A lot of times dissolves are used as a passage of time/ flashbacks or location change which certainly applies to most of these but I can’t shake the feeling it was used as a style choice to add a dreamier feel to the whole thing

that makes sense, and then more and more as it goes on you have the sudden changes notifying of the month, day, and time changes... those intensify

I think Juli Kearns goes into this a lot in her Idyllopus Press website, exploring how they create connections in the audience's mind between two settings, or something.

The dissolves are part of the story itself. Fading from family to forest or from son to father or from father to evil room… I think they can be discussed quite literally from x to y and what the implications are for the plot

A lot of these dissolves were cut from the shorter "International" version of the film. My favourite dissolve is the one of Jack in the darkened hallway outside the door to room 237 to Hallorann on the phone in Florida; the way the lighting and composition matches creates a ghostly effect!

the way that he cuts areas of interest through faces and matches angles (of non-symmetrical objects) from shot to shot gives the whole thing this strong feeling of inevitability.

What a great compilation! Seeing these strung together creates a kind of euphoric film in and of itself.

For me, they were all smooth and nonintrusive. But I grew up with cross dissolves in film, so... Hearing that lullaby in this context made me think of Shakespeare: ‘To sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there’s the rub!" Don't know why!

For some reason I think of dissolves as being like something only films of the past really did, as you see films like The Godfather or The Shining doing them consistently but then modern films don’t really seem to.
@clumsydad7158
@clumsydad7158 11 ай бұрын
i'm not sure, but then of course there is often that sense of impatience in modern cinema, where it's supposedly the job of the movie to keep the audience titillated from second to second

@@clumsydad7158 You do get a lot, I think. A lot of films are getting longer and longer now, but there’s always a semi-vocal debate over whether such and such needs to be so long, and I think that also gets to people’s impatience when it comes to films with more glacial pacing. Of course a lot of people only seem to care about the plot now, rather than story or aesthetics or theme. If it’s not moving the events forward, it must not matter.

under the pretense that a dissolve represents a passage of time, you could really stretch it and say that the final dissolve of Jack in the picture reflects the impossible jump in time the picture represents. Wow that is a huge stretch i should become a youtuber
