Yes, athleticism most times is a given trait. However, biomechanically, it is not only interesting to understand what separates supreme athletes, but also beneficial for basketball players who can enhance theirs by adding techniques to their game! Check it out in the video above.

The funny thing is, back when I was still playing basketball on a daily basis, this technique becomes an automatic to someone who wants to explode to the rim/pass by defenders as a go-to-move. Back then I did not know I was doing it. Only recently I did when I played basketball with my friends again. It works and it's effective. It helps you lateral movement as well your crossover. This channel is awesome man. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for a great video. Would be awesome to get a video with ways to train these techniques but for the main concepts : stay low and on the balls of your feet, when driving by a defender it is better to take longer strides and triple extension is more effective for jumping explosively

In terms of decelerating I notice that I'm often fighting my brain which wants to get into not only the negative shin angle, but also the backward lean of the upper body. I unconsciously project, "I'd like to slow down," of "I'd like to change directions," in advance of when the move should actually take place, in response to the defender, which has two negative results; 1. It cues the defender, and 2. it's inefficient. Keeping the hips engaged (low), committing my upper body forward, and using the forward leg and core to absorb and generate force feels most efficient for me. Dribble stop drilling helps cause I can use the ball and add a boxing-like exhale to get the core involved and produce deceleration force. It has taken repetitive training to COMMIT to the forward motion prior to deceleration. There are many athletic movements that are counter-intuitive to my brains set-point and need re-grooving from a neurological perspective. I sometimes think those set-points is are largely responsible for baseline athletic differences.

Yeah it maybe true that basketball can't be taught to perfection, but it's in a process of learning it for yourself. It's easy to read a book but hard how to use what you learn. Although your vids always help me complete my game. I got that extra boost I needed all along

Great video. I was wondering about your take on foot positioning during lateral change of direction. While I agree that when you initiate lateral movement and during any sagittal plane movement, you should be on the midfoot to engage the tensile structures, I always coach my players to stop using the full foot to put the ankle in a close packed position to avoid ankle injury when planting and cutting back in the opposite direction. I believe you may sacrifice some plyometric power, but you also create a more stable base upon which to decelerate. What do you think?
