As an ex awkward person myself, i can confidently claim that exposure is the best way. Just a few months ago i moved to another city ,where i knew absolutely no one, for high school. Not first grade but third so everyone had their groups. I remember how anxious i was the first few weeks, but still, i did everything i can to talk to people about things - little, meaningless things cuz appearently thats how small talk works- felt like hell but then i began to realize its not as hard as i thought, people are not really that judgy, they share experiences with me and they genuinely don’t care about the things that make me insecure. Now im almost a social butterfly in just a few months! So try to get out of you comfort zone as soon as you can, it will not be easy at all but will worth it!

What has really worked for me over the years has been to just be honest and say to the other person: "I'm really nervous", or "I'm not sure what to do with my hands right now" for example, and always with a laughing or similing tone. Everyone can relate to being awkward, and it can help you a lot to break the ice. Being honest about your vulnerabilities and immediate feelings in turn makes others more comfortable being with you, in my experience.

Ok so for all those awkward ppl out there (and this is coming from someone that was/occasionally is still awkward), I found that I was super anxious and worried sm abt those awkward silences more than actually knowing how to continue a conversation. I got my first job in 2021, started off by not talking to anyone, and then slowly got more comfortable with my coworkers and just took a risk and started talking. Ended up becoming friends with everyone, became really social and talkative, learned how to continue conversations and keep eye contact, etc, etc. I think the best advice I can give to those who have paralyzing social anxiety is to just breathe and embrace it. Live in the moment and enjoy the conversation, and force yourself out of your comfort zone (as hard as it is). I feel sm better now knowing I can at least fake confidence even if I’m feeling super awkward.

This is excellent advice. Me from 15 years ago wholeheartedly agrees. It definitely works. Awkwardness is 100% a lack of practice unless you're ungodly levels of autistic. Practice more and you'll become less awkward. Just like any other skill. Nobody to practice with? No problem! While not quite as effective, this still works: Get your phone out, stand up, and record yourself yapping for 5 minutes straight. Can't talk for 5 minutes without interruption? Sure you can. Talk about anything. Then watch yourself back and cringe. Try again but try to correct any "cringe" behavior. Boring af? Try to make it less boring next time. Rinse and repeat a solid 100 times and you'll see pretty significant improvement. Write things down and track it.

Thanks for sharing, almost the same thing happened to me too! When I started at my job I was awkward and suffered from social anxiety I guess, and I chose not to talk to anyone. I just did my job and basically talked to no one and once the shift was over went home. This lasted for like three monts until I was like the heck I'm doing, I think it would make this job more bearable if I actually interacted with people. So just started talking to coworkers and it wasn't even that awkward, the conversations became longer and I made friends.

It’s best not to overthink how to not look awkward. The best and only relevant advice is to first be confident which is its own complex issue and secondly understand social cues. When it comes to social cues it’s virtually impossible to achieve social fluency by consciously implementing “tactics”, this will lead only to even more awkwardness alongside a debilitating serving of social anxiety, believe me I’ve been there. Truly socially adept people are never stuck in their own head about how others around them are perceiving them, they are present and in tune with those they are conversing with rather than trying to control how they are seen. Now if your not naturally receptive of the necessary cues your either one of two things, severely autistic or lacking in consistent exposure to social environments, the latter is more probable. Best thing you can do is be around more people daily to train your subconscious mind to do the work for you so your conscious mind has room to spare for engaging the complexities presented in the mutual topic at hand. Social interaction is far too complicated to try and control, you must develop the power of your social intuition through the reluctant means of exposure if you ever want to attain charisma.
@Justjoshin99
@Justjoshin99 4 ай бұрын
This is very insightful, and I appreciate your knowledge on this topic. I myself am very awkward, it used to be a lot worse but as time passed and I had more exposure, it has gotten better. I have gotten myself to a point where I’m not necessarily content with myself but I know enough about social interactions to at least look ok most of the time, so basically I’ve gotten good at faking it. In order to actually feel less awkward all together, I haven’t really gotten that part down yet. I know it involves more exposure in regards to social environments but I can’t help constantly overthinking and over analyzing pretty much any scenario I find myself in. I constantly feel like I have to explain myself to people or make them understand me for me to be comfortable around them. I always feel like I have to tell everyone everything about myself upon the second I meet them so they’ll accept me and I won’t feel pressured by them to live up to their preexisting expectations. So I understand that I need more exposure and I have to train myself in those areas but how exactly do you propose I should confront the overthinking/over analyzing aspect of all this?
@OGpostaldude

Autism doesn't have "severity" levels. It has a spectrum of needs "levels". I (autistic person) can socialize very well, but I can't "read people" unless they tell me what they're thinking/feeling because I don't think it's logical to assume these things. Why? Body language isn't universal. Not even remotely. I won't guess how anyone is thinking or feeling because it isn't my job. It isn't anyone's. It's everyone's job to communicate in a clear and healthy way. Guessing people's feelings and basing my reactions on my guesses is a recipe for disaster. Direct communication and giving clarity makes life easier for everyone in the end. I suggest that people with trauma related to socializing (most autistic people) surround themselves with people who don't shame them for their "oddness". Essentially, being around people you DON'T need to socially mask with will make a huge difference. No amount of exposing yourself to inconsiderate people will make you more tolerant of mistreatment or social alienation. Essentially, I think everyone needs to find their "tribe" and not focus on seeking the approval of others that would've never accepted them for who they really are anyway. A lot of people are scared to socialize because of trauma through social ostracization/bullying.

I'm autistic and I think I'm fairly good at social stuff. some stuff that's helped me: 1) linking what the other person is taking about to my current hyperfixation or special interest 2) instead of making eye contact, I look at their forehead or nose 3) practising common scenarios in a mirror (job interview, small talk on the bus etc) 4) giving myself off time after a long day of masking/talking to spend time with myself in silence 5) finding understanding friends that I can unmask around (especially helps if they're also autistic!!) I'm very high-masking so I've been a social chameleon my whole life but when I get home I completely crash and go mute. It's okay to put on a pretend face for strangers and coworkers if you give yourself time to recover at home and with friends :) Hope this helps!

When I feel awkward, I like to loudly acknowledge it by saying straight up "Wow. This is really awkward." and do a stage bow. Usually the other person or people are very relieved and/or curious, laugh, and we go about the situation, significantly less awkward :)

Also another way to be less scared of social interaction is to simply NOT care. Like just NOT give a fuck about what the outcome is going to be. So I recommend practicing on people that you don't really care about (in terms of how they perceive you or what their impression of you is). But again, I just say this because my entire social skills depend on the fact that I don't give (much of) a fuck about my image. The more you care, the more you're likely to fumble. BUT NOTE THIS--Caring about your image is DIFFERENT from wanting to make a good impression. You can always dress well, smell good, and smile and stuff. Those are things you CAN control. Most of what you say and DO socially though really can't be predicted after a certain extent and my personal method is to just YOLO it.

4:30 FINALLY!! Please. If you socially awkward or anxious just focus on having more interactions and failing. And then if you don't want to fail that much, just focus on the other person and be genuinely interested in them and their life. If you do that, let me tell you honey, you'll *never* run out of shit to talk bout. Like really. (Yk cause like just like you think bout yourself and your life, others also do )

Having aspergers and social anxiety, awkwardness is a big part of my life. Im glad i can recognize awkwardness and try to avoid it (unlike others on the spectrum) but having to be constantly self conscious about everything takes a toll makes me feel like im not sincere. My aspergers Has made me Overthink basic social stuff and having to remeber every painful detail sucks but it has helped me sometimes. Having high intellect is a curse and a blessing because though im able to understand the social aspect of life to a decent level and aply it i never truly comprehend the why which can make me seem emotionally distant and ignorant of others perspectives. I hate being so shy and nervous.

my mind just shatters whenever I'm in a social situation. the thingy that translates sounds into words into thoughts stops working. i become unable to think. i just break. but social anxiety aside. i literally just have nothing to say really. i am just objectively boring and uninteresting, i don't have anything that makes me special, i lack identity. there's no reason for anyone to even bother trying to communicate with me. and, i have lived under a rock my entire life, i don't know anything, i don't have any knowledge or memories, so there is no default topic anyone could fall back to when trying to talk to me or vice versa and when there's more people talking i never understand the topic they're taking about and never have anything valuable to add. i have just, given up years ago. there is just nothing i can do. i have tried for years forcing myself into social situations trying to fit in, but like, nope it does not work i am just doomed to fail

Interesting point about the scale used to determine normality, awkwardness, and autism. It seems you could interchange the term "weird" with "awkward" as well, and it seems those closer to having a form of ASD are "weirder" than the average. Perhaps through trial and error with training, somebody could overcome these social obstacles.

@@ennik7162 interact with others and reflect on the experiences. read the room and especially watch the words you say. some autistic people have a tendency to say unnecessary things or they may drag on certain topics. BUT I think being confident or at least acting confident (comfortable in your own skin) can make the conversation just a bit more smoother. remember though that you don't want to be focused on yourself all the time and more on the person you're interacting with. good luck yall 👍

Look, I'm autistic, I'm NEVER going to fucking hold my eye contact. It makes me feel like I'm looking into hell Another thing about autism causing social "inconsistency", I understand. I feel like its correlated to accent changing, sometimes my accent changes from Midwestern to Southern depending on who I'm talking to, but it comes as naturally to me as changing my tone in a sentence I'm writing to capture a different audience, like writing in different genres. I always look for the right input to continue a conversation I thought about in my head beforehand rather than reading the room, and it leaves the effect that I'm completely oblivious (I am) of my surroundings. --Another (another) thing about autism is that its a fucking clusterfuck of different symptoms and some people who have Asperger's can seem like the most socially awkward people imaginable and they're somehow UNFAZED BY IT
