The sharp end of the stick: Painting a phalangite from the Hellenistic era

In this week's video, I tackle one of the plastic phalangites from Victrix's (relatively) new boxed set. I go for a generic paint job that should work for a lot of different Hellenistic armies and I talk some about a few of the added challenges when you are trying to blend colour on plastic surfaces!

I really like how you paint bronze. I tried it out on some Hoplites and looks great. Big fan Vallejo Air Gold now. Keep up the good work.

Lovely work as always :) Regarding the smoothness/lack of "tooth" - maybe gesso or spray primer would be better (I seem to remember that you use Vallejo surface primer)?

Yea, I've thought about that. It seems like Mr. Superclear matte varnish gets used a fair amount for that purpose in the doll repainting community so it might be useful, but honestly I don't paint plastics enough that I've felt the need to look in to that issue. This is actually the first time I've actually even realized it could be an issue.

I use mostly the Vallejo range of paints, with a few washes and colour by Citadel (Games Workshop) thrown in. You can see all the bottles at the very start of the video after the introduction.

alex kinchin last time i painted a unit, I was not nearly as good a painter and I didn't particularly try to paint them to a super high standard either.

Why use the red glaze for the skin over say a flesh wash ? Do you just prefer the red color over the say brownish red reikland flesh shade ?

I use both. But working in the red later on makes for a way more realistic looking skin tone in my opinion, with added depth and complexity. Everything else about how I paint skin hasn't changed; but just adding that in makes a big difference. Also, of course the drawback of a wash is it will only go into the crevices, when I actually want the red on the high points many times, such as the tip of the nose and cheeks.

well yes thinkng of beefing up my enpier army and uesing history guys to do so and that copany one i get from fore price say 10 you get 40 of em and me kit bash time like the mini and as post will see em

He looks really nice, but he looks more like a winter-pale german barbarian than a bronzed greek warrior. Maybe add a bit more brownish orange to the skin of the next guys in his unit? No offence intended, btw.

No problem! I just used my standard skin tone mix here and didn't really make an attempt to adjust it for a more "Mediterranean" skin tone. There are definitely tutorials in my skin painting play list which DO talk about how to achieve that darker look if you want though. I'll just say this guy is from a land with paler skin tones. I'm quite sure there was some variation there, even if it isn't the ideal. ;-)

"What you calld 8 pointed star" is not a star but in fact it is a sun and even today the sun is on the red flag of the Republic of Macedonia. (Red represents the bllod and the sun represents victory,brightness and new bigining)
