Also only in the USA version. During the scene where Gaira about to attack the people on the mountain, you can hear one of them say "Oh no Godzilla".

I haven't seen the UPA cut in a while, but I did recently watch the International dub of the Japanese cut when it was airing on TV. I was disappointed with how boring it was, I remembered the movie being a lot more lively, but now that I know how much was changed for the UPA version I might go back and give that another watch. Nothing can fix how much of a charisma vacuum Russ Tamblyn is, though.

This is the one where it's hard to choose from, the original Japanese version has the original music, but in the US version, the final battle plays the Akira Ifukube soundtrack from Godzilla: Invasion of the Astro Monster, which was overall my favorite part of the film.

Honestly, it is a very surreal experience seeing the two versions side by side. Someone once said that it's like UPA did a George Lucas Special Edition with Tamblyn in some of the scenes; like they CGI-ed him into the frame. I know that's not what they did, but if I didn't know that CGI didn't exist then, I would think that.

I prefer the American Cut due to the added sound effect of Gargantuan feet hitting the ground. In all the shots of both Kaiju, we get that great reverberating effect. In the Japanese version, not all scenes feature this sound. The downside to the American Cut, the musical changes done to Ifukube's score. The Japanese Cut appears to have better color, but there could be some brightness added to the transfer. I will have to get both versions on BluRay.

It's also been said that 1) Tamblyn didn't like the dialogue he was given, so he ad-libbed a lot, and 2) the scene where a boulder hits Sandas' knee was really an accident and not something that was planned. Regardless, I've watched this movie over and over without ever getting bored of it.

I think Honda and Sapperstien had two movies in mind and in a very unusual move figured out a way to do that in the same shoot. I feel that they would have had to have the reshoots for the USA release happen during production judging by the camera set-ups and continuity. They must have made the USA version adjustments during the scripting process then shot both versions of the same scenes with two different versions on the same day. I can only speculate ...

Awesome work although l can’t prove it but U.S television prints used to open up with gargantua-octopus boat sequence then the abruptly cut to the U.P.A logo then the stormy sea war of the gargantua title credits. The film’s music has always been a toss up with fans as with ‘King Kong vs.Godzilla’ the American versions library music can be heard in the finale of the low budgeted “blood waters of Dr. Z” Aka: Zatz. That spitting out of the woman’s clothes by the green gargantua was always a bit disturbing as a kid (never could understand why there was second shot of some gooey flowers) great video! so what’s next? “The Mysterians”? , “Atragon”? , “Half human”? I’m sure whatever you do will be done well and thoroughly.

The main difference I noticed is the "Frakensteins" in the Japanese version seemed to bave similar fur coloring whereas in the American version the Gargantuas are clearly brown and green! For years the subway scene baffled me where, after seeing a Gargantua standing near an exit, Emiko started to walk up the stairs before the doctor told her " That's the Green One!" You can see his legs were green so how could she be confused? Once I did the ol' "back and forth" between the two versions, the mystery was solved. Another difference that Iliked were the differentces in the soundtracks. The military suite in the American version was more intense and it was exciting to see them on the verge of killing the Green One ( " They're finally going to win this time!)

I have no idea why Frontier dubbed Tamblyn with another actor for their International Dub version. But I can only suspect that Toho only shipped them the M&E tracks with the print they gave them. I also thought that perhaps that's what happened to the UPA version, but that doesn't explain the other scenes.

Actually, Frontier didn't dub the first English version. It was dubbed in Hong Kong by the same people who did the Godzilla films of the 1970s.

What about giant footstep sounds of the gargantuas walking and running around? Or lack of using those sounds and the audio differences if any within both versions? Because every giant monster movie definitely needs lots of thunderously frightening giant footstep sounds. First far away barely noticable, then ominously getting closer and closer while crashing louder and louder. Shown mostly but not only from the helpless perspectives of the terrified humans under attack. Something vital thats absent or very lacking from giant monster movies?!

this was one of my favorite monster movies and still is today . me and my friends saw it a t the movies in 1971 for 75 cents ,i was 8 years old .i remember how how funny it was for me and my friends, we would laugh at how Russ Tamblyn's voice was so clam and worry free amongst all the chaos and destruction going on in the film. we would also laugh at how the green one ran ,saying " he runs like a girl" .this really brings back memories . im not sure which movie is the one with Russ Tamblyn's original voice in it ? and if its available on dvd .

This a has been a recent thought of mine, but maybe creating Sanda wasn't needed. He has basically the same backstory as Frankenstein, a similar enough personality and the more popular Gargantua is Gaira anyway. So they could have doubled down on War of the Gargantuas being a sequel by using Frankenstein in Sanda's role and instead of creating Akemi and Paul Stewart reuse Sueko and James Bowen. Or if Sanda needed to be created Ishiro Honda could have commited to making this a standalone like he wanted to, giving Sanda and Gaira different origins, like them being types of giant apes or both being experiments created by humans to do a nature vs nuture experiment (as soon as he's born Gaira is left in the wild while Sanda is chosen to be the one raised with love and kindness by humans) What sounds like a better direction?

Agreed, a majority of the time I want to watch the original language with subtitles but whenever there's an American lead speaking English then I prefer the dub (even if Tamblyn is terrible). My only complaint of the American version is omitting the names Sanda and Gaira and also replacing Akira Ifukube's Operation L with Philip Green's Terror Hunt.
