From the 80’s to 2000’s, Abercrombie was the prom king of American fashion - the cool and preppy brand of choice for teens and young adults. You couldn’t miss when someone was wearing Abercrombie. While wearing Abercrombie was a statement, going into Abercrombie was an adventure. To impressionable adolescents, Abercrombie stores were uniquely alluring with dim lighting, musky cologne, blaring music, and floor-to-ceiling wallpapers of sculpted men.
Yet as the shopping mall died, e-commerce grew, social media helped widen perspective and styles, competition intensified with fast fashion like Uniqlo, ZARA, H&M, Forever 21 and athleisure like Lululemon, Athleta, Nike entering the scene. Controversial statements from the CEO only reinforced the perception of Abercrombie as an outdated, exclusionary, over-sexualized brand built on teenage-angst. In less than a decade, Abercrombie went out-of-style.
The PR crisis, widespread disapproval, and declining consumer popularity had many predicting the death of Abercrombie. Yet instead of succumbing to what would be a fatal strike for any company, Abercrombie has reinvented itself to record success - reaching levels of income and profits that the company has not experienced since 2012. In this episode, we’ll break down the business mistakes that led to the company's initial downfall and cover the winning strategy that has made Abercrombie cool once again.

When I was a teenager, going into hollister/abercrombie was a trial of passage. Only the "skinny" and "pretty" girls had to guts to buy clothe from there, and I remember hearing a white mom brag about how her daughter was a staff at a hollister store. Now brandy melville is the new hollister! Great video once again.

The Abercrombie of the past may have held some controversial business practices and marketing strategies but let's talk about the hard product, strictly the merchandise itself. The Devil is in the details - being experienced with the old school product, almost everything was made of premium heavyweight cottons, broad stitched seams and embroidery, detailed piping and heavy duty zippers, buttons, and riveting. All which drive up the manufacturing cost. Yes, many looks were repetitive in nature but high quality in look and feel. The Abercrombie of today mostly uses cheap poly-blend materials, has little detail, and feels very generic - more like something American Apparel would offer. Social inclusivity is great but why can't we have both at the same time? The one thing that hasn't changed is still my favorite - the Fierce Cologne - Classic!
@BlendedBarbieDoll

This! I worked for Abercrombie in college and the denim, leather belts, wool sweaters and down coats were fantastic quality. There were never sales only clearance and the merchandising was impeccable. We had to learn a new way to fold jeans and sweaters every other week.

Agreed. I always liked how good the fabric was and the zippers were really good. I loved buying their clothes during my time at university because the jackets and other items, lasted. At 30 now, I still shop there and I can find some good quality stuff especially when I was working in an office. Now I’m full time oil field and I’m still wearing a jacket(when I don’t have to wear FRs) I bought during my university days lol it’s really lasted through a lot of washes.

If you don't mind me asking; but how does Fierce cologne smell? I honestly didn't know or understand how much of a creep the former CEO Mike Jeffries was until I saw a documentary on Netflix titled "White Hot: the Rise and Fall of Abercrombie and Fitch."

@@MichaelLovely-mr6oh - As someone who collects and reviews luxury fragrances on my own channel, I have to say Fierce is very unique in it's category. It was center stage at a time when A&F were positioning themselves as a luxury brand. I cannot put my finger on why, but when I wear it I get more compliments then if I were to wear a Dior or Tom Ford. I don't know their formula but it is certainly one of a kind!

I really enjoy your take on things but you are wrong about A&F being “low quality clothing” at the beginning of the video. To this day, my old A&F clothes are still some of the highest quality produced everyday ware that I have seen. My old polos stashed away in storage still have thick, soft fabric, velvet around the neckline, and really nice buttons. Their items lasted longer than lululemon does today.

When the wind blows away from A&F, Zara, and H&M etc towards new hip and trendy retailers, what is left? The reputation for quality and exclusivity is gone and their business model is already oversaturated.

My 40 year old spouse remembered A&F as a mall brand that was worn by the obnoxious, preppy kids in his small high school. This was in the late 90s, when wearing A&F, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, or other clothing brands with the logos blazingly sewn on them were in vogue…but also a sign that you, as a person, were just a walking billboard for clothing companies and, therefore, a sellout. My spouse instead opted for tie-dye shirts and baggy cargo shorts, complete with a bucket hat to complete the look. I (a couple years younger than my spouse) was exposed to A&F at a few times when going to Mall of America on occasional shopping trips and then A&F and Hollister in the nearest mall when going to college. I found the stores intimidating and loud, not to mention that I thrifted most of my clothes since I didn’t make much working part time. I’m a lot more intrigued to shop there today since I’ve only dabbled in fast fashion a little bit in my 20s, but have “grown up” enough to have experienced (and mourned) how quickly such clothing falls apart so easy and I just don’t have patience to deal with such headaches anymore. I’m against fast fashion, consumer waste, and I’m happy to see more companies take a more craftsman approach to making clothing that can last a long time and be more investment pieces rather than pieces of inevitable garbage.

Oh my this takes me back. In my exchange year in Minnesota, a decade ago at that, everyone was wearing: Abercrombie, Hollister, American Eagle, or VS Pink. I did give in to buy some, but it was quite expensive for my budget. Worst part was the sizing, while I'm not considered fat, I definitely don't look best in skin fitting style and mini sizes the brand focused on. I also hated the heavy scent.😅 All those things made me preferred Forever21 much more (fast fashion, I know)! Premium brands back then just treat not ideal women with such exclusion it's the opposite of a fun shopping experience. When you're constantly being reminded that you need to look better, it's kinda suffocating (like that poor taste scent). Visiting Abercrombie store last year in London, I really like the cottage core & casual feeling they went for. Still quite pricey, but it was much more welcoming and I feel invited into a store rather than lure into a weird cult of sweaty frat boys.

Dear MMBA, While this was a wonderful exploration into the nature of product and marketing ( and once again underscores the gamble that any CEO represents for any company ), I found this story fascinating. I lived in San Francisco in the 70's, I always enjoyed going into the Abercrombie & Fitch store in downtown because it was the only place in the world you could outfit yourself for a tiger hunt in India should one wish, they had H & H Magnums hanging in class cases, English and Scottish wool outdoor hunting wear, and bespoke boots from London, handmade fly Rods from Japan, and Swiss climbing gear. It was as if one was in another world. To see how this company had become the darling trended fashion giant of teenagers made me smile.

Great breakdown! I didn't grow up with Abercrombie near me, and I wouldn't have fit into the clothes back then anyway. I'm finishing grad school now, and a couple of classmates kept taking about Abercrombie, which made me curious. I'm actually SHOCKED that they carry pants in short rises, and actually look like something I could wear to work. When one of my classmates shows up in Abercrombie dress pants, sneakers, and a basic long-sleeved tee (or bodysuit, who knows), I'm impressed that it's such a simple, but elevated look. I may not have the budget at the moment, but dang, Abercrombie, way to go for refreshing your image!

I did not expect the topic of the video to be on A&F. Like the other day I went to a baseball game and saw a girl on A&Fs website and I was like why? Wasn't the brand dead in the mid 2000s. And not even 2 days later it seems like I'm getting my answer lol.

I much prefer the new Abercrombie. It's easier to wear and the quality is much nicer. They have the best bodysuits and other basics. I also love their curve love jeans which are great for my pear shape. It looks and feels higher end now. Those big logos were so tacky and were never going to stay in style.

I 100% agree as a guy. I’m 21 and although I wasn’t a teen at the time when the brand was under scrutiny for its horrible practices and leadership, seeing what the brand has overcome and evolved to over the past few years has been incredible. In middle school I would shop there and I also found the big logos that were plastered on every item to be very tacky, so I’m glad they got rid of that stuff. I realized that there’s only their classic logo left on a few polos or button down shirts, but that’s it. Most of their clothing doesn’t have big tacky logos anymore. In today’s times I doubt the the old version of brand would’ve lasted. Especially as a senior in college, over the last 2 years in particular I’ve noticed how amazing of quality their clothing has become and how I frequently check the website for new arrivals because of their great clothing. During spring break I recently got a linen, viscose blend shirt that feels incredible. I’ve seen people complain that the brand has become boring with its clothing, but imo it’s not at all and it still stands out from other brands with shitty clothing like H&M, Aéropostale, better than American Eagle tbh, and many other clothing stores. So yes their clothing may be more basic now, but it’s so much better and easier to wear.

@@mikecapalungan Yes, I agree. They have lots of linen and wool blend items that feel way better than all the 100% polyester crap most brands have.

Can’t speak for the women’s department but from a guys experience the jeans and flannel shirts were Polo RL quality also the jackets I’d give anything to get my hands on a Adirondack jacket today, the rebrand might as well been named FashioNova & fitch.

The old A&F under Mike Jeffries was genius. The clothes were great, the marketing was great, the models were hot, the stores were great. A&F circa 2001 was a phenomenon in fashion that will probably never happen again. The A&F store now is absolutely horrible. The clothes are horrible. It literally looks like the salvation army. That brand has been totally destroyed.

I don't like the current A&F, i get that the culture needed to change but their clothes stopped looking unique. They look like any other H&M, Pull and Bear style fast fashion store. I miss the preppy, college look.

The Hollister rebrand it’s probably the worst everything from the jeans to hoodies looks like something fashion nova would sell, it’s all fast fashion throwaway clothes and it’s crazy that Gen Z doesn’t see that.

Abercrombie advertisement was shirtless dudes with abs, surrounded by skinny women in their underwear. They sell clothes, but their advertisements are mostly clotheless. As if you would get abs by wearing their clothes. Kinda brilliant, ngl.

I think you could have explored the "Fashion was underdeveloped" statement you made around the 1:18 mark a little more. Abercrombie and malls weren't exactly representative of trends in fashion. Perhaps fashion was underdeveloped in the sense that high fashion was inaccessible to ordinary people.

I'm just annoyed at how much less fitted both Abercrombie and Hollisters clothes are now. The crotch on their jeans are weird and baggy rather than being form fitting and flattering. The quality is also not as good - they use much cheaper, thinner, less sturdy of material.

Abercrombie and Hollister were so weird to me growing up. I had no idea why people would want to have a shirt with the retailers name on it. Like usually if you get a graphic tee, it has a band name or maybe a reference to a movie/TV show. Instead, all these wannabe cool kids wore shirts that just said "Hollister" on it lol it's just an advertisement
