ive had many older toyotas with a fixed compressor. Never really had a problem other than ocasional r134 refill. Now we have a 2016 scion im (120 000km) and a 2012 corolla (95 000km). Scion has intermitent a/c, it works when its cold but stops when its warm (very useful 🙄). Corolla a/c works but seems weak. I have no idea whats the problem on the Scion because i need a computer to read those codes. What a pain in the ass to save a few $ in fuel.

At 6.0 you demonstrate turning the pulley and mention that all of the assembly should turn (or not in the case of the failsafe working) - However, on my compressor (Sanden PXE16) it all turns but the centre nut stays still - on your demonstration your hand obscures that nut for the most part and I couldn't determine if it was supposed to turn with the pulley. Can you advise please?

Had a clutch-less sanden px16 that worked and still works after 10years. had a broken line for two years and no oil leaked. The volume pumped without been requested is minimal, or none. So you will not lose oil. But the oil may become acidic....

2012 kia optima...i believe it is a clutchless VDC...low pressure side reading high...warm air at idle rpms....I rev rpms to 2500 and low pressure starts dropping (but still high reading) and air is cold.....does this sound like a compressor solenoid problem valve possibly?

help me growling Sound from AC compressor during idling with AC off , after switching ON AC no sound at all cooling is good but as I switch off AC or cabin reaches desired temperature sound again starts, is this bcoz of low compressor oil ?? (when refrigerant flows compressor has enough oil to lubricate and when AC off compressor doesn't have oil for lubrication as refrigerant flow stops(my theory)).. hyundai elite i20 uses VDC any one help...

I want to ask about my car's AC problem. The air conditioner is not cold anymore when the car is at a speed of 50km/hour. below the speed, the AC is still cold. I tried to test up to 4000rpm for the N and P car positions, the AC condition is still cold. I tried the compressor, the compressor sound a little rough. what do you think the problem is? Thank you in advance. my car uses a clutchless compressor (using a solenoid)
@MotorAgeMagazine
@MotorAgeMagazine 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting...at first, I would think the engine speed was the factor but since you tested AC operation at different RPMs, I think the next thing I would do is monitor ECM PIDs with a scan tool to see if there is an input that is falling out OR a pressure sensor signal is failing to report or report correctly. Start by monitoring the variable solenoid PID and the AC PID to see if the ECM is turning it off or failing to adjust the solenoid under load.

@@MotorAgeMagazine Thank you sir. I have checked the voltage of 12 vdc to the compressor. it was a turn off from the ECM.

I have a question. In cars with variable displacement compressors, it is supposed that the compressor is operating as long as the car motor is rotating. So, what does exactly pressing the AC switch button do in this case?

It could also engage the magnetic clutch. Some manufacturers still use clutches on VD compressors to reduce consumption when not in use

One item left out is the bad solenoid valve installed on the VDCs. 90% of the time the issues discussed in the video are caused by malfunctioning solenoid valve.

I just expected a little more from a motor age video, but I feel in this video you didn't give the backyard mechanics who watch your channel, anything that could actually save time and money. Good descriptions of the two types of compressors and how they work. Other than that, really short of the mark. Retire, hand over the reigns to a younger equally knowledgeable guy, who's chomping at the bit and will give people a good half hour of some good quick diagnostic steps to help get them going. That's my opinion. Stay safe and healthy! Thanks. Jpol.

First of all, MotorAge Magazine is not a publication that is targeted for the "backyard mechanics". This was a solid piece about variable displacement compressors. I know Pete well and he is highly respected in the professional arena. Pete does not need to retire to make way for an "equally knowledgeable younger guy" that can water down a complex subject for the backyard mechanics like you.

@@GearheadSchool lol. The this with a grain of salt! The fact that you took offense, to a viewer who simply gave an opinion on your video content and that you read into it what was in your mind, is fact that MOTOR AGE staff, Has reached maturity and is ready for the nursing home. I simply commented that you gave no real diagnosis of the problem, which was stated at the beginning as, customer comes in with complaint that system just isn't cooling any more like it used too. Let's see what's wrong! I simply suggested that you find a younger guy similar in knowledge...(that actually meant Pete is smart. In fact I like Pete). That was your first mental mistake. Then I suggested that you throw in more of the actual diagnostics, were I said for Backyard Mechanics (because you can't control who reads your magazine, but it's now known that you really don't even care that they as people, even exist) and me saying that triggered that big old brain again, who is better than any commenting backyard mechanic out there and can't admit there is anyone more knowledgeable. Your both highly respected individuals, but your letting your darn age and mentality affect the ability of your videos to actually help mechanics in the industry, with a real diagnosis of that ac system. I was going to stop there, but I'll add this in to boot. Backyard mechanics I respect, because I respect everyone. I've retired from a life fullfilling career as a SAE certified mechanic in all categories, and from paying the bills as a major shop owner, now selling my business, only to be asked to remain as consultant to the young new owners! FYI my old grey beard probably forgot more than both of you ever learned. I do think outside the box, and I evaluate videos and comment accordingly, with constructive criticism, where as you two well respected individuals, can do nothing but explain how things operate and criticize anyone who you feel in your brain, has upset the routine your stuck in, by giving you their God honest and not bashing opinion. Which is what I did and we'll see how long you keep this rebuttal to your response visible. I'm guessing a month at best, because it upset you when it shouldn't have! Oh and by the way, you better open that car door and let out your customers, because they are about to melt in there, without working ac, even though the variable displacement compressor has been explained. Good day and God hope neither of you get the Corona virus or you'll be telling the doctors their diagnosis wrong. Man you better than everyone and think you know it all old guys (lol I am one) really torque me. (But I'm glad I'm not that kind). Amen. Jpol.

I agree with gearhead. Your comment sounded like a butthurt DIY backyard mechanic. Pete isn't old, he's a sharp guy giving his experience to the next generation. He went into how to diagnose a siezed compressor, and checking PWM signals. Let's be honest, the age of DIY is dead. No DIY is going to invest in a bi-directional scan tool, scope, alldata, identifix, a/c reclaim machine, special tools, etc. A lot of shops around here don't want to do it. I still see shops subbing out alignments because they don't want to invest in equipment. I hope you weren't one of those shops.

The entire topic of AC can't be disclosed In a "easy video for backyard people to understand". Reasons as to why he specifically narrowed the topic of the video to one compressor type, and its operation, how to see if it's receiving the input it should and what it looks like. I think that's all you really need to know on the topic of variable compressors. Everything else should be knowledge you already know, or you can find elsewhere.
