If her brain is telling her that every stranger she meets are nefarious government agents wanting to inflict suffering and ruin on her, random knuckleheads like us are *the absolute last people* who should be trying to play hero for her. i remember hearing about this person like 7 years ago and i had completely forgotten about her

When I was in S. Korea, I spoke with some local friends about Chip-Chan. They were fully aware of her, and the online attention. I think it is important for me to share this whenever she is brought up, so this is what I was told- She has a 'support network', but she's a shut-in. Those that can be considered close to her (she does have family) find it difficult to check in on her, so just like everyone else- all they can do is watch, and there are people who watch her 24/7, and can react to something if it happens. It's a slow process. She has people who know her and care about her, but she's very troubled. This is a lady that has endured something bad, in some way- and it broke her mind. One person mentioned that she might have gotten a divorce, and if children were involved... it's quite common to see a family breadwinner (the father) have custody of the children... I'm sure you could imagine what that does to a mother, especially in a culture that emphasizes the importance of having children and places motherhood among the highest of honors (birth rates are currently dropping below sustainability in S. Korea, so having children is encouraged and children are treasured in their culture, the women will go nuts when they see a baby of any ethnicity). Her situation is very delicate. It requires nothing less than experienced professionals, and very few people are equipped to help her- in many cases, good intentions can actually cause more harm than good. She was known to have some minor skin blemishing/rashes before 2020, and some of the theories were that they were related to stress (I have personally known a few Asian women that will break out in hives if they get stressed out), but also because she may not be laundering her sheets and clothes (She wears/has worn the same things for several days in a row, I think). The people I spoke with said that the concern and compassion of others is admirable, and it is not lost on them... but it may be lost on her (at best). If she recovers- and it won't be easy or fast if she does- but when that time comes, I'm certain we will all be happy because we all want the best for her.

I cannot speak about the situation in South Korea, but as a foreigner living in an Asian country (Japan), I can assure you that the "you are weak" mentality is 100% true. I suffered depression some years ago due to bullying at my old workplace, and when my lead found me crying she straight up told me "your heart is too weak." They seem to slowly be changing their minds (at least here) but having depression or any mental health issue, your workplace can deem you unfit to work, and you could be fired. Young people are more aware, but those in the seats of power are still the older generation who just tell you to "shut up and clench your teeth" I really, really hope Chipchan can get the help she rightfully deserves because being suffering like this for over two decades is something I do not wish for anyone.

I've been aware of Chip-chan for years and I really hope she gets the help and support she needs. I think a lot of people find out about her and go "ooo spooky/scary/weird" and don't realize how tragic and dire the situation is, and how much her condition has ruined her life and taken away from her the majority of her time on earth. I've noticed the internet (and especially in the "unexplained mystery" circles) has a habit these days of turning people with serious mental health conditions into a spectacle; it always happened but it feels so much more common over the last decade and it's depressing to see people who need genuine help labelled as a spooky mystery or something to be "explained".

Im glad that she is at least getting outside some times. That was always my biggest worry with her.... Ive been following her story for a few years now as well and wondered wtf happened to her. I hope the people closest to here are looking out for her.. This is so sad and worrying

It’s so sad that she’s been living in constant paranoia since the 90’s. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must be for someone like her to live like this for 20+ years. I feel so bad for her.

I've seen a friend of mine being taken by Paranoid Schizophrenia. She believes the mafia is watching her every step, and she's afraid of her own parents because she thinks they have malicious intent. She's very fond of me for whatever reason, but I've honestly become afraid of what she might be capable of doing, be it to herself or strangers, especially after she suddenly tried strangling my buddy with a cable. It's sad, she never seems relaxed, always on the edge. Suspicious of everyone and everything. I'm glad that the stigma around mental health is slowly burning out, at least in the western 1st world.

TIL I’m 5 years older than Muta ANYWAYS every time I hear about Chip-chan, my heart breaks for her a little more. I’ve been in hospitals with people that paranoid. Even when mental healthcare is available, it seems next to impossible to help people suffering in this way because they don’t trust much if at all. And yeah that guy claiming to want to marry her is a creep. It’s also clear that someone in that state is unable to consent, it’s nothing less than predatory to see her like this and think “I’m gonna marry that girl.”

I think its also important to mention that the most essential step for Chip-chan's mental health is her coming to her own realizations about the reality of her situation. If people try to force her to see that there's no mind control device it's only gonna make things worse. Theres this old "joke" in psychology that goes essentially like "A doctor was told that there was a patient waiting for him in his office. The doctor walks in and tells the man waiting for him good morning, the man responds with, "Doctor you must be quiet! There's an FBI agent listening to us in the closet." The doctor walks over to the closet and asks, "well how did he get in? Did he walk in? Fly in? Teleport in?" The patient answers no to all. The doctor then rips open the closet showing nothing inside. The patient excitedly says, "Oh my god doctor! Thank you for opening my eyes! They *can* teleport!" If you have to open the door, you're telling them there is a possibility that there's an agent in the closet. But, hey what do I know I'm just some dumb KZfaq commenter.

I remember when Muta made the original video about Chip Chan, damn I feel old. Between then and now I kinda kept going back to her channel and looking at all the videos and stuff, and I remember talking about a few of my friends about it and how sad it all is. One thing that interests me, is that how does she actually make money to buy food etc etc, since she must be streaming daily and she’s inside the same room for agesss, how is she paying for everything?- maybe she works from home or something like that. I can’t really imagine her being able to do a job, so perhaps people online give her money to help, or maybe her family does, if so- i wonder if they have tried helping her. As a Korean/Canadian Citizen who lived in Korea for a number of years and someone who has worked in both the private and international education sector... I can say Korea has a big conformist society. Anyone who goes against the norms like people that have mental or physical issues are often ignored by people. The movies Parasite and the show squid game excellent commentaries of the real life situation of many... now image compounding that with people who have mental or physical issues being considered outcasts of society who are better to be kept "out of sight". This also applies to almost every step of society. In education teachers are often encouraged to sweep the 'bad' students aside and they're just allowed to sleep or do their own thing without worrying about giving them help or a proper education. When you go to hospitals you're often told "you have a problem because you're not normal, we can't help you. Please understand our unique situation." And when you go to parts of government often you'd be turned away if you're not "normal" to deal with.

It frustrates me to hear "I'll talk some sense into them" - as if mental health is just a matter of having a good down to earth talk. You cannot talk someone out of a mental health issue any more than you could talk a cancer patient into remission. You can't reduce someone's blood pressure with a conversation, you can't cure illness by talking about it. Mental illness is not a lack of serious conversation. Aunt Sue got gout? Would you say, I'll fix it, I'll talk some sense into her. Of course not. However, if Aunt Sue got dementia, folks think they can talk her out of it.

That's a rabbit hole I haven't heard in awhile, I'm surprised it's still around but there is that bittersweet nostalgia from a time that's in the past

Thank you so much Muta. This is one of the worst epidemics in the world. I went through depression from the age of 6, major family loss, I am now 44. I was raised with the same outlook of mental medication and help from professionals as being taboo. Only now, looking back having gotten help for the last 4 almost 5 years can I see how much of my life was wasted feeling the depression, the negative voice in the back of my head. Now my days are filled with peace and contentment like I have never had before.

A recommendation regarding these types of topics is a book called "Burnout Society by Byung-Chul Han" he's a south korean philosopher who lives in germany and also talks about things like the mapo bridge in seoul or how self exploitation and mantras like "yes we can" have more of a diabolical aspect that wears down anyone who tries to reach this fake freedom in an achievement oriented society which ignores mental health problems and creates tons of self generated compulsions in total until it's too late. There is also a youtube video of it with english subtitles as well for those who are allergic to books

I'm so thankful for the way you talk about mental health, sometimes it feels like everyone online either calls people crazy or schizo or they get super infantilizing about it. I wish more people would take this approach of being factual about the situation, while also not downplaying people's suffering, they way you talked about how real this must feel to her was absolutely the best approach because I feel people tend not to the think about how mental health can affect your thinking, especially those who've never experienced delusional thinking before.

Completely forgot about Chip-Chan even existing on the platform. I've known people that have had paranoia and other mental illnesses linking off that and you can make some whacky things up, but believing it to be your own reality. The skin lesions/ulcers look pretty serious as well and can certainly cause Sepsis if the Cellulitis is left untreated.

Thank you so much for your empathetic and gentle approach to this subject. I experienced post partum psychosis and had symptoms similar to paranoid schizophrenia for around a year. Whenever I hear about situations like this, it terrifies me for them. Thank you for acknowledging how real her distress is and how real all this is for her. That is something so many people really do not grasp. I can’t imagine what it is like to spend most of a lifetime in this kind of constant distress. And yes, random people should not go intervene. Not only is that not going to accomplish anything but it could make things worse.

3:40 The first thing that drew my eye in reading that documentation, is the statement about the right foot being connected to the right side of the brain, which is erroneous, limb and body control is flipped, left for the right, right for the left. And, yeah, this is some seriously disturbing stuff, hope that lady gets some much needed help and soon.

I’m a mental health RN. Honestly I see stuff like this all the time and services available for those who are afflicted with some disorder that makes them lose in touch with reality is really sad because it is so limited in most communities and basically sets them up for failure. Hate seeing stuff like this. It’s even worse when it’s made into a spectacle and others try to take advantage of it.

I can imagine in a situation like that, it can be frightening but there's always the hope that things will be addressed accordingly and they accept the help to improve their own well-being.

I hope she will be alright, and yeah, mental help is heavily stigmatized. The dramatizing e-people who use mental illness as a defense mechanism or personality trait, are not really helping to get the right attention to it either.

I can agree that mental health services aren't great, I suffer from severe depression and the services where I am are very very lacking even after looking for help the most found would be the support lines to call. Hopefully things get better around the world so less people suffer and more get help

I suffer paranoia that can get pretty bad with stress to the point of hallucinations. And her case always fascinated me. It'd take nothing for any person but especially someone already depressed and sick to get their life this badly fucked. I've always thought this P character is probably a social worker or even a family member (or members) that checks on her or used to at least and her mind constructed this character out of them.

Even if South Korea championed mental health help, you can't force help on someone who hadn't asked for it/doesn't think they have an issue. As much as we'd want to, it would not be legal for any of us -- even if we were all South Koreans -- to forcibly drag her to a mental health clinic. The social welfare worker can encourage her, yeah, but she gets to make the choice herself. She still has basic human dignity, and we should respect that.

A relative went through this. It began with her being hacked. I believe she was so shocked by this that it triggered a schizo paranoia psychotic break. The story changed from hacking to a device being used on her. After seeing a medical doctor, she took meds that diabetics take for the shocks they sometimes get. After that resolved, it wasn't about the "device" anymore. She refused to seek professional help, and doesn't believe her mind is betraying her. But I've worked in healthcare, and every doc and nurse I know replied schizo paranoia to the symptoms I gave.

i think i heard of Chip-chan from you many years ago and the most recent i've heard of her was in a video by Dantavius. The comments there relayed an update that she was in a terrible condition with bruises and fungi. So, it's just.. so sad, no one should suffer like this, any mental health disorder is a terrible curse (i know cuz i live with one) and it's unbearable if there's no one out there for you. At least she is accepting bits of help now.. maybe out of fear? i dunno..

Shout out to Mutahar for being a real one. Mental health is super important and self improvement relies on constant self-checks and awareness. I think there's no better way to handle it than asking for help. Life is difficult enough already for so many people, and dealing with mental illness or some cognitive distortion can make matters much worse. Best we can do is facilitating resources like counseling and therapy so those who need help can access it. Thank you for the video!

I think what makes it worse for people to open up and seek mental health professionals is TV/movies especially back in the day, I'm not sure about now and recent years, but growing up in the 90s and early 2000s and watching movies/TV shows, shrinks were always portrayed for laughs or as something useless. Beside The Sopranos I don't remember any other show or movie where psychiatrists are taken actually seriously and mental health as a whole as a necessary thing, the main protagonists always had to deal and grow on their own and psychiatrists were memed like "and how does that make you feel". Movies and shows have a huge impact on people's way of thinking about many things even tho most of the people don't even realize it.

I remember hearing about her years ago. I stopped clicking on her articles for a reason. She needs help that the internet and their gawking ismt able to offer.

Chip Chan’s always made me so sad, all you can do is just hope that she’s safe and she has people in her life who care. I remember people thought it was funny to troll her and stuff like she was a lolcow or something when she’s most likely an unmedicated/not receiving much treatment for what must be some form of schizoaffective disorder and is constantly having stress responses. I’m really glad that you emphasizes the importance of mental health and breaking down the stigmas surrounding it that plagues cultures all around the globe. Sadly, even in this modern era, many view it as purely a mental weakness and something that you just have to get over. As someone that’s bipolar, I was not diagnosed with it until succumbing to an alcohol addiction, as, ironically, substance abuse is usually linked to that mental disorder, especially if it goes untreated. But, this wasn’t until far past the usual diagnoses or times it would be tested for, due to the stigma surrounding it and the fact that my parents didn’t want to entertain that thought or possibility. Point is, especially with the onset of COVID and all of the crazy, depressing shit everyone is dealing with, we all have our breaking points and it’s imperative to seek professional help whenever you can. Sadly, there’s a massive shortage of professional mental health workers within the field, so, people that are finally seeking much needed help aren’t getting it. So, it’s a real conundrum that we as a society are facing

I just have to mention how absurdly expensive therapy can be. 100$ for an hour? of course the majority of us are gonna swipe it under the rug. It's also annoying that some people get into it just because they some slight interest, it's an "easy" job(it's really not, unless you're literally just farming people for their money), and its a lot easier to get into than other "respectable" degrees like being a doctor or engineer, and some of them are so gossipy they'd fit right in with a group of grandmas obsessed with their image. and you bet your ass I'm not gonna talk about anything of significance about my mental health with someone if I even sense even a slight hint of that. It just makes me avoid the entire profession. I don't want to spend a couple thousand and hours of time just to find the right therapist or even just so they can gain my trust to only start getting proper help. The only reason I'd go to a therapist is check if they recommend me to do an ADHD/ADD test since I suspect it to see if they agree before I spend a couple hundred on an examination.

Chip-Chan is a very sad case and it may get sadder if she ever comes out of her delusions. To waste a part of your life to a mental illness is hard, and the pain it caused will be mental and physical, maybe even traumatic. I hope at least she can one day be free from fear.

Great video, mental health is one of the closest topics to my heart; one of my biggest motivators for school was creating the tools necessary to not only help my mental health, but maybe provide help to someone else, whether it be professional or just legitmatizing their feelings/vulnerabilities. Schizophrenia is something I've been looking into recently and have been listening to many interviews with people who are diagnosed. This does seem like one of those cases. Schizo-paranoia looks like this. People fixating on something, like people watching them, or a Truman Show-esque delusion, or playing out fantasies in your head, like when you enter a room and start thinking everyone is doing in relation to your presence.

I remember seeing a post where someone posted pics of someone stalking them in their yard, and there was literally nothing there. they would keep posting pictures and circling spots like "here!" and there was nothing. My wife is from Busan and this is all true, from what I've seen from my several visits to South Korea. The most alarming to me is the fact that the birth rate per woman in South Korea is 0.81. That is extremely low. Young people are not able or willing to start families due to expensive real estate, stressful work culture, and the heightened cost of living after the global overreaction to covid

Thank you for covering this. I was commenting on her "the cop is making my skin bad" videos for over a year when she first started her channel. She's been putting out multiple videos every day. The amount of support for her delusions has been really upsetting. At one time, about a year ago, she got some ointment for her skin. It started clearing up, but she stopped using the ointment and it got worse. At one point it got so bad that it looked like her the skin on her legs were tree trunks. I don't think it's entirely a mental health issue. Of course she's not mentally healthy, and it's hard to see, but she also revels in her audience. She puts disclaimers on her videos now pleading with people to stop giving her advice or help or anything that doesn't support her narrative. I hope she gets the help she needs, but she really doesn't want it. She's been "back" for a couple years. It's truly sad.

Truly sad. The crazy thing is there are so many other channels exactly like this on KZfaq. I removed finding this channel of this guy thinking he’s being followed by everybody driving around everyday screaming in anger why people don’t let him get to where he wants. He would point to random cars saying yes it looks like a normal car but he’s been tracking me for months. Such weird shit on KZfaq. Wish I could remember the channel.

As a US citizen native born with mental health issues, this is totally true. Despite the efforts being made, mental health is still too big of an overlooked issue. This is even harder for me when I have a lot of family who don't believe I have mental problems. It's always the excuses of me being shy, rude, having a lack of confidence, too soft, etc. More or less seen as weak like you mentioned about South Korea.

I've been completely unaware of this but I video chatted with her around 2012 for about eight hours...wtf...mostly normal conversation about culture but yeah...I'm a little weirded out by this.

It’s kind of sad that Mental health is ignored so much even still. In Mexican culture, men aren’t allowed to talk about mental health AT ALL. If you do you’re basically considered weak by everyone. Even in the US, it’s barely talked about. I hope Chip Chan starts to seek more help soon.
