Only you is definitely beautiful. My mum and dad loved the platters and when dad was in the hospice, dying from prostate cancer this song played. Mum cried (I cried), dad was oblivious to how close to death he was, so wondered what all the fuss was about. That's the memory behind only yoy now. But it's a beautiful song! ❤️

This was done in '58. I was 2 years old, so I heard it on the radio anywhere I went... because there was one radio station that played Rhythm and Blues, Country, Rock and Roll, One Hit Wonders, anything new that people liked. Elvis when he first started out, Aretha Franklin, Hank Williams, Everly Brothers, Coasters, Platters, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, you name it... and EVERYBODY listened to that station.

Once upon a time, being a vocalist was a high plateau for someone to reach, and the public sat and listened, and appreciated the incredible gift they were hearing, the endless rehearsals, the tweaking of a song, the WORK that goes into doing this. And we bought their records. This...this was that time. The Platters were those musicians, and the truth is there were more than a few like them. I am gonna assume that the reason we don't hear music like this anymore is because too few people know it even exists. You are helping that, my friend.

@@kathleenmayhorne3183 Covered by two Brit comedy actors, Windsor Davies & Don Estelle, in the guise of their TV characters from the bbc sitcom 'It ain't half hot Mum', about an army 'concert-party', in the WWII jungle campaign against the Japanese. It sounds odd for a sitcom, but at the time (mid 70's) it went down really well with UK audiences, & has become something of a classic piece of UK TV!

That’s the phenomenal Tony Williams singing! He was their lead singer for most of the 50s. One of my all-time favorite voices! I fell so in love with this band the first time I heard them as a kid! I couldn’t stop listening and got addicted to 50s music in general. Besides “Only You,” which you already reacted to, their other biggest hits are “My Prayer” and “The Great Pretender.” But you can’t go wrong with any Platters song from between 1953-1960, when Tony Williams was singing lead. To me this is what the word “dreamy” sounds like!!
