An interesting thing about this song is that just when you think it's a (gay) seduction scenario, the actual chorus - the "jumped up pantry boy" part - comes in and complicates the scenario. It's a double literary reference: to the Henry Green book Loving (in which a ring stolen by the "pantry boy" is a crucial plot point) and the allusion to it in the Anthony Schaffer teleplay Sleuth (where that "jumped-up pantry boy" line is just a class-war jibe). One Wally remark reminded me of an entry in the Uxbridge Dictionary: Tautology - the study of crustaceous reptiles, of of cartoon canaries
