In my opinion, this arc alone was one of the single-most greatest pieces of anime storytelling of all time. There's so many layers to it and the way the characters change and interact throughout feels so real to me.

Honestly I think when Gon killed his first chimera ant is criminally underrated. Gon went from a happy innocent kid to ending a sentient being’s life with his bare hands without giving it a second thought. The change in his character is amazing to me

My favorite moment of the whole arc is maybe even the flashback/explanation of the Miniature rose. It reflects the situations of our own world so much and thats why I like it so much

I love this arc. It made me laugh, shout, cry and fear. One Piece is my favorite manga...but nothing in OP has come close to the quality of this arc. I really hope we get to see the conclusion to this story.

two of my top moments that I feel like not a lot of people talk about: * Ponzu's death at the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc. It's overshadowed by a lot of stuff that happens later (rightfully so), but somehow the merciless feeling of her just being shot, without a fight or anything and being eaten later just sets the stage and tone for what is to come, and while I did forget some things on the list that Tekking mentioned, this moment stayed with me! * Welfin's transformation from a garbage character to one of the MVPs of the arc! I love this moment! I didn't like Welfin, didn't really know why he was there.. But when, at the most crucial moment, he blabbered out 'Komugi?' I knew that putting up with Welfin had been worth it! Going from a character you hate to a character you cannot help but love in 1 moment is probably one of the greatest and biggest redemption moments for me in HxH and anime/manga in general

You don’t know how hollow I feel about how that opening didn’t rhyme.

My favorite moment is when youpi spared knuckle, morel and melorone. Youpi was seen as this dumb brute, but in that moment he shows honor and spares their lives.

When Welfin said "Komugi" to Meruem it shook me to my core i'll never forget that moment

Koumugi is unironically one of the best characters/the most important character of this arc RIP.

So if tekking talks enough with the brick he can start cringing people like the brick can... it’s called double cringe

A Hunter X Hunter video from Tekking? Didn't expect that

Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. this is a copy pasta :)

It’s so crazy how mureum being bored and playing board games seemed like filler at first, and yet it turned into THE MAIN driving force behind meruems evolution throughout the rest of the arc. He keeps saying he’s gonna be a monster and rule the world and in the end he kneels before a human in order to spend his last moments with the one person who brought him a feeling of comfort and love

I don't know. I never shared this fandom's appreciation for Meruem. He works very well as a villain but I just never bought the whole "Oh he becomes so empathic and good towards the end and humanity is revealed as the true evil" theme. When Meruem is in his "transitional stage" right before he fights Netero, he is still pure fucking evil in my mind. Like, the things he wants to do to humanity, putting them in camps, sparing the ones he thinks are "worthy" and using the rest for food is still very much up there with the absolute worst of humanity. Even in his final hours, he is really only able to care about one person. He doesn't have much empathy for anyone else and he doesn't show any real remorse for anything he had done until that point. They really wanted to convince me that it was such a tragedy that he was dying now that he was a good person, and I just don't see it. He is only able to be a "good person" BECAUSE he is dying. He knows he is a dead man walking and wants to spend what little time he has left with the person he loves. That may show grace in defeat, but I am not convinced that he would have any greater respect for human lives as a whole if he wasn't so keenly aware of his own mortality. Meruem is still pure evil in my eyes, but he IS a human sort of evil, and that is still a powerful and subversive way of taking out the final boss though.

Ive been waiting for so long to get his opinions on the chimera ant arc!!!

Gon is a psychopath. I legitimately think that is a part of his character that is gradually unfolding more and more as the story goes. I havent read the manga but I would not be surprised if he's very problematic when(if) the manga finishes *edit:* At the beginning we see Killua as more of a psychopath, through making his first real friend he changes and is better able to manage his impulsive bloodlust. Thats why he loves Gon (also his mom wanted him to not be friends with Gon bc she felt he would grow softer/weaker but his dad gave him the okay and encouraged him to keep his friends close but it seemed like the dad had *heavy* ulterior motives. Like a "kill those closest to you for the eterna mangekyo type of vibe imo but masked as "always be there for your friend" but I digress)... anyway Killua changes but Gon starts to go down a similar route to Kurapika but worse than Kurapika bc Gon's isnt as gradual. He threatened to kill Komugi just bc she was important to those who killed Kaito.If this is how he deals with emotional situations I cant imagine what will happen when stakes are a lot higher towards the end of the series.

Been writing a book as a hobby recently and I was listening to this in the background while writing. Listening to you go over all the points on why just this section of the story is so good really inspired me to step it up!

Gon wasn't being insensitive, selfish or abusive about Killua's hands being wrecked. This was a moment of utmost trust and respect between the two dudes. They knew what they were getting into and how to get out of it, and this showcases their confidence in each other. Tarnishing this great moment saying Gon is kinda okay with Killua being hurt is kinda... hmm.. dunno.. I can't quite put my disappointment into words.

You should definitely do more HxH content now that One Piece is coming out less frequently. In an ideal world, I'd love to see you become a full on Hunter X Hunter channel after One Piece ends but all the hiatuses kinda make that hard. But yeah, thanks for another great video!
