I like Finland (not from finland myself) and i also watch a lot of videos about trans people because for some reason they are interesting for me (im straight and cis), so i was curious how is finland for trans people and im soo disappointed right now, its just horrible.

I've always been under the impression that Finland and most European countries were more accepting of LGBT identities than America and I always thought that there was less discrimination there but now from your education I know that I am wrong. It's really messed up that being trans is like taking an AP course in high school. Why the hell do I have to prove myself? How do you prove yourself? Why do I have to wait so long to get the medical care I want and need? Why the hell would I fake it?

Finland is in some ways behind the times (as in most of europe was horrible but most countries have gotten somewhat better than finland is now) but yeah, there's sorta less discrimination socially just because we don't really have a influential group of religious extremists as opposed to the USA with evangelicals. Part of the reason is that european countries kinda kicked out said religious extremists and sent them to the colonies so, uhh, my apologies? Another part is that there's not nearly as much awareness of trans people specifically existing and that the whole polarized culture war bs going on in the US just hasn't really arrived in europe until recently and it still isn't nearly as established as over there, partially because most european countries have more healthy political systems than the clusterfuck that is the US two party system where the parties mostly agree with each other on everything but social issues and partially because our media landscape isn't as bad. The downside of that is that legal changes move at a glacial pace. The law regulating transition in Germany is from 1980, literally called "Transsexuals Law", legal disputes over it have gone to the federal constitution court (basically our equivalent of the supreme court) several times with the relevant parts of the law being declared unconstitutional multiple times, the last 3 governments have promised to replace it with a new law that *isn't* unconstitutional but so far nothing has actually happened. Though tbf the current government was only formed last december, has two parties in it who submitted proposals to replace it that were quite good to parliament under the last government, which they weren't part of, and they said that they want to reintroduce and pass one of those proposals soon. So after decades of legal challenges and advocacy and politicians dragging their feet and conservative parties blocking any progress because people being allowed to change their name without a psychological evaluation is just too scandalous and destructive to the state in their imagination something might finally get done.

Honestly, America's whole tag line of being "The land of the free" and their whole freedom shtick makes them seem like they should be more accepting of others, but no. It's disappointing that the freedom that is promised isn't a Pokemon-like "gotta catch them all", it's just 2b2t levels of anarchy. Crushed my little boy mind and heart when I first found out the hard way in school and through the internet, but in all honesty? I think I needed it to survive. Though, further from these thoughts over my interpretation of the situation when I first found out about it, I haven't got much more to add.

This is weirdly similar story to mine.... I also used to know twins where one of them was trans in like 1st grade, used to be really close friends with him, then moved apart and somehow met again in 7th grade when he explained that he was trans. My first reaction was basically thinking how absolutely fucked I would be with my family if I came out like him, followed by realization oh shit I AM like him... Followed by basically all 7 stages from denial to acceptance. Like that was probably why I felt we had so much in common and became such close friends so fast in the first place... Despite the fact that personality wise we couldn't be much more different. Like I am the loudest fucking Finn you could ever know, he was the most quiet dude I ever met, we grew up in vastly different families and I had grown up mostly in north before first grade so I had like the thickest northern savonian accent you can imagine, and somehow we automatically kinda related to each other. He had his shit figured out way sooner than me thought, cuz I had only ever heard trans people be mocked and joked about and seen as something weird, till like 7th grade health class. I've been stuck in the fucking trans bureaucracy hell since I was 18, I'm now turning 22 this year, so it's been like over 3 years of endless waiting, and I haven't even gotten the god damn trans diagnosis or gotten started with testosterone... I swear if if I stay stuck in this bureaucracy limbo for much longer I'll either jump the border to Norway or try getting testosterone some less legal route. And is it just me, or does it feel like they're trying to give trans people as many other diagnoses as possible? Like they've been trying to find a way to diagnose me with autism or smth for fucking ages now without success, despite multiple doctors and shit being like I don't really fit any of the signs. Like my personality couldn't be more different from someone on the spectrum.... I am an extremely social case, have large friend groups, I have been really good at speech since young age, I'm great at understanding people's emotions, I don't really have any sensory issues, and I don't really have issues with changing my plans or anything on short notice. Honestly at this point it's slowly starting to feel like they're trying to diagnose me with something else as well purely because I'm trans or smth.

another shit thing about it is the new longwinded approach to even letting people IN the diagnosis-process (the whole fiasco with palko). idk what goes on in health "professionals" heads but putting off trans-kids diagnoses even more than usual shouldn't be it imo i'm lucky cuz i got into transpol two years ago (and got my diagnosis last year too). but i know a ton of people who aren't and have been thinking about resorting to getting hormones illegally which breaks my heart.

Process should go as follows: Go to an endocrinologist. Tell them you're trans. They determine if you're healthy enough for hormone therapy and work together to figure out what kind of hormones you need (not ready for HRT? Skip to the next step, minus the meds). HRT should come with referal for therapy, like the talky kind, because body changes are hard, even when wanted. This therapy shouldn't be about questioning your claims, it should be about learning to adapt to what's happening with the weird brain stuff that comes with, well everything, actually. Working on goal setting, managing expectations for transitioning (most trans women are not gonna look like a supermodel, and learning to manage those expectations can help disphoria overall if it's done in a supportive way), and overall learning to be who you want. Therapy as a standard co-treatment for HRT would help protect cosmetic surgery addicts and those with Munchausen's syndrome just as well as, if not better than, gatekeeping. I mean, the idea behind the gatekeeping for gender transitioning services is, in theory, to protect those that only THINK they want it. Well, if that's the case, let them. Let that 1 in 1billion person who isn't trans but is addicted to surgery, support groups, or medical drama get all the HRT and surgeries. Just don't let them sue after. That is their problem. We make transitioning as easy as getting a boob job, only the people who truly want it will go for it, still, because hormones suck. Medical stuff sucks. In short, we don't need to protect people with gatekeeping. We need to protect them by providing support.

We should make a petition and get as many people as we can to sign it so we can change the law for future trans teens
@Rowlesisgay
@Rowlesisgay Жыл бұрын
this is naive. petitions aren't law. advocating for illegal hormones is a very good idea, especially if we work to make them more accessible before and during the laws changing. the government has no business providing hormones in the first place, unless you live in a country with an actual healthcare system, in which case they should just be a thing you apply for.

This sounds so similar to the experience of Dutch trans people like myself, people here got refused treatment for being overweight, non binary, or autistic as well. We also have a 2 + year waiting list to start treatment, after which it still takes at least a year.

Thanking non-existent god for the fact that I was born in Argentina after hearing all the shit other trans people have to go through in... Supposedly _very LGBT-friendly_ countries?? Just to get their goddamn NAME and legal gender changed. Here you literally have to _just sign._ No diagnosis of anything, no invading one's privacy by being overly inquisitive about the decision, no eugenics. And you can do this as a minor too, by having a parent or a legal representative sign for you. Yes, if you're a minor and your parents are transphobes, you can get yourself a lawyer and get the ID change anyway. It can be bit more time consuming, but it's still facilitated by all the legal protections trans people have. I changed my ID when I was 15. The process of me modifying my birth certificate took less than a minute, as in literally just signing a few papers. Then, after the change was concreted, same steps to issue my current ID card. The entire process took two months tops. This should be the default, not the exception. As a non-sex dysphoric trans person, I got especially lucky. Having "becoming sterile" as a requisite to even apply for an ID change is so incredibly dehuminizing that thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach.

Hey, thank you so much for sharing your experience! I'm from the US and i recently started studying Finnish. I'm currently planning to move to Finland and go to university there. I'm trying to find more trans voices and resources in Finland. Specifically, I have curiosity and anxiety about saunas. I know that saunas are a large part of the culture over there and I'm very curious about how trans people navigate that, and how cis people there feel about trans people in saunas. Would you be able to point me in the direction of any other trans Finnish voices? :-) I of course and going on a binge of your videos hehe :-D Thank you again for sharing

I have a weird question😅 as far as i know there is only one pronoun in finnish (hän) both for men and women, so how could you try they/them pronounce? Do you you speak english with your family or something?😅
@Oakwyrm
@Oakwyrm 3 жыл бұрын
Not weird at all and you are correct, Finnish does indeed only have one pronoun. Except people usually use "se" (it) in casual conversation about everyone and everything, which might seem incredibly rude but obviously doesn't carry the same implications in Finnish as it does in English it's just. A thing here. And I do, in fact, speak English with my family, but Finland does in fact have more than one official language and I speak Fenno-Swedish as my second home language which has gendered pronouns. In Swedish I used the new-ish gender-neutral "hen" pronoun at the time instead of "han" (he) or "hon" (she).

My boys told me at all at the same time. My oldest said he was gay very low and like a question. I kinda got mad because of the low voice like he was scared.i told him I knew already. I told him I was bi. Hell almost a dude. They saw me as the strongest person they know. My oldest is also A sexual and a bearded drag queen. My 2nd son is bi but likes trance ppl better. My 3yr is bi. I support them all. My 7 and 6 year old are to young but they will also be supported by me no matter what. I also was watching ur other vid about how u had to be stabilized. Wtf. That so meat I'm sacking. Idk if I'm killing the English language but damn. I'm so sorry. Everyone should be able to make that choice not be forced.
