The story details the tragic life of William Dennison “Denny” Clark, a football player for the University of Michigan, who became infamous for a critical mistake during the 1905 game against the University of Chicago, which was hyped as the “first greatest game of the century.” Coming into the game, Michigan was on a 56-game unbeaten streak, having dominated their opponents with a score of 495 to 0 for that season. The game against Chicago, led by legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg and all-American quarterback Walt Eckersall, was highly anticipated, drawing a crowd of 27,000 people due to the massive demand for tickets.
The game was intense and remained scoreless for the first half. A crucial moment came in the second half when Clark, in an attempt to make a game-winning play, decided to run the ball out of the end zone instead of downing it for a safe start at the 25-yard line. This resulted in a safety when he was tackled inside his own end zone, marking the only points scored in the game and leading to Michigan’s defeat by a score of 2-0. This mistake haunted Clark, leading to widespread criticism and personal despair, despite later attempts to defend his actions and clarify that the loss was not mentioned in his final letter before his suicide in 1932.
Clark’s life after the game was difficult, marked by financial distress, separation from his wife, and heavy drinking. In his suicide note, Clark expressed hope that his final act would provide for his family, showing no direct reference to the 1905 game, contrary to popular belief. The story challenges the narrative that Clark’s suicide was directly linked to his football blunder, instead highlighting his broader personal struggles. The recounting of this tale serves as a reminder of the intense pressures athletes can face and the lasting impact of sports on individual lives.

I'm not sure why comments were turned on, but they should be back on now.

Maybe KZfaq considered even the mention of suicide to be too sensitive to comment on.

It really is a sad story, for there is no one left alive who remembers that game.

I am a Michigan alum, and certainly a Michigan fan. We have very long memories at Michigan. We still remember a missed field goal in the early 1970’s that lost an Ohio State game. We remember the kicker, Mike Lantry. We remember Fielding Yost with reverence. But somehow we don’t remember Denny Clark. I think your video is a wonderful thing, even if it is a tragic story. Maybe this video, or at least this story, should be added to the Hall of Legends to help us keep our feet on the ground.

Him saying he is physically unable to provide for his family though he was of course willing, and his alcohol issues make me think that, considering how rough the game was back then, he probably had some undiagnosed brain issues which got in the way of his success later on. When we have the same issues for people who played more recently and with actual protective equipment, it would not be shocking at all to see worse issues in people who played in this period.

The thing about history is that it should be told how it was and not how we want to be. That's why I'm glad you covered this video and told it truthfully. fantastic and still really interesting video.

Thank you for following through with the production of this video. My thought on this particular story is it's exceedingly important in setting the record straight. How sad would this loose-ended story for it not to be researched and tied up in a bow (no disrespect in utilizing "bow"). No one should be forgotten as well as slandered. This puts an end to his tragic tale, and leaves it not in the hands of a free-wheeling pen of a "journalist" taking great pains and liberties, and to place an indelible stain on Denny Clark as well as his family. Thanks again... really well done. RIP Denny, after all, it's only football...

In newspaper parlance they say print the legend and not the truth. But this sounds like a truth that needs telling. Good job!

I remember that DB who fell over backwards from a head fake by Warfield in the 61OSU Michigan game. He left the team after that. I will leave his name unmentioned.

Denny Clark could have been suffering from CTE we see so commonly in today's Broken Grid Iron Warriors. The sport is dangerous today but nothing like it was when it was in Denny's day when it was normal to have a dozen fatalities per season. RIP Denny Clark.

As a loyal and lifelong Michigan i did not know about this until now. Thank you for posting. Dennie Clark certainly deserves to have his story told and people need to know. 💙💛💙💛

Last time a 2-0 game that happened in the NFL was 1938 Packers vs Bears. Packers Coached by Curly Lambeau lost to Bears George Halas. Bears won despite their offense only having 9 Yards Passing completing just 1 pass all game! Crazy 86 years later their coaches names are still synonymous with the teams they coached. 15,000 people attended the game in Green Bay at City Stadium. After the win Bears led the division with a record of 2-0 and Packers 1-1 Bears finished the season 6-5 and Packers 8-3. Packers won the division and punched a ticket to the Championship game. In front of an attendance of 48,000 fans they ended up losing to the Giants 17-23 at the Polo Grounds.

Its a fascinating and sad story about Mr. Clark. I had watched a few the videos on your channel before, but decided to binge watch the rest(11 of them!) today. Great work on these looking forward to seeing more them. I actually have read the John Sayle Watterson book, really interesting but yes a real academic work for sure.

I was not aware of this story and it's too bad that Americans value a game more than they value the athletes that play the game. There are several examples of bad plays that cost "critical" games that are still remembered 100+ years later.

Someone has to lose. It's only a game. Anyone who held it against him was a jerk.

I'm pretty sure that was before they added the forward pass. Must have been really hard to score back then.
