The Starting Strength Bench is a flat utility bench that uses a red oak butcher block top and raw steel legs. It's uniquely Rippetoe and despite a lot of internet hate, I decided to give it a shot. Here's what I think!

So for $250 they can't give smooth splinter free corners on bare wood or powder coating or deburring the bare steel. But hey the logo looks good, so it's a good Bench overall? I'm confused.....

I'm a metal fabricator by trade and I would never send anything out of my shop in a bare steel finish. At least rattle-can a flat black finish on it, but for the price it should be powder coated. Leave the patina for the old barbells.

- Texas Strength Systems doesn't have a good manufacturing reputation. Requiring affiliates use this package for their equipment ties them to this manufacturer.Having the bottom of the wood be unfinished and provide splinters is a testament to their workmanship. - Please use more leg drive to see if there's any grip on the wood. The standard assumption is that there will be a large increase in slippage, but this wasn't discussed. - Two inches missing from a standard bench provides a less stable platform from which to bench. It may not feel like an issue at light weights but will become a concern at heavier ones. These are some of the concerns people have about this product. To force this product on all affiliates is, IMO irresponsible.

Tetanus, splinters, lack of shoulder support and lots of hypocrisy. Why not just make the top from a steel plate, obviously unpainted. Rust provides traction so you can use leg drive, barefoot, on your rusty metal lifting platform. The fact that Rip partnered with such a shady company like Texas Strength Systems doesn't bode well for his reputation.

I did this with an old school bench. Wife's mums a teacher and she had an old bench with the foam ripping and the ply wood underneath breaking. I just bought a slab of wood, I made the bench extra thick because I like being able to dig in the bench an not feel like I'm over the sides. I have a new foam one. Which I use now. But the wood one is great and still use it for box squats and step ups.

Are you sure, the affiliate gyms are required to use this equipment? I went to one not too long ago and they didn't have any SS equipment presumably because they had been operating since before the equipment had been made available. Pretty sure it's just the starting strength gyms, which are not open yet and are not the same as the affiliate gyms, that are going to be using this equipment.

I think you were way to easy on this bench. It's like the excessive Rippetoe hating has went exactly the opposite way. For Mark to suggest that this bench is designed in any way, to improve the marketplace is crazy. If the 'stable surface' is the thing, why not buy some boards and literally lay them on the floor like you would a fatpad for floorpresses? Lol lemme put a bench in the middle of my family room Coop. Come on now. The idea of the wood bench is fine, but the execution is absolutely dreadful and should be about a third of the cost. No coating for the steel is a joke as is not sealing the wood correctly. Just a cash grab to rip off those that have a starting strength affiliate gym. I feel, while you admitted you wouldn't buy one and it is overpriced, you painted this bench and Rippetoe in far too positive of a light for what he is doing giving his affiliate gyms sub-par equipment for increased cost.

Nicholas R that makes me feel a bit better, but the point still holds true. I don’t think the SS franchise owners expected them to release an absolute shit quality bench for over $100 than a good quality comp bench. That’s still clear exploitation. And obviously Rip is going to say it isn’t an issue, it’s his product lol.
@dgrzy56
@dgrzy56 5 жыл бұрын
Nicholas R I think this video shows that Coop cannot review SS equipment without bias. This was the worst review he has ever done IMO. And you really think Rip is looking at this bench with no sealing, bottom not sanded, logo bleeding, and no coating on the steel and thought to himself “yeah, this is a high quality bench that’s worth $250.” And I hope you’re right about the SS franchise owners knowing about the benches in advance. I just can’t believe someone would release such a bad product for so much money.

The starting strength bench is an overpriced novelty item, s are their c-channel racks. I can print the specs and take them to Eckles' machine shop, here in my hometown, and have that same rack for 1/3 the price. Maybe I should get my dad, a retired tool and die engineer, to start building racks and other equipment. There seem to be plenty of people ready to pay ridiculous prices for equipment that, to be honest, is terrible quality. I showed him the welds on the most popular rack that is made in the USA and he was not impressed, at all, by the welds. He did think some of the wright equipment/elitefts equipment looked ok.
