The WRONG Way to Throw the “Check Hook”

I learned about the “Check Hook” a long time ago, but I missed the most crucial step: the proper #footwork. It wasn’t until Coach Thom Whillock of Norwegian Combat Academy showed me the proper way to throw this lead hook variation, that I understood the importance of stepping off center-line. This video will breakdown how to throw the punch, when to use it while fighting backwards, and how #boxing’s greats used it with much success... and also took advantage of their opponents’ improper technique.

That's exactly what they teach us in Russia. Trainers also give a tip to think about this side movement as about a drop rather than a step. Helps to get right feeling and improve speed

And that the punch should land at the same time as you finish your step, and dont exaggarate the movement or youre gonna be left off-balance.

Yeah, that's the Cuban/Soviet style of check hook. I've been throwing it without the step for years until my trainer told me to do it that way. since then I get caught a lot less with the step than without it in sparring. Good video!

This is exactly what my coach and Tom Yankello teach on throwing the check hook. Joe Louis also throw his check hook this way. Golden knowledge here ladies and gents.

I should point out that it's ok not to take a step out with the check hook. Keep in mind that many fighters still check hook without the step. It's not nescessarily wrong to do. Whittaker was doing it a lot against gastelum. You can see it used a lot from elite boxers like mayweather. The reality is that you can hit using both pivot styles. Aldo uses a step with his pivot and ive seen him get hit with it. Likewise ive seen people get hit using the check hook without the pivot. This is a movement that requires good timing and precision. The step helps open up your pivot angle wider but if you dont step, the pivot angle is not as wide. Never the less, you still move the head away using either method. The big difference is that taking a step out is one more sequence you have to do, meaning it gonna be harder to time since you have to do the step. Without the step, you can just fire right away with better timing. Theres pros and cons to both ways. Neither is invalid and both have their downsides. I wouldnt quite say either is wrong to do. It's a rahter rigid way of looking at things. It's more useful to provide insight to different ways instead. My word of advice to people here is not to tell someone at the gym that theyre check hooking incorrectly. Just understand that different methods exist.

Borschev just scored an excellent hook KO to your point just moments ago on the Contender Series. Faded back by stepping his rear leg back and evaded his opponent's jab (from southpaw), then countered with the hook and exited by pivoting.

If you fight with very aggressive opponent this is a must. I also love to make step in with a jab to provoke the opponent, then quickly step back with a cross and then get out with this pivot check hook. Effective and also very fun to do

Hey Shane, great video! This was always one of the techniques that intrigued me the most! Would you advise this same way in muay thai or other rulesets with low kicks? Most of the time, I've this russian/cuban step in boxing and the way I see it in muay that is a step 45 towards the left but less pivot on the front knee, so that the outer thigh isn't as exposed
