Super Cycling Energy in a Bottle? Cino Cinelli's Bicycle Race Winning Super Drink: Does it Work?

Rich and I test out a formula used by the great Cino Cinelli to win bike races back in the 1930's and '40's. Cino claimed it made the difference in the final leg of a race. Did it work for us?

How fun! Like time travel to ride with Cino himself. As a ‘70s kid in upstate NY, the bikes by this local builder, Ben, were popular with racers. In 2000, I finally acquired a childhood dreambike, a ‘99 Legend Ti, so your video was especially fun for me shot with your beautiful Serottas. Thank you!

Joe loves his Legend and I think it was made right around the same time as yours. At times, I do have some regrets going with a steel Serotta, as the legend is much lighter. :)

I’m glad you both survived! I quit drinking coffee about three years ago and think a dose of caffeine that high would do me in. Very interesting and entertaining as always. I really appreciate your creativity in developing content. I would still be interested in seeing what kind of tools/food etc you bring on rides and if it varies between bikes and trikes.

It's always fun to try and relive a bit of history, Gary! I have no idea how Cino would've drank this stuff throughout the course of a hard-driving race! I guess you have to really be motivated to win. :)

Great video! I like that you guys tried something from so long ago. Obviously people, racers anyway, have been searching for an advantage forever. I also really liked the John Wayne western theme sounding song! Cool bikes by the way.

Interesting ride and data. The sugar and espresso really got you guys jacked up. “legal doping” for a couple of old timers. I think I’ll skip trying that combo. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think I'll be trying it again, either. Maybe one lemon, one cup of espresso and some sugar, but I still think I prefer water while riding.

Great fun, as always .The requisite 1 ounce of extra virgin olive oil consumed prior to the "elixir" would reduce the insulin resistance of all the sugar. Food Wishes has a great State Fair Lemonade recipe. I would use that and add the espresso.

So now I have to do it again and drink the olive oil first? We'll that ain't gonna happen, Evan! This stuff is hard enough to swallow as it is- I'd hate to try it on an ounce of olive oil! :) I'll have to try backing this off to an espresso flavored lemonade. I'm sure it won't work as well on the bike, but it'll be a heck of a lot more enjoyable to drink!

@bikestrikesrazors Try Chef John's State Fair Lemonade recipe. Time-consuming but the taste is spectacular, your "elixir" will be more palatable.

Hey, Frank! I'll bring a bottle of this stuff for you on the next vintage ride! Just kidding...I wouldn't do that to you. :) You drink enough of this stuff and I guarantee you'll get sick to your stomach at some point!

So if I combine Cino cinellis drink mix with Graham Obrees marmalade sandwiches I reckon the hour record could be mine for the taking!! 😆...in the next video could you try Fausto Coppis La bomba?promise i won't tell the UCI....or the feds 😉

Ha! We could try the marmalade sandwiches with Cino's drink, but I'll leave the "La Bomba" to braver souls. I was concerned enough about drinking this stuff. :)

Hey guys !! I'm a big fan of sweet lemonade and coffee just not together. However However it cant be much worse than some of the energy drinks that are out there

Hey, Douglas! As hard as this was to swallow, I think you’re right. I’ve had some energy drinks that were worse tasting than this stuff. :)
