The South African Ratel Armoured Fighting Vehicle and the Russian T-72 Tank are put through their paces on Sandstone Estates. These vehicles were adversaries in South Africa's war with Angola from the 1990's.

I've seen this exact T-72 in person. It is currently on display at the South African Armour Museum inside a special hangar.

I was at the show on the day this was filmed, Sandstone Estates, situated between Ficksburg & Fouriesburg in the eastern free state. Pretty inpressive things when seen up close, & fun when you score a ride on it! The ratel's painted in a pretty zany sand yellow though...

The two T72s at School of Armour were procured in the early nineties, not early seventies.
@robert-trading-as-Bob69 Жыл бұрын
I was at School of Armour in about March of 1989 when a MAN truck arrived with a tank covered by a tarpaulin. We were told it was top secret Russian acquired tank. Two corporals, who were best friends, snuck our 2 troops into the Tank Vehicle Park to have a look at the tank. They had the keys for the hanger. I seem to recall that it was a T-72, and if so, it might have been an upgraded version of the T-72 purchased from Poland in the early 70's. Or it was a T-80. Does anyone know what it was we peered at in the dark of that hanger?

Favourite quote "It's got a 125mm smooth bore gun, which is a European choice."
@drossouw2218 Жыл бұрын
The differences between the T54 and T55 are a bit more than just one machine gun. For example, the T55 is equipped with a somewhat different turret, NBC protection and a gun fume extractor.

The Ratel apcv is a good fighting vehicle for its time but the Rooikat f.v. are my favourite choice. If only it can be upgraded with a 120 mm calibre smooth bore gun. and some anti tank missile launchers plus all state of the art laser target finders and night seeing tech.

Bonjour a tous du Canada I think the T- 72 need a orange triangle back to the Tank north america all farm equipement need this orange triangle
@Witput3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. The Sandstone Heritage Trust does not actually have a T-72 but the Military have brought one to their events from time-to-time. We are aware that in the USA these triangles are mandatory but they are not necessarily compulsory in South Africa. Sandstone also does not take any of their Military vehicles on the road other than by big low loaders.
@iHelpSolveIt Жыл бұрын
@@Witput if memory serves you're correct, no military vehicles that are unregistered can drive on the road. They have to comply with civilian laws before they can but once registered and safety compliant they can but do not require any specific markings as they're not available for civilian registered use.

NATO supplied Bradley and German Leopard tanks have all been easily destroyed. Modern drone warfare has made tanks obsolete. Plenty of videos of Ukraine tanks being eliminated by a drone dropping a shell above the turret. Dont fall for controlled CNN and BBC lies.

I never did understand all the love for the T72. The US Army completely obliterated them with DU rounds from IFVs during the Gulf War and that was 30 years ago. They seem more like logistics hogs in this day of drones, smart weapons and extremely fast moving wheeled combat vehicles. The SADF shot up Soviet tanks during the Border War with 90 mm armed Elands and I don’t see heavy tracked vehicles being a good long term investment. Even the US Marines are doing away with their M1 Abrams as they transition to more distributed warfare.
@a.t60663 жыл бұрын
Look at Syrians using m1s or Iraq during the gulf war or north Korean t-34s or coalition is3s against the israelis. A soviet tank is not anything the same as a soviet operated tank. Each of those vehicle definitely demonstrated their worth in conflicts when used by their home nations. The effectiveness of a vehicle boils down to the quality of the generals at the table and operators of the machine
@a.t60663 жыл бұрын
Also us marines are getting rid of their tanks not because they aren't useful, but because of cuts. They would keep them if they could
@Vidic2363 жыл бұрын
T-72 is a world class tank which was superior to any Western counterpart for a decade and later versions being on par with newer western counterparts. T-72 was “obliterated “ because those were export T-72 tanks given to poorly trained crews. Same thing happened to export Abrams and Leopard2 tanks, they did awfully So why do you refuse to acknowledge that? Is it only to suit your narrative? Secondly, IFV rounds did not penetrate T-72 on front they simply lack the penetration It was their missiles
@mazambane2862 жыл бұрын
@@Vidic236 So in your opinion the Russians, Cubans and other Eastern Block tank crews were poorly trained? Because it was them who mostly crewed the tanks in Angola after fapla had failed.
