David Bowie once said that if there was ever a song he'd wished he'd written, it was There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Nuff said!

A six?! This is a 10 out of 10, a perfect song. Check out how many artists have covered it, how many fans have recorded themselves singing it and posted on You Tube. Listen to it again, the melody will haunt you. If you think this is a six then don't bother checking out their other songs, you're not ready or as the Smiths would say You Just Haven't Earned It Yet.

Tbh thats your opinion, but its just as valid as their opinion of giving it a 6/10, each to their own. I adore The Smiths, lifelong fan here, but I hardly ever put this in my top 5, I think it's a wonderful song but its far more overrated compared to some of their other songs, in my view. Give these guys a chance to explore the rest of their back catalogue and they can judge for themselves, no need to discourage them from further exploration simply because you disagree with them.

LOL - The Smiths had Johnny Marr, one of the best rock guitarists ever - check any Music Magazine Best of List. They were the exact opposite of synthethiser-based pop. Just check their Wikepedia entry: "Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the Smiths' focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the synthesiser-based dance-pop of the time"

This is undoubtedly my favourite song from The Smiths. I never get bored listening to it, no matter how many times I hear it. It's just simply beautiful.

Oh wow! 6??? You just broke my once 13 year old heart! The Smiths' greatly influenced New Wave and Alt music in the 80's AND John Hughes films. I grew up on the South Shore of Long Island NY and there were very few kids that didn't appreciate their music and lyrics. It's deep but not so surprisingly deep that we can't identify with some of the lyrics. We identify with it when we watch films, read poetry and books, and read about some of our most favorite haunted artists. Try- Boy With A Thorn In His Side and I Know It's Over. Significantly different songs but equally important. Thanks!!!

@@RGFamReacts the amazing guitar sound of The Smiths was the icon that is Jonny Marr playing. You can never mistake a Smiths song because of him. Check it out on What Difference Does it Make, a song that still gives me chills to this day when that guitar kicks in. And if you think those lyrics were dark listen to Girlfriend in a Coma! I think the darkness rattled you a bit, reminds me of my parents' reaction back then, lol

the Smiths are playfully melancholy ... Joy Division is dark. and although there is a lot of synth in 80s music, i'm pretty sure the Smiths didn't employ it.. that's a real flute you hear (from what i've read)

And and I was a fan way back before you even knew the smiths were alive. I do enjoy people like yourself enjoying them for the first time. It’s funny how music from the past is so influential today ask me any about the smiths and I can set you straight
