retaining that vintage look of the original 57 Seamaster with the non applied logos and white seconds hand. The faux patina isn't all that bad either. I've looked at mine up close and under various lights, the patina isn't very obvious so I don't get what the fuss is about with the patina on this. It isn't so bad. It's cream or off white but the patina is not as obvious as say the upcoming Omega No Time To Die watch. I've put mine on the Omega nato strap and it looks so good. Very Spectre inspired with the nato strap that's for sure. Been wearing it everyday since getting it last week. There is also a short video of it in my channel.

It is too thick, too shiny, there is something plain about the dial, 21mm lug width and it has faux patina. And yet... I freaking love this watch. I think it is spectacular in design and execution. I had to choose between a new version of this and the 2015 no date ceramic sub... and against my own expectations I came home with this watch. If the polished midlinks ever end up in a state where they are too scratched up, I will drop off the bracelet to be brushed for 30-50 euros and it will be solved.

I've got one of these. Only worn a few times, two years old. Does anyone know the best place to sell it in the UK?

I don't really think your price comparison is fair... oris is great but they also don't make their own movements (mostly) nor do they decorate their movements, 4 seconds is acceptable, the date function is actually something a lot of watch enthusiasts don't want because it breaks up the symmetry. The design is pretty unique, it feels like everyone who wears a dive watch defaults to the omega diver 300 or a tudor etc... this is a piece where your coworker is not gonna show up tomorrow to work wearing a matching watch to yours. Ceramic is more expensive to produce, with their liquid metal, no one else does that. It's a solid piece and compared to the market it's the right price.

Suprised you never made an invicta automatic pro diver review. Its got its faults, especially compared to "nice" watches, but it'd be nice to see you cover watches in the average person's price range, lol.

A 1st generation Planet Ocean gives you some of the vintage and less of the douchiness for half the cash.

qtips and simichrome polish will restore a polished surface in minutes and no one but you will know. Brushed finishes are nearly impossible to restore perfectly.

Is it really a plastic dial? Seems incorrect to me.

Need the date ? I got a phone. Tells the time too,but I can glance at the watch, I gotta look at the phone. Do you night dive ? I do,and don't look at the watch while I'm diving. I use it to work the tables after the dive. As a piece of dive equipment, it's kinda redundant anyway. Use a computer, but if the computer fails,it's a nice back up. I live on a sailboat, I'm 60,and grey market, I'm paying $4300. Good information, but I'm not buying as an investment. That'll be my boy's problem. I've got a Tag Aquaracer quartz. Pretty,but sucks. The 300 professional looks too much like my Tag,and I've got a Seiko turtle 6309-7049 I've owned since 1984. I'm good.

The Planet Ocean has a number 1 in the date window so it's nine days slow. Absolute rubbish. Also, the Omega Seamaster 300 is dangerous and I'm surprised it didn't turn into a spike and kill you. Look on the back. It says Liquid Metal Technology. That, as we all know, is Hememetic Poly-Alloy. Exactly what the second Terminator is made of. I need help don't I...?

He kept saying plastic dial. Its a ceramic dial. Plus its a vintage design. It should not have itched markers.

Every time I hear you mention the price of one of the nicer watches you review I think to myself, “I could get a nice used car for that!”

Here are some quotes from another video: "While attending a meeting, nobody cares how you got here but they will look at your watch for the next several hours" "Car-people care about the car, but not who is driving it" These watches are more of a statement piece rather than tools. Once you have a car that works for you, a watch can be a stronger status symbol than a vehicle. And it has the potential to last multiple times longer than a car. Of course, if you care only about the functional and rational aspect of things, a $10 quartz Casio and a $500 used car are the best value for money.

It's a cash grab is what it is. Nothing new for Omega. The planet ocean, on the other hand, looks like they actually put some work into. If it was thinner, I'd go for a planet ocean as well. Great review and insights!

21mm lug width is an absolute deal beaker, it's either an expendable watch for the wealthy or it was made just for screen shots.
