Had to do a JET deployment with the Army for my first time to Iraq and we had to go to Ft. McCoy for six weeks of training before going, and I was one of two SrA and everyone else was either an NCO or an officer. So we're at the range one day getting our rifles sighted in and qualified and I'm partnered up with a full bird colonel. After we fire our shots the instructors go downrange with one group at a time to see how we did. While me and the Col. are talking, for whatever reason he felt the need to pick up his rifle with the barrel facing downrange AT THE INSTRUCTORS. They see this and scream as loudly and politely as possible "SIR WILL YOU PLEASE PUT DOWN THE RIFLE!?!". He puts it down and then asks me what the big deal is, the safety's on. I just smiled and nodded because I didn't want my newly promoted ass to tell a full bird he's an idiot.

Ok, so I am an old SFC retired fart but some of you guys might appreciate this. We were a Divisional committee group of institutors, I was in the weapons section. This was the 1980's most of us were Vietnam veterans, we had this officer who had been upped and outed by half a dozen commands because he was purely nuts! We are training BCT troops(yes, we were that good) on the M72A2 LAW firing 9mm subsonic tracer ammo. Troops are on the firing line, line is hot and THIS Captain wants to fire a training round! So the sergeant on the spot ok's it and the O3 takes a loaded weapon and prepares to fire. Sergeant Deano sees something is wrong and screams a cease fire! He picks up the weapon from on the captain's shoulder, turns it around so the muzzle is pointed down range and allows him to fire. This captain was a Veit Nam veteran like many of usand he pulls THAT sort of crap! Later I met men from other units, other divisions who also had stories about this same Man Dog Captain! The guts you meet!!

I was a SAW gunner who was sent to Fort McCoy for my second deployment to Iraq. At the range, after we did our shooting we were told to make our weapons safe and walk forward to check our targets. So I put my SAW on SAFE and got up to go see my target. Was 3/4s the way there with everyone when some range safety started yelling about an unsafe weapon. Yep, mine. After fixing the issue(no one yelled at me or anything) I turned to my squad leader and asked, "What's the big deal? It wasn't going to shoot itself while we were downrange. Had the safety on." He just shook his head, smiled tiredly and responded that that's just how things are. The range guys were right. They said before we began that guys who had deployed before were the worst at the range. Full of ourselves and too comfortable to be range safe.

I was playing lane safety during quals and had to teach this girl how to load the damn weapon. It was almost like they'd never been to basic. She surprised the hell out of me when her target had a dime sized group in it. All she needs is somebody to hand her a loaded weapon and point out what needs to be shot hahaha. Thank god she was supply or something not combat related.

Grew up shooting guns my whole life.. af shooting ranges ruined it for me man. I could handle the firearm safely and everything, but the whole 16 hours to fire 200 rounds was so shitty and they were so mad when I wasn't hitting on point. No matter how hard I tried I shot like shit out there. The instructors were usually annoying as fuck too, especially the civ contractors. Giant ass holes. So glad I'm out.
