You're missing one point - you're writing / recording / mixing rock. If you'd be doing strictly electronic music, you'd quickly notice that with comparison to Bitwig, Live, FL or Reason it lacks a lot in the departments of creative FX, synths and modulation tools (LFOs, MSEGs, etc.). Even the samplers are very basic. Hope S1 steps up there in forthcoming versions!

Agreed 💯 Once I found Serum, ez drummer, and nueral dsp, all of a sudden, things started going really well. Of course I also got better with S1. But other plugins, I just get in and everything is really well thought out and obvious attention has been given to workflow and interface. S1 is overall basic in this regard. It works, but is not a joy to work with like others

The problem is mainly that young people are constantly bombarded by advertisements for plugins that "sell dreams." The older ones who have managed to mix tracks with 8 or 16 channels and just the console's EQ and a rack with 2 or 3 compressors, a reverb, are much more, I believe, aware that any current DAW and stock plugins offers 100 times more possibilities and quality than what we really 'need.'...
@mohokios
@mohokios 8 ай бұрын
the problems isn't about "selling dreams" plugin companies.. that's normal... same happening to every product someone is trying to sell... plugins aren't an exception on this.. neither someone "older" that has managed to mix in 4,8,16 or whatever channels means that does better anyway... there are many young people that are able to make miracles.. so old ones... the only difference in older eras is that people had really to educate themselves using their gear while the expenses for the gear were amazingly high, something that doesn't apply now... could you have a compressor for just 50 euros back in the 70's, 80's or even 90's? now you can... doesn't matter if it's the "best" or not... but you can have a decent compressor to do the thing it's supposed to do... problem is people in our days do NOT want to educated themselves, it's not about anything else...

Good point of View! There is a Big trend about audio software and plugins that "should make your mixes better". As always it's the ears not the tools! It's countless the times that I've tryed a plugin because someone made a video of it. But at the end of the day I always go back to use the tools that I'm used, like and trust too. 😁✌
@TJUnderGroundStudio

And the "older ones" still are not mixing with stock plugins only. Therefore the statement about "stock plugins offering 100 times more possibilities and quality than what we really need" is kinda off the mark here. In many cases stock plugs are enough for a start and maybe even for a release, but it's really not about offering a 100 times more possibilities than we really need. I think correct way is to say, first find your limits with stock plugs and then, if you really need anything more, find it and buy it. Not vice versa. Like mohokios said, bigger problem is, you have to learn your tools first - this is the real investment everyone should do.

Some people, like me for example, are not buying 3rd-party plugins with the thought that they would sound better or something similar. Instead, they buy 3rd-party plugins because they are working in more than one DAW. You don't want to remember all the different knobs and whistles in all your DAWs, you just want an EQ, a compressor, etc. But yeah, in general, all major DAWs already have decent built-in plugins to create a great sound.
@terrygray7465
@terrygray7465 8 ай бұрын
I was going to make the same point. I DAW hop and it's easier to "take my plugins with me" as I move around. But to Joe's point, I've limited what I use. I'm mostly FabFilter and SSL (because I have their hardware). Sprinkle in a few select PA plugs and that's about it. I don't hoard plugins anymore.

Yeah, I completely understand the idea and agree 100% with you Joe. That also reminds me of another great and simple approach to things that matter, like the multiplatinum Grammy-awarded recording engineer Al Schmitt, R.I.P. who passed away at the age of 91 in 2021. He was a legend and left his tremendous music legacy, also impressive collection of great microphones, outboard gear, and the entire vintage studio where he worked closely with Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Natalie Cole, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and other famous artists. He used to say that he didn't really like to use compression or EQ; the best way to achieve the sound as he truly wanted it was through proper and accurate microphone choice and knowledge about specifics and applications for it. 'The right microphone for a task - that is my EQ,' he stated. 'When I'm recording vocals, I'll often use a U 47 or a C 12. These microphones have a very natural sound, and they capture the voice in a way that requires very little EQ. I'll sometimes use a bit of EQ to boost the high frequencies or to cut the low frequencies, but I try to keep it to a minimum." That was mostly the use of mixing desk, such as Neve 88R, which was his favorite one. Al said once "I love the Neve 88R. It's a great-sounding console and very versatile. I can use it for any type of music, from jazz to pop to rock." He made great use of mics and preamps, and these sessions were recorded on tape. This is the best example of simplicity and utilizing what you have at hand. Software such as Presonus Studio One always comes with all these tremendous plugins and it is a great arsenal of tools that we all have at our disposal already; mixing expertise comes with years of self-development, hard work, and professional experience to build your skill set.I believe that if you excel in mixing techniques on analog equipment and have a comprehensive understanding of the principles involved, you can essentially handle mixing on any digital audio workstation software using stock plugins with great confidence.It's not the plugins or software alone that produce outstanding mixes; it's always your discerning ear, knowledge, skillset, and accumulated experience that truly create exceptional sound. Bob Clearmountain, who said: "It's not the gear that makes the mix; it's the ears." Andrew Scheps, stated: "The software is just a tool. The engineer is the artist." Take these pieces of advice to your heart!

I like what Dave Pensado said I'll paraphrase. I can teach you how to make something sound good but I can't teach you what sounds good. There really is a big component of Art in mixing once you have basic mastery over tools like compression and reverb.

It's a great argument for someone who doesn't have the basics: Compressor, Limiter, EQ, Reverb, etc. For someone who already has their favorite plugins available, I say, use whatever inspires you to make great music, and for a lot of people, that means using plugins that are tried and true FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL. I will continue to use my favorites, and you will continue to use yours. I believe people, like myself, use S1 not for its great plugins, but for its flawless workflow. I'm just a budding Producer, so what do I know.

Joe, thank you so much for this very sound argument about 3rd party plug-ins. I'm new to the DAW game and I just bought Studio One 6.5 Artist. I needed to know what plug-ins come with Studio One and I needed to make a decision about some 3rd party plug-ins that were "on sale". Your coverage gave me both the information and the understanding I needed to make the decision. No, I'm not buying the "great deal" plug-in package.

I use Studio One, so I do have my bias. But that said, I think there is a lot of equipment gate keeping in the music mixing and production world. But then some times we see a "famous" artist show that they did something with a tool that is cheap or free and all of the sudden it's the new best tool of all. At the end of the day if the song sounds good, it doesn't matter what you used to achieve it.

Proof to myself is that I'm now going back ten years and remixing stuff I recorded then using new knowledge and discoveries within Studio One.... I thought I was pretty hot stuff with what I was doing back then but now its like being supercharged!! I find that the tracks were probably OK back then but if not mixed properly can sound like crap. It's like playing bass anyone can pick it up and start playing something, but it takes years, if ever to become the level of Victor Whotten or Marcus Miller. I find that limitations are with me not the hardware software, keep pushing forwards....Thanks

What I am having trouble with however is when a song is moved into Project and compressed to a stereo MP3 or WAV file, the result has more presence in the bass frequencies than it does in the original track recorded in Studio One. Is this something you may have noticed as well? Or, is it just my imagination? Would like to hear your experience with the Projects mastering side of Studio One and if it colors the finished product different from the recordings. Honestly, he would have been better off going to the practice range, or getting some lesson from a pro, his equipment was already top of the range, I guess it was easier just to buy new equipment. therein lies the rub, its often-easier (or appears easier) just to pull out our credit card and buy a 'promise' or a 'dream' - anyway great video Joe, I think it will be a very long time before I hit the ceiling on my Studio one 6.

Serious question, do (Presonus or any DAW) stockplugins use actual VST or AU programming protocols or can they be more optimised towards the DAW because they have the possibility to be programmed at host software level and they can neglect VST compatibility. Is that a benefit for let’s say cpu usage, latency or audio performance?

Yeah, pretty much agree. But some plugins are real purdy (Fabfilter, for instance) and others are just so familiar from repeated use that they're convenient. Having said that, I use about 20% of all the plugins I've bought over the years. The rest just aren't necessary. And having said *that*, I wouldn't be very bothered if I had to use only St One stock plugins for my next mix, even though I'm just getting into St One now. They work, right?

I agree. I've tried to limit myself to stock plugs many times and it mostly worked. I missed dynamic eq and de-esser, version 6 solved that problem. Still I miss better/sexier reverb, a delay, I love analog delay, just sometimes want more. Also a great limiter, saturator and some audio repair tools are on my wishlist from PreSonus to fill the gap. Ampire is also not my cup of tea. Other than that, mostly it is about habits I guess. OK, Waves MV2 and RBass, RVox make life easier as well. Probably forgot some things too, but overall very good point - don't buy anything if it is not crucial and needed for your workflow.

Excellent Advice as always ! Mosty do get by mixing with Studio One Stock plugs. I keep it sparse but have found some unique 3rd party utility plugs that make quick work of things in a pinch like: DrumsSSX, Vocal Rider and De-noise Pro VX . I do own two 3rd party reverbs that I got very comfortable with but the new Open Air 2 IR reverbs are absolutely stunning. I find meself using these more and more recently and getting desired results faster. The ST 1 manual is excellent but it lack's a little in the area of covering (in depth) all the Plug's that are available in "Fat Channel" (think the older manual prior to Ver. 6 might have covered more) would have been (would be) nice to have a dedicated "FAT CHANNEL" section in the current manual that deep dives into all the plug's and parameters. I've used Studio one for the last 5 years and it took some time but I practiced and researched how to use and get the most out of the Stock plug's I grab for most often and though I tested & tried a lot of 3rd party plugs ; I usually find studio one has the same emulation's or in the rare case it doesn't it will be added to Studio One + eventually. Then there is "Splitter" & "Macro Controls" (with pads) for anything else I (or anyone) can dream up..I re-call buying a stereo Imaging plug for a project and 2 months later studio one introduced Binaural and dual pan lol , luckily it wasn't an expensive plug. Using a side-chain in Studio One's EQ 2 you can get a dual channel view for masking and now it's dynamic. I'm glad I never bought Fabfilter. Having a few 3rd Party plugs to increase work-flow or for creative sparkle makes sense but for me it takes dedicated time to learn them, dedicated hours of listening and adjusting to integrate them onto the mixing Pallet..Depends how you like to create and what method produces more completed songs and mixes I suppose ? Some people work better with a lot of mediums and options some like myself like to keep it simple. My favorite resource for learning and new ideas are Joe Gilders channels ! Cheers Joe...

Hey, Joe, referencing @ 2:41, I *am* deaf in one ear, but that should only be temporary once I get to the doc and get a tube in there, hopefully next week. Then back to great mixes with mostly stock plugins...and as few plugins as I can force myself to limit myself to. 🤓

This video was exceptionally well done. Buying a bigger engine for your race car will not make you a driver. I know many mixers and managers that only use the S1 stuff 98%. They have just one or two 3rd party toys. It works and they sound great. Don't throw you money at a problem. Instead throw your time allocation in your life to learn how to use what you got.

Studio one is great I just wish that for professional users we get a better version of console shaper with output trim, and some more fat channel. I am also thinking about reducing my plugins and use mostly presonus plugins.

I'm 100% software. I've had Studio One 2-1/2 yrs. and Sphere for 2/3 of it. I've bought a few plugins and never use them after first couple tries. My Presonus plugins make my music sound better, so that's what I keep dragging into the channels.

I have actually done mixes to show people that the stock plugins on most Daws are all you need in most cases. Studio One Stock Plugins are the Bomb no Doubt about it! I use UA Plugins mainly not because of name recognition but Saving DSP from main CPU on Host System as I mix huge projects with Strings etc. and they can run sometimes upward to 100 tracks or more actual wave audio tracks and is a little more demanding than Midi from what I noticed. Between UAD and the external DSP boxes and Waves with the Soundgrid system that I am totally not a fan of, but it does work, but waves hardware if clunky and the UA DSP is a Nice Dream. The sound difference of the plugins really doesn't matter to much as they all sound a little different because Real Hardware is different from unit to unit. But the Character difference is so minute it is almost laughable when people try to do a shoot out of which one is better. It's all marketing to a point. Heck my favorite plugins are from Fuse, Black Rooster Audio and Neold. But ever since I took the plunge into UAD Stuff, that's about all I use with the exception of the Abbey Road stuff that Waves have.

It's funny to see how much of a blind spot electronic music production is for Presonous guys, even thoughas far as DAW functionality goes, S1 is the best tool for me to produce Electronic music. But Joe starts the video "can you actually get great sounding mixes with stock S1 plugins". Yes, the answer to this question is a resounding Yes. I've given up my PA subscription and I'm considering giving up my UAD subscription. But if instead of "can you get great sounding mixes with S1 plugins" the question would be "can you comfortably produce any type of music with stock S1 plugins" then the conversation would go in a different direction :)

Yes - Studio One have great plugins... However, I can't seem to find a match in terms of features, customizations and efficiency to FabFilter Pro-Q3, L2, C2, Saturn 2 and Pro-R. (not advertising them) Pro-Q3 has Mid/Side cuts/boosts, Left/Right, Stereo Bands all within the same instance and more CPU friendly than native plugin. Not a must have but definitely the best addition anyone can make. Also for some reason when using Mixtool, MS Transform process audio differently and sounds different in a weird way.

I mean, yes ultimately true. I'm a S1 fan and with the latest version it is now my only DAW. However, I like to have different sound and different plugin give me that. I mean, it is false to say stock plugin sounds bad, it is just not real. If buying a plugin is because supposedly stocks one sound bad, then it shows there is somethings to work on. But, if you buy a plugin after having testing it, and you live the sound of it and you feel more inspired by it, then why not? Ultimately, plugin aren't just sound. I love the ssl Brainworx interface and the sound. I never get something like that inside studio one (at least for now) within one single plugin.

Sometimes "plug-ins" is used to refer to effects rather than instruments. And I know you are mainly in the live recording biz so if you are referring to just the effects I would agree. I cant really tell the diff between stock and most 3rd party basic effects and eq, even compressors. On the instrument side though I feel the 3rd party products covering sampled or modelled instruments are really significantly better than the stock instruments. I like Impact a lot for basic electronic stuff but the acoustic samples are not on par with, eg., Addictive Drums 2. And as someone who is primarily a piano player I have never found a usable piano in Presence. If I were advising someone just starting or working w a tight budget I would totally recommend Studio One but also suggest saving up for a decent piano vst.

I record solo piano and I can't get a reverb that I like with the stock plug-ins. I keep tweaking them but they all seem to change the sound instead of just adding reverb. I'm also a piano tuner so maybe I'm just extra sensitive to how it sounds.

Honestly I stand somewhere in between. The stock limiter eats dirt... It's flat and just bad really. So when you said you bought few extra plugins, I almost knew limiter would be one of them. Other than that, S1 is just missing a barebones, simple but !!! oversampled !!! hard/soft clipper. The two stock plugins I reach for the most are EQ and compressor. Both delays are great and reverb is superb. Also, MixTool could use infinite volume. I think it goes just to -/+ 24dB ? Why not complete silence? I have to use third party plugin for that too.

He’s right! However! Although I Love S1! It’s limited with the Synths it has like Mai tai is ok..but it’s limited..not to mention Presence..can’t even design your sound. Other Daws have multiple instruments like Fl…so that’s one thing I wish S1 would add more synths or pianos

First off, I'm one of Joe's members, and like his teaching. The 3 "plugins" he said he bought, one of them to me is not a "plugin", it's a s/w program----EZDrummer, of which I have. I do not use any of the MIDI or EDM type stuff in S1. I have a number of 3rd party plugins, but am starting to wean myself away from some vendors, like WAVES. But in my estimation, in only doing this about 4 yrs, I do not think that there are an S1 plugins that could compete with Eventide Split EQ, and a number of Brainworx products, OR Izotope, for which I use Ozone 10 Advanced when I master, along with their Tonal Balance Control--a must for my mastering, and Waves WLM for LUFS stuff. Others are RM Pro, and several ADPTR plugins, as their Metric A/B is a phenom plugin.

nice touch....particularly liked towards the end of the clip...'just write better songs and produce better music''....that's the aim of the game for most likely all of us....the one thing i appreciate on my own music is that it's gotten better by virtue of lifting my game ...rather than plugins........doesn't mean that it's good, just that it's better.

Hi Studio One version 6.5 shows on Apple M2 laptops a blocked Presonus VST3 Shell, it means that external VST 3 plugins are ignored. Contacting the support team for weeks, the only solution we got to recover the use of VST3plugins, was do downgrade to version 6.1. Is any programmer checking the 6.5 code, in order to recover the use of Kontakt 7 or VEP 7 VST3 in Studio One?

Nice video, and I'm thinking you're right. At this moment I'm at the point to buy a new DAW computer. And yes, I made a list of all (most of them free) non-Presonus plugins, which I installed over the years. Do I use them a lot, no, not really. Why did I installed those plug-ins? Well, you see video's on KZfaq, install a free version to see what it can do, listen to it, whatever. So, the only plugin I bought was Superior Drummer 3 and some libraries for SD3. I just have a small, non calibrated home studio. Studio One Pro 6.5, StudioLive 64S and a NSB32.16 (Yep 64 input's, I don't like to patch my synths etc) and my beloved Mackie's HR824 MK1. BTW I just became 60 years old. So Can I hear the difference between the FabFilter Pro-Q 3 and the stock Presonus Pro EQ3? No, I can't anymore, not only because of my age, but also the listening environment. And yes, do I understand that there are plugins which are prefereable above S1 plugins? absolutely, If you are a producer, mixing engineer, in a well suited, calibrated professional studio, maybe with al lot of out board gear, and a top of the bill monitoring solution, yes, why not? But. If I had the possibillity to build a top notch calibrated (home) studio, with the best monitors I could buy, should I need third party plugins in S1? I don't think so. I think, it's just the musical, engineering, mixing and producer's level where you are, to use those plugins and get the max out of them. Yep, I installed iZotope, long time ago in S1. Try to master, Lot's of presets, sounds really good, saved the project, listening back the next day, hmmm, to "bumby", to much compression etc. etc. So, the stock plugins in S1, like reverb, chorus, delay, flanger, compression, limiting etc etc, they are, for me, perfect! I's the knowledge about the outboard gear, or plugins to create a great mix or master. So Joe, with my new DAW, I'm starting from scratch, only S1 plugins, and ok, SD3.

I agree with you Joe but unfortunately just recently I had to completely stop using studio one (the latest version of course) because even when I use only the stock plugins the DAW would crash and the auto save would not restore my project properly. I run a Mac Mini M2 with 32 gig of ram so I have plenty of horsepower and I have been in touch with support and have read many posts but I cant seem to get this worked out. I absolutely love Studio One over every other DAW I own but because of the plugin crash issue, stock or third party, it's not useable.

I wonder if there are some issues with the native Apple Silicon build specifically, because I too have issues with instability, on a well-speced M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Maybe not as bad as your situation - I still get stuff done. But those crashes are unsettling nonetheless. It’s ironic, because I switched from Cubase Pro 12 last year because Cubase made my newly bought ARA plugins literally unusable, like I couldn't even use the UI. (Either that, or SynchroArts don’t test their products properly in Cubase).
