Alan Rickman did such an amazing job playing Snape that people almost seem to forget how young Snape is supposed to be. He is only 32 in the first book and 38 in the last book. Alan Rickman was 55 in the first movie.

But it is also a contradiction. The 'good' wizards are very liberal and even take in wizards from non-wizard families and teach them magic. So that means that the direct parents of these children should know something about magic. See the rest of Harry's family. Alone here, it would have come out that there is real magic and you could never hide it. However, the wizards still want to continue to live in secret and hide from the normal world, more or less as it always was. So quite conservative and completely anti-liberal and open. The 'evil' magicians wanted exactly the opposite and showed themselves to the world and no longer in the hidden life. What should we learn from this? ^^ That both sides have something good and bad? That one should hide in society, that one is something special and can do something very well, so that no envy arises?

It's not even for his own safety. That's literally the first place I'd look if I wanted to find Harry. "Hmmmm. Dumbledore has hidden the child that killed my master. Where should I look first? @@connordervoncyberlifegesen8529 "this is explained in the books more clearly than the films" Oh you sweet summer child. "when Lily Potter died, her death protected Harry so he was put under a sacrifice protection spell automatically" Which makes no sense and only protects him from Voldemort, not ANYONE, so there's literally no reason he couldn't say "Go to this muggle house when Harry's sleeping and kill him. In addition, it only protects him from being TOUCHED by Voldemort, which happens ONCE and it's not even really Voldemort. If Quirrel was smart enough to USE HIS WAND he'd have gotten the stone easily. Let's see a 12 year old resist the fucking Imperius curse. "this is why when Voldemort tried to kill smol Harry, he was game ended for 13 years" Cause magic makes NO sense. Like NOBODY has ever been killed protecting someone until RIGHT NOW. We know for a fact Harry is the ONLY person to survive the killing curse, to the point he's "The Boy who Lived" so this isn't a thing that happens. "Now the protection spell only works when in the presence of a blood relative" Which again is a completely arbitrary condition and was NOT set at the start. It was NOT established that Harry needed to stick around his aunt to protect him, that's just something Rowling made up later to try and poorly justify her torturing Harry for, well even AFTER he started going to Hogwarts for no reason. Unfortunately she forgot that this "protection" doesn't fucking do anything. In fact if Harry were raised properly from the get go instead of RAISING HIMSELF, he'd never have needed to use this protection EVER. He wouldn't have fucked around with the philosopher's stone and gotten so close to Quirrel. Quirrel would have been CAPTURED and sent to Azkaban, trapping Voldemort in his body and preventing him from resurrecting as you can't come back when you're already back. If Harry had just minded his own fucking business, SEVEN BOOKS would have been rendered as "Harry learns magic and everything is cool." However going back even further if his dumbass parents had just made THEMSELVES the secret keepers, which is totally something they could've fucking done, then they'd be UNTOUCHABLE by Voldemort and literally everyone else, Harry could've been raised by his actual parents and probably become a piece of shit because his parents were both assholes. Sounds like a much more interesting story.

@@connordervoncyberlifegesen8529 I really don't. It's MASSIVELY overrated, like Twilight on cocaine. It's not well written, the characters are really boring, the magic system is a CRIME, and it's basically just Rowling going "Ooh look at me I can think up magic gubbins for 7 books straight without thinking for one instant how any of it could possibly fit together coherently!" She's a bad writer that got lucky, and nothing I've ever seen her write is anything I could consider good. As for Hogwarts Legacy? I'm on my second playthrough. I think it's a very solid 7 outta 10, and I would be all for DLC and sequels, especially if they improve on what's already there. It would have a higher score if there was more replayability. I hate that I know this, but Dumbledore left Harry with the Dursleys because Aunt Petunia shares the same blood as Harry's mother, Lilly, and thus the spell that Harry's mom "accidentaly" cast on Harry (sacrificing herself to protect him), would still be in effect even after Lily's death, as long as Harry lives with his aunt and under the same roof. And he would have this protection until he became an adult. IMO that was a huge retcon to make up for the fact that, yes, leaving Harry to the Dursleys was a royaly stupid idea.
@haku8135
@haku8135 Жыл бұрын
It was absolutely a huge retcon. Think of this. When, does this protection actually get USED? ONE time in the first movie/book. And it only happens, because of how INCREDIBLY cruel the wizards at Hogwarts are, first of all for no reason hiding the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE INSIDE THE SCHOOL! No reason! They could put it ANYWHERE ELSE, but they put it in a school full of children. Then they have Hagrid keep dropping hints to Harry. He's not just some bumbling idiot, this is all part of Dumbledore's plan. Dumbledore WANTED them to go after the stone. Then by CHANCE Quirrel is already there and LUCKILY he's fused with Voldemort, which is apparently possible, and this protection activates. The next time this protection comes into play, IS IN GOBLET OF FIRE WHERE IT IS REMOVED! By having someone ELSE kidnap and hold Harry, Voldemort has NO issues taking some of his blood to make him IMMUNE to the protection forever. Not that he even needed to do that, cause ALL this protection did, was stop Voldemort, SPECIFICALLY VOLDEMORT, from TOUCHING Harry. It didn't defend him from SPELLS, only physical contact. So it was pointless the ENTIRE time. Even if it defended him from both spells and physical contact, use a KNIFE! Bring a BUILDING down on him! There's SO many ways to kill someone without physically touching them, in fact there are rather FEW ways TO kill someone with physical contact. If Quirrel had decided to cast Crucio instead of trying to grab Harry, or better yet just cast the Imperius curse to control him, Voldemort would have gotten the stone. If Harry had just NEVER gotten involved, Voldemort would've been shit outta luck, cause he couldn't get the stone since he wanted to use it. Which again, apparently he can do..... He really should've done that to one of his Horcruxes. Even if you INSIST he must stay with the Dursley for the protection magic, WHAT POINT IS IT AFTER GOBLET OF FIRE!? Let him move in with Sirius, his GODFATHER whom btw has now been proven innocent of his crime TWICE, but is still being unjustly hunted by the obviously corrupt Ministry. Wizards are fucking awful people.

In the original book, Ron doesn't ride the Knight, but is a piece just like the other two. It makes a lot more sense then why Ron has to sacrifice himself at that point: if he ran away and didn't let the queen "take" him then they'd forfeit the game. I guess they felt having Ron getting his head smashed in would be too upsetting for kids, or just that it was visually more exciting to have him riding a giant chess piece.

If you read the book, in the first year Harry literally bum rushed the Snitch in a game and ended it in less than 5 minutes. So your concern for the rules of Quidditch is reasonable. In the third year they played a game in the storm and Harry got knocked out by the dementor and the game had to be called off. The other team did catch the Snitch totally by mistake and if neither of those event happened the whole school would have to watch a long ass game and classes possibly had to be cancelled.

Regarding the goblins-- they're hook-nosed, greedy, viewed as suspicious, and control the banks (the whole controlling the banks thing has not been present in previous classic goblin media). In Hogwarts Legacy, they also try to kidnap a kid to use their blood. Also in Hogwarts Legacy, one item in the game is a "goblin horn" (looking suspiciously like a shofar) that was used to "generally annoy witches and wizards" during the "1612 Goblin Rebellion" (the year a major pogrom began that killed many many Jewish people). There's also a Star of David on the floor of Gringotts in the first movie. You are no longer allowed to discuss or mention being Jewish at ALL in the Hogwarts Legacy Discord.

I just feel like you really have to look into it with a negative lense to see this though. Goblins in fantasy lore are extremely often attributed to being money or gold hungry, living in isolated communities and looking like small orcs with an often pointed, sharp or long nose. Goblins in hp are all of these points with a modern twist as with majority of goblin and orc interpretations. Why can’t you just look at it as a fantasy creature. it feels more fucked up as a ex conservative jewish man that people would attribute these creatures to such outplayed stereotypes. Furthermore if people really want to argue to apply these stereotypes it should be directed at the source of modern goblin attributes and inspiration on fantasy, the likes of Tolkien, George macdonald ect…

There is several reasons why Harry had to go to the Dursley's 1. Lily sacrificed herself trying to protect Harry, which created a blood seal on Harry so Voldemort couldn't touch him afterwards, and Harry had to go to the Dursley's because Petunia shared his blood, and he would be safe from the surviving Death Eaters. 2. Could you imagine how spoiled and pampered Harry would have been living in a wizard home? Dumbledore knew that Voldemort wasn't gone, obviously because of the Horocruxes, so he didn't want Harry to grow up being soft lol.

A small nitpick: Lily Potter had placed a protection charm, one powered by sacrificial love on Harry. This charm had some conditions. Not only is Quidditch incredibly dangerous, they let a 1st year student like 11-year-old Harry (who had never seen a flying broom until like a week prior to the match) take part. But then, Hogwarts is the school that starts teaching students Curse spells[*] several years _before_ they learn Protection/Shield spells!!! Even Snape remarked sarcastically on how stupid that was in book 2 (Chamber of Secrets). Granted, it was probably to show that Gilderoy Lockhart was incompetent as Defense against the Dark Arts teacher, but still... it also means Dumbledore is to blame for hiring this incompetent fool despite knowing the students would need to learn protection spells because Palpatine, sorry I mean Voldemort was back. [*] Heck, some 2nd year students came to Hogwarts already knowing Curses. Wow.

antisemitism is, in my experience, pretty much the form of ethnic prejudice which the average person is the most ignorant about (both in terms of knowledge about it and estimation of its current degree of prevalence). Maybe most people are taught, if anything about the topic at all, that antisemitism is just "racism but against Jews" and that's the end of it.

Trying to stop Harry leaving is weird, as it implies after what happened to his parents they are protecting him, but they hate him... So why are they protecting him? With the goblins I get it on the one hand as goblins look like that normally, but they aren't associated with money normally. That combined with JK being a horrible person means it could just be her being anti semetic

Experiencing Hogwarts on big screen was so different after reading the books. I loved it!! The Goblin thing is ridiculous. They were actually changed for the movie (looks wise) as JK said herself she used European folklore for the goblin's designs and in the books they were described very differently. You are right. With regards to the Jewish association with the goblins in the films: nobody (or at least very few) people are saying it was a deliberate attempt to be antisemitic. What people have been saying is that it shows a stereotype without critique. It's a magical world entirely made up by JKR, and yet of all the possible ways of depicting bankers, she chose one that just happens to be quite antisemitic. It's similar to how if a film showed black characters as only eating fried chicken. Actions can be bigoted even without intent. What makes it a problem is how you handle the discovery of said bigotry. The film makers however, I think get mostly a free pass on this as they created the work as described by JKR. In fact, in the later films certain aspects were changed to avoid some of JKR's worst decisions.
@6StarChild6
@6StarChild6 Жыл бұрын
I don't think that's a well-thought-out comparison. You just named an actual stereotype against actual people vs mystical creatures that “so happen to run a bank and have big noses”. I‘m not arguing that it's not anti-semitic but I am saying if you're going to throw black people in there the least you can do is come up with a better example. Maybe an example that is covert but you can still tell it’s about black people or any race of people. Just a thought.
@stoheha
@stoheha Жыл бұрын
Was odd he didn't piece that together. It's the profession the goblins were given that links them to the stereotype. Whether or not it was deliberate is still unknown, but the depiction itself is definitely spicy.
@zactron1997
@zactron1997 Жыл бұрын
@@6StarChild6 In principal I agree with you, but if I was more convert then I don't think my point would come across to those that need to hear it. You and I know the goblins are clearly an antisemitic stereotype, so to us it's obvious. To someone who thinks it's not antisemitic, a subtle example of bigotry would also not look like bigotry. As another example, some depictions of Orcs in fantasy are quite clearly coded as Africans, to the point where Will Smith got a movie deal out of said association. That example is just as clear to me, but I think would be met with exactly the same level of disbelief by someone who doesn't regard the goblins as antisemitic.
@zactron1997
@zactron1997 Жыл бұрын
@@stoheha Exactly. A coincidence is just a coincidence. But many coincidences are a pattern. And given JKR's other insensitivities (check out the video by Shaun for a much better breakdown than I could give), it's at least a lack of care when writing. I personally believe a lot of it is spiteful, but it's undeniably careless.
@6StarChild6
@6StarChild6 Жыл бұрын
@@zactron1997 I think a better example would be black people historically being portrayed as monkeys. There’s a history behind goblins being portrayed or compared to Jewish people just like there’s a history of black people and monkeys being compared. Stereotypes about black people liking fried chicken doesn’t fit “subtle” or covert racism like goblin= Jewish because it’s very much in your face. Everyone is aware of this stereotype but they may have a hard time connecting the dots of monkey=black people.
