The Turks won this battle, but they have lost the war. However, without this delay, the Russian would march on the capital of Constantinople within mere days and probably end the Ottoman Empire. Although the declining Ottoman Empire was by this time often regarded as "the sick man of Europe", the Ottoman Army's five-month-long resistance against a much larger army earned a degree of admiration, which may have contributed to the unsympathetic treatment of the Russian Empire at the Congress of Berlin. Most battles confirm the way that things are going already; Plevna is one of the few engagements which changed the course of history. It is difficult to see how the Ottoman Empire could have survived in Europe...if the Russians had reached Constantinople in July; probably it would have collapsed in Asia as well. Plevna...gave the Ottoman Empire another forty years of life. The siege of Plevna also signalled the introduction of the repeating rifle into European warfare. The Russian and Turkish armies were each using two types of infantry rifle at Plevna. Russian troops were largely armed with the old M1869 Krnka, a single shot lifting breech block conversion of the muzzle loading M1857 rifled musket. It was soundly outperformed by the more modern single shot Turkish Peabody-Martini rifles. At the time, the Russian army was in process of reequipping with the more modern, but still single shot, Berdan rifle. It became clear at Plevna that this was already obsolete while being introduced, outclassed by the Turkish Winchester repeaters. Reports of the heavy losses suffered by the Russian army at the hands of the Turks at Plevna forced armies across Europe to begin the process of either reequipping with repeating rifles or finding a way to convert their existing single-shot rifles into magazine-fed weapons. And it was this battle that set the style of next wars, which is frontline warfare, especially in WW1.
@presidentlouis-napoleonbon88893 жыл бұрын
I thought they were predominantly armed with Berdan at the start of the war. Were the Russian modernization still incomplete?

@emosh73 I mean, as a Turk, I'm just glad we were able to hold on to this land, namely Anatolia, in which we are living for like 9 centuries :D And who knows what would happen to history in a scenario where the Ottoman Empire fell and collapsed at the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878? That is the exact thing that makes the Siege of Plevna so important. I mean think about it: With an Ottoman fall, they are non-existent in WW1 (maybe there isn't even a World War), so there is no need for a battle of Gallipoli, the Russian Empire is getting all the help from its allies, France and Britain. With these aids, they are successful against the Austria-Hungary and Germany, therefore there isn't a communist revolt. As for today, a Russian controlled straits would mean one big, important thing: The Mediterranean turning into a Russian playground. They are even trying today in Syria and Libya, and NATO allies, such as Turkey, is trying to fight against it (so far seemingly successfully). That is why NATO is so supportive of Turkey in its foreign military interventions. And some other NATO allies such as France thinks that in this new, modern era, Russians are not France's enemies. Not anymore. They think the real threat lies in the Southeast. All these and countries' their own national interests merge and create a diplomatic mess :D Sorry, got a little bit carried in the end.

@emosh73 Meeh, I mean I don't care about religion at all. In 50-100 years, most of the people will realise that their ancestors were worshipping to some nonsensical fairy tales. This is the dictate of evolution. It has always been so in our history. Too bad I probably won't be around to see how the newer generations will react to those who are religious. They will see the religion-followers like they have some sort of mental illness.

@@emircanayyldz7814 im an Algerian born living in Canada, trust me, there would be no country called Turkey today if it wasn’t for the religion of Islam, this deen gave turks honor and dignity, the good ethics of war that the turks would do and get admiration from the west for, is from the religion of Allah, without Islam there is no Ertugrul Gazi, no Osman Gazi and, no Mehmet Fatih, and no AbdulHamid 2. I don’t understand how some turkish people talk like that about religion, i mean without islam this country wouldn’t even exist, the conquest of Constantinople (istanbul) was predicted by Prophet Muhammad saws in one of his hadiths. Anyways you might not believe this is your choice and we respect it, but at least have some respect for those who believe and be grateful that muslims died for your country. Salam wa’laykum.

@Hakan U. From the looks of it, there is NO cover, what do you expect, go down to the ground, shrapnel shots come from above, Scatter, that would break the order of the army and one good attack in the Russian lines could route the army all toghether

I just rely on personal communication and history... If you were the way the European community describes you, then we would not have history and monuments in Russia . Monuments not only represent an event , but also remind you at what price it was achieved. Every country has its ups and downs... It will be fun to see if the Ottoman Empire is reborn and bypassing the Russian borders, goes straight to Europe. Then I would have laughed)
