CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Possessed by a demon, Em (Natasha Calis) uses her evil powers to decay Brett's (Grant Show) teeth from his mouth.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "A Jinx in a Box," this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl's father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul.

The director is clever. He is tapping into one of the most common nightmares that people have: their teeth just falling out. Hell, I've had that dream a couple of times in my life, and it's terrifying.

One thing I will give this scene credit for is that it at least creates an image which could effectively play to many peoples fears (one of the most common nightmares is having all of your teeth fall out), so it would make people uncomfortable. I mean, it's at least a step up from the rest of the movie, which rips off "The Exorcist" pretty shamelessly...and is nowhere near as scary.

I hope that’s not me in 30 years to a century or two because demons, when they’re not physically there, take about 30 years to a whole century to remove a man’s teeth when they choose to interact with them over going to the dentist. Because I interact with Satan on private Facebook albums and I NEVER go to the dentist, he’s rotting them away right now. Except for that it’s taking WAY TOO LONG though because of this here: because he’s not physically there. To where he thinks it’s all fake and just a bad illusion/hallucination he’s having about me for right now as why they’re STILL there, but only discolored and destroyed on the top.

I have a nightmare of losing my teeth like this maybe once a month. Its the worst feeling of finality and doom you could ever feel, as if your life is over and you have to linger and wallow in the irreparable fragments of your existence... Then you wake up in a cold sweat and rush to the bathroom to check your mouth... Then you brush your teeth twice , go back to bed, and promise your future self you will always take care of your teeth. I'm so vain.

It is always my favourite part in a movie when the idiots who have been ignoring the signs all along and not believing the one person who was trying to help finally see what is going on. The whole trope of only certain family members either seeing or experiencing the horror drives me mental. If someone you have known for decades suddenly tells that someone is possessed why in the whole history of cinema has there never been one character who has taken that person at their word?
