This is really hard to share, but being a Vietnamese kid, "doing" my times hunting down Iain's Shadowline book for 3 years, looking through every single drawing of his on Google, and religiously watching his lectures and talks on KZfaq since my secondary school, I honestly cried when getting to hear his voice of warmth, enthusiasm and passion in this sketchbook series. Most sincere thank-yous to the THU team for making this available for free. I'll find a way to meet up with Iain one day.

I was lucky enough to get to see him and his daughter speak in the lecture hall at Lightbox Expo 2019, and then later in the much smaller panel at the same expo. His enthusiasm and energy is boundless and I could listen to him speak all day. Such a fun guy! We were all drawing along with him in the panel, and he was running around the room praising this person's hair, that person's nose, the way that guy was sitting....he pulls from everywhere and though his knowledge and skills are incredible, I think his sheer enthusiasm and love for the art make him one of the most fun and inspiring artists out there. This video was a great reminder of that amazing experience!

8:10 When he said he collect the pencils. I thought I was so weird doing that because I collect my pencils until the end. it pains me to throw them away, I mean they share with me so much, and I’ve been collecting them in a jar but I always had a little voice in my head telling me, what am I doing! This is not a normal behavior but now listening to him that he’s does the same thing it’s kind of a relief for my mental health. 😝
@Angie_P
@Angie_P 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's weird. Lots of people do that we just don't talk about it. Some people hold on to used pencils, others keep books they already read, or there is a stash of cookie cutters, whatever it is, they become your own diary. You become attached to them because it's something that has meaning to you. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks because it's very specific to each person and your own experience.

I have a mechanical pencil that has a crushed metal cap and plastic body that someone gave me because it had jammed and they were going to throw it away. That pencil is cheap & I don't use it much anymore, but I would never even consider getting rid of it. Not because of who gave it to me, but because of how much I have created with it. (Oh, yeah I forgot to mention, it's been almost 35 years since my pencil and I began our journey together. )

um new to drawing, but i get the feeling everything he speaks about is what artists go through, because i make music and know the feelings he's talking about. When you enter that space when things take over and the art starts to make itself, not even concentrating, but the body suddenly knows what do and when the work is finished. the feeling for me is still rare, but beautiful when it happens.

If I ever have a child, I hope they're as into art as I am. My mother used to draw a lot but she lost interest over time, but she supports me a lot with it. Just the idea that this guy took her sketchbook and added his own drawings in to work with hers? I hope doing that wouldn't be seen as rude if I did that with my child, I'd love to share a passion like that and make art together haha. I might see if I can start sneaking my friends' sketchbook away and adding little things in here and there for him hehe
