you mean his side? of his multi-million dollar scam, ponzi scheme , what a joke, the car may have been way ahead of its time, definetly was,but all the design except the cosmetic looks and seagul doors were flawed and pure garbage,what an operator. 1/ scams his way into NEW brunsick and tens of millions before he even has a real solid production car built as a prototype 2/clueless about reality of business, except funding his own expense accounts bleeding off millions in his liberace style, phony all the way!! 3/basically blackmails the premier wanting a project to succeed for those people . 4/ hires all family ,in true nepotic skill, who also were clueless in real car anything , like himself. 5/ once failing blames the N.b workers not himself and his pathetic everything, after all that province did for this scammer/con-artist /criminal 6/ at the end walks away / blameless and not responsible , meanwhile in every way a complete scam from before the 1st bricks were ever laid in N.b , shame he didnt do some time in jail where he deserved to be for more than a few years, at least 5 for sure wouldve been a good solid foot forward in the right direction!!

Excellent piece. I'm certainly no stranger to the Bricklin as my father purchased one new in 1974, 2 years before I was born. Several others have came and gone within the last 46 years, but the Safety White 1974 360/4 speed has been around my entire life and still is. Definitely a neat story. I had the honor of meeting both Malcolm Bricklin and Herb Grasse many years ago at a Bricklin meet in Massachusetts.

There is a story about somebody behind everything that was ever built and every business ever started. The ones who built them from the ground are the most interesting and inspiring,---but I guess we don't have enough paper to write them all down. Even my tiny business has a pretty cool story. I know when my business took off, (after all the experience as an employee at many shops and 3 college degrees I earned, and still just above poverty), and I started making more money in my one car garage than any union worker in the world, I discovered "Freedom",------------------ Until April 15th.

Against all popular belief, Because man has a brain to be able to create everything that we created, (if we are free to do so.), I don't believe man is suppose to suffer, and ever dime he spent, somebody earned, so they suffered a bit less too. I would do the same thing today if I had earned the experience.

Shame you couldn't locate any footage of the video Malcolm used to sell the idea of the car. There are apparently several sales videos that were made and should be many films made about the plant (though I think those are owned by the CBC and/or government of New Brunswick.) I've never gotten a firm answer (even from Malc himself) as to whatever happened to any of the corporations video/film footage. Malc actually joked with me that he wasn't even allowed to keep the blotter off his desk when the company went into receivership. Somebody out there MUST have these films....

The biggest factor by far, for the MSRP going from 4 grand to 7.5 grand is because only 700 were being made. The cost of production is spread over the amount of product made. That is why "One off" products are very expensive to make

Bill Luneburg was president of AMC from 1967 to around 1976-77. He was a former Ford executive with a gruff personality, and supposedly once threatened to cut all the toilet seats in half at the AMC factory because workers kept taking unauthorized smoke breaks in the restrooms. Luneburg worked alongside CEO Roy Chapin Jr. and oversaw a very successful period for the company, with the launch of the Hornet platform and the acquisition of Jeep. Unfortunately, both he and Roy bet big on the Pacer as a revolutionary new automobile, and it turned out to be a bad bet.

Great video. My sister told me that a newlywed couple whom she knew of died in each other’s arms when their Bricklin SV-1 flipped over and caught fire. She said they couldn’t get out of the doors. I have always wondered if it was an urban legend because people who are on fire upside down trapped in a car are usually in such agony, they don’t cling to others. I knew someone who drove a Yugo and the bottom of it fell out with him on top of it at a four-way stop. I believe that is not an urban myth.

typical Bullshit - i own a DeLorean and flipping the Car is just BS / Urban Legend. Before THAT happens, other Cars have already rolled over 10 times earlier. AND - Center of Gravity is as low as you Butt.... so the Car will likely roll on to the Side or even Floor again... just like other Cars. AND - "normal" Dors are already blocked in smaller Crashes and cannot be opened again. AND as you say.... People are usually already in other Trouble IF / WHEN rolled over this hard... AND ... guess what. OTHER Cars also catch Fire up to these Days... AND roll over.... And, And, And...

Can you imagine over 500 car companies in the USA at one time, and thousands over a span of 2 decades? That was the USA when we were "allowed" to compete between 1900 and 1920. Must have been exciting times, able to chase your dreams. I think I would have liked to be born in 1900, just as the electric grid was being set up. I wonder what I could have been?

I've been saying this for years. Just like people have the mentality of, "I saw it on the internet, so it has to be true," they also have the mentality of, "It didn't succeed, so it couldn't have been any good." There are tons of great cars out there that failed because of reasons beyond the creator's control - DeLorean, Tucker, Bricklin, Vector, Cizeta, and tons of others. As you stated toward the end, starting a car company is awfully hard to do. Thanks for the fascinating video!

Cooler to have than a DeLorean or Corvette. More style and flair than those two cars and doors that open and close on their own. The first car ever made having that feature.

At car shows all I hear from the Delorean owners is "I wish my Delorean sounded like a Bricklin!" Drove mine to the Celebration Exotic Car Show. Met 3 other Bricklins that was cool. We are in almost every video posted on KZfaq about the event. They want us back next year.

In my home town of Bedford Va was a company that restored these cars owned by a man who was supposed to be one of the original engineers to design it. He passed away and his family sold of all the valuable parts. He had a 6,000 sq ft building. They sprayed the fiberglass to make the panels he could completely rebuild the whole car. Blue Ridge Overland Gear Bought the property and building to work out of. There was a shell of a Bricklin sitting out back and probably a stack of 100 front bumpers the molds for the body panels was there all kids of parts sitting around. Of course they cleaned it all up but it was neat to see all the old pics from the 70s of these cars built to drag race and parts sitting around.

It just blew my mind them at there was someone working on these cars and I’d never heard of it in such a small town. There is one person in Bedford that has a Bricklin I see it every once in a while but never have had a chance to talk to him. The shell of the Bricklin is still sitting out back the shop as far as I know of if any one is interested.

The "perfect shot " you spent all of that time waiting for should've taken 1 minute max lol
@AutoMoments
@AutoMoments 3 жыл бұрын
Actually it was a little more complex than that... I had to get into back hatch of the car and lie down on my stomach with the camera. Then, since my camera was on a moving slider, I had to slide it back and forth and make sure I wasn't too close or too far away from the clock when it changed, or else it would be out of focus. Each time I missed the shot, I had to wait another 60 seconds before I could do it again. So between all that, it took at least 5 minutes to get in, setup, shoot, and get back out of the car. Normally in that time, I could shoot 3 or 4 unique clips of different parts of the car, but instead I only got 1. It wasn't the most efficient use of my time, but it was worth it to get the "perfect shot." Haha. Thanks for watching!

I also can`t wholly believe the story that Bricklin was going around bad-mouthing AMC. a) If true, it`s not a particularly well-known fact. b) Why would AMC continue supplying Bricklin with anything? And yet, there are still many, many AMC-sourced parts to be found through-out the car: shifter, rear axle, front suspension, turn signals and side markers..... but I suppose those could have been sourced from the places that manufactured parts for AMC.... I really don`t know. Still, I`m more inclined to believe Malc as the dude struck me as very forthwith and a straight shooter. He`ll tell you how it is. And 40 years later, nobody really has a dog in the fight anymore.... and I *CAN* believe AMC playing the game of ``every engine we sell you is one less engine we sell in our own cars`` 1974 was a big year for AMC with the launch of the Matador coupe. AMC would have been producing four cars (Matador Coupe, Matador Sedan, Ambassador and Javelin PLUS Jeep trucks) and probably the most common engine among those would have been the 360 4-barrel. Add in their less-than-Detroit ability to produce anything and yeah, I can see why they couldn`t supply engines. And from my perspective, AMC upper-management was often blamed for many of the corporations issues, so it would not surprise me if Bricklin had made one off-the-cuff comment and some AMC exec got a bee in his bonnet and decided to try and pull one over on this upstart named Bricklin. That would make it wrong on both counts. It may have been such a fleeting comment that 40 years later, Malc has no recollection of it. It`s too bad though the second-year cars got stuck with the 351 2 barrel. I`m shocked they didn`t go to everybody`s stand-by: the Chevrolet 350.

Malcolm was known for being outspoken, so the idea of him trash-talking AMC isn't that unlikely. There's at least one article we read from back in the day where an AMC executive reportedly said, "Oh yeah let's see him build cars without an engine!" So it's definitely possible it was a personal vendetta as well as a business one. AMC sales were hot in 1973, and full size Jeep sales were climbing, too. You're totally right that the 360 probably powered a lot of those vehicles. But sadly most of these details have been lost to time... I guess we'll have to guess to fill in the gaps.
