The Siege of Vraks was a major campaign waged by the Imperium to reclaim the world of Vraks, first from traitorous forces, and later from Chaos. Trouble on Vraks began when the rogue Cardinal Xaphan established a powerful following on the Departmento Munitorum armoury world of Vraks, proclaiming that he was acting against doubters and heretics that threatened the Emperor's divine rule. Xaphan attempted to organize a War of Faith as he established a stranglehold on Vraks, purging any who spoke out against his zealotry. However his sermons focused on the downtrodden workers and lower of Imperial society, and soon Xaphan became a man of the people. This drew the ire of the Ordo Hereticus, which became concerned that the Cardinal was amassing too much personal power and that his preachings of hope to the lower classes may result in open class warfare on Vraks. Thus the Ordo decided to dispatch the Cardinal, deploying a lone Vindicare Assassin for the job. However the assassination attempt failed, and when the attempted murder of their "savior" at the hands of the Imperial government became known, the citizens of Vraks rose up in open revolt.

If the sniper used a shield breaker round, he wouldn't have been able to shoot through the decorative pillar. He chose the turbopenetrator round to penetrate that, but didn't know about the refractor field most likely.

It's almost certainly a case of the guy weighing the odds and knowing that personal refractor field tech is extremely rare even amongst cardinals of the Imperium. All things considered, it was good bet to presume he didn't have one but even then, he lost. Moral of the story I guess is don't gamble. Even the best bets fail.

@@user-pm3wk6lw6m They are extremely rare, even among the highest echelons of imperial society, ESPECIALLY outside of the military. golden light can be achieved by other means, it would be both a giant status symbol to have one meaning there's incentive for someone that doesn't have one to fake it, and it would also be a good effect to fake in exactly the scenarios at hand, as mentioned before, had he used a shieldbreaker it would likely not have had the penetration to bore through an entire stone pillar.

My favorite Vraks story is of the two Krieg combat engineer teams who are in the dark, and about to fire on each other, when one sergeant (or whatever equivalent rank) calls out to the other unit in Krieg Battle Cant, and his counterpart responds in Krieg Battle Cant, and they're like "yeah, it's our brothers!"

The siege of vracks was the greatest example of "GW does not understand numbers" they specify that Krieg made use of 70,000 artillery pieces for a 96-hour artillery barrage and had ordered 100 million shells for said barrage. Today your average artillery piece can loose about 6 rounds per minute. So 6 rounds per minute from 70,000 artillery pieces for 96 hours adds up to about 2,419,200,000 shells. Their 100 million orderd shells wouldn't even cover a 20th of that.

Build upon fyrwolf. You have to remember in 40k the standard guardsman siege artillery being the colossus and bombard are in the 500-600mm shell size. Keep in mind the Largest ship mounted guns ever built and mounted on the Yamato was 450mm and the largest towed/mechanized guns at 600mm from the Karl. Each Karl shell in our world leveled city blocks. Remember In warhammer capital ships shoot apartment sized shells at each other as their secondary armaments.

The population of the planet is also a good example. 8 million is basically nothing in terms of planetary population, more people live in London or New York (both about 10 million). It’s also pretty funny that DK was amazed by the 8 million active personnel thing, considering the Germans, Soviets, Chinese and Americans all had much more than that during WW2 (14 million for just the Chinese, 13 million for the Soviets and Germans, 11 million for the Americans). Even the Japanese were pretty close with 6 million active personnel. Generally rule of thumb with GW numbers imo is to add atleast 1 or 2 extra zeros to it to make sense.

Ya the Shield Breaker round would have killed him but the shot needed to pass through the pillar of marble and that was the only shot he was able to find so he used a turbo penetrator round but didn’t think he had a void shield generator on him those are rare

Edit: I imagine the conversation among the strategists and logisticians went something like this. 1: So we need to supress this rebellion in this well-fortified world, but we can't just turn it into molten slag because we'd prefer it if we could recover the equipment stored there. 2: Ok, then we need to lay siege to it. Blockading the planet until they run out of food would take too long. Doing an old-fashioned planetside siege of the main fortification takes considerably less but with higher casualties. 1: Cool, the Death Korps will love it. 2: Although in the time it takes to lay siege, the enemy is bound to use against us the very stockpiles we'd like to recover, meaning we won't recover shit. So there's no real reason not to slag the planet. 1: Yes there is. The Death Korps will not love it.

Funnily enough, a blockade actually might've been the best idea Xaphans power and control rested on the belief that an invasion was imminent But what if it didn't arrive? What if nothing came? People would see he was full of shit, and doubts would set in, internal politics would tear apart the defenders in a fraction of the time they thought it would take Hell, if the inquisition sent a subterfuge team to spread dissent, cause accidents on minor power officials and commanders No siege necessary, just a blockade and subterfuge

The reason for the assassin's failure was that to shoot through the column he needed to use an armor piercing round and because of that he didn't choose a shield piercing one.

For anyone wanting more Siege of Vraks, Janovich is 12 parts in on an amazing animated history of the entire siege King and generals or Invicta style. Highly recommend it.
