HI Folks! 😊😍
Should YOU BUY DR Ph. Martin's HYDRUS watercolors?
Today I'm painting a dolphin with Dr.Ph. Martin's HYDRUS liquid watercolor paints as well as doing a bit of a REVIEW so I can give my honest opinion on them and let you decide whether or not you want to BUY them! I've had these liquid watercolor paints in my art supplies for quite some time and not had the chance to do a painting with them yet so now is the time!
Today I give my verdict on this range of liquid watercolour paints and mention the things I like and a few things I don't like as well as some advantages and disadvantages to these liquid watercolors.
Thank you for helping me reach 100 subscribers! You all mean so some and your support really helps to motivate me and keep me going. Don't forget, if there's something you would like to see me paint, draw or review on this channel- please let me know in the comments section! 😊🎨😊

Hi, what a beautiful dolphin you painted!!! And you have a very soothing voice.. I do have a wuwation about the paints... I have a set of them also and I have an issue with the pigment or binder, not sure which one, sticking to the sides or bottoms of the bottles, depending on how I leave them. Right now I have some stuck to both the side and the bottom of every bottle and no amount of shaking will get it all to come loose. I was wondering if you have encountered this issue? Thanks again for sharing this video. Blessings from your New fan and subscriber in North Carolina, Stacy

Hi! Thank you for subscribing and leaving a lovely comment! The issue you have sounds similar to the first batch I received- I bought them initially from Amazon in the UK. I don't know when you bought yours? Maybe you could send an e mail asking Dr. Ph Martins about the batch you have and see if they can shed any light on the issue? There were really helpful when I contacted them? Hope this helps. Sarah 😊

The Art Hive Thank you so much. I bought them a little over a year ago, at Amazon in the US. I will send an email and see what they say. I haven't used them much because I just assumed it was a property of the brand until I seen this video. You have been a HUGE help, thank you.

Thanks to the heads up, I’ve ordered from Jacksons and Dr Martin and have asked them to check them before shipping them to me as I’m in Australia and it will be really inconvenient if they are faulty. Fingers crossed.

Hi Corrie! If you mean the Dr.Ph Martins Radiance range, no I haven't had the chance to try them. They are really expensive and difficult to get hold of here in the UK but I am keeping my eyes open as I would love to try them! 😊 I think they are dye based compared with the more lightfast and pigment based Hydrus range but they are supposed to be super vibrant.

Such a lovely painting Sarah! I was so excited about these liquid watercolours, as I am a multimedia watercolourist and have need for deeper colours like Ultramarine Blue or Phthalo Green to have shimmer and had planned on adding just a bit of Winsor and Newton's Iridescent Medium to get that affect. However, before I invested in these rather expensive liquid watercolours, I checked with my art tutor and quite well known British mixed media watercolour artist and tutor of over 20 years, Alison C. Board, and sadly she told me that these are in fact NOT lightfast! This is a complete game changer for me as I sell my original watercolours. I thought you might like to know this even though it doesn't affect you personally, it might those of your followers who also sell their original watercolour art. Thanks for a great review! xx

Hello Sarah and Linda! Thank you both for your input and comments. I’m wondering if perhaps there’s ANY chance that your art tutor may have been thinking about the “Radiant” watercolor line that PH Martin’s also makes? It’s become rather more popular (at least in the US) as the colors are apparently crazy bright and transparent. However, they are dye-based “watercolors” (I’ve never understood WHY the company named them both “liquid watercolors” in the first place), and are EXTREMELY fugitive in nature. I purchased my Hydrus paints several years ago now, and at the time they were quite a bit more expensive than the Radiant line. Now it’s the other way around; while the “sets” in the Radiant collection have 14 bottles each, they are smaller, by half, than the one-ounce Hydrus paints you’ve used, Sarah. I don’t tend to do much digital work, and prefer my paints to be high in lightfastness (and low in number of pigments!) so I haven’t sought out the four or five sets of Radiant Concentrated Watercolors. That said, I *do* own the 36 Hydrus colors, and have for several years now. I really WANT to use them more; I have the smaller sized bottles (made of plastic, and half the size as the glass jars), and after some five years, only a few of the colors from the first set are showing any signs of use. I suppose that’s a good thing...they DO seem to last a while, in a box within a dark closet, at least! 😂 Sarah, your painting is lovely. I found your channel via KZfaq, as I’ve been having buyer’s remorse of late and am trying to convince myself that these are far better than any of my tube paints...most of which I use dried and in pans. While I very much love the idea of being able to mete and measure EXACTLY how much pigment I’ve used in a custom mixture, or even the prospect of wasting so little on each painting, I find them terribly cumbersome from a space standpoint. Yes, I may only need one drop of a few colors, but then I need ample mixing space...not only for those colors, but additional space just to reach a reasonable transparency per each individual pigment as well. Do you find yourself using these much? If so, I wonder if you have any palette recommendations? I’ve tried some with little plastic pots (they do seal, but they don’t allow for storage of many colors) and have found that even the open-well palettes with an “airtight seal” either DON’T, or at best are unable to keep the paints from mingling with their neighbors. With kids and a very curious cat, I simply don’t have time to allow them to dry on ANY palette before SOMEONE finds them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work, Sarah. And Linda, please do reply if you think perhaps your tutor was thinking about the other line of dye-based paints? If not, that would definitely be the final straw on these paints for me for sure! Thanks again to you both. 😊

Your tutor may have been thinking of the Radiant line of watercolours that are dyes instead of pigments (not lightfast). I have been using the Hydrus line (pigments) for over a year now and I have been loving them as much as my traditional Daniel Smith and Schmincke watercolours!

@@DanniGeee it is entirely possible that she was thinking of the Radiant dye based “watercolor”. It was a year ago, so I can’t be sure of the exact conversation, but it certainly would make sense. So very sorry that I did not see the notice of your comment 1 year ago. Hope you have worked out your issues with the Hydrus liquid watercolors. :))

Hi! Do you prefer these to normal water colours? And can you blend them into each other well to create new colours? Thanks so much 😀

Hi Abigail! I like both! These are super concentrated and I like the fact that they claim to be light fast. They do mix and blend into each other really well too but I still like regular watercolours as they have more texture and are easier to take with you out and about if you are someone who likes painting out doors 😊😍

The Art Hive thank you! I’ve just ordered a few so I’ll see how they go. I’ll have to experiment in cold and hot pressed paper! Your picture using them looks fab. I am looking for a more translucent look to my pictures so I’m hoping this will be the answer! X

These paints seem more of an illustrator's tool than something for painters as such. I have a question about your Betty Hayways brushes. In the video you are using a smaller brush (looks like 3 or 5) for part of the dolphin demo, and I wondered whether the smaller brushes of this series are springy and keep a good pointed tip. My question applies to 0, 1, 3, 5 only, as I don't use large brushes.

Hi! The brushes I used for this demo are Daler Rowney Aquafine round brushes. (I don't have any Betty Hayways brushes unfortunately!) The smallest I have is a size 4 and they keep their shape well. Hope this helps 😊

How was the masking fluid put on? It looked like a kind of pen or pencil, and not a brush with a liquid bottle of the fluid.

i think sarah used a silicone shaper - when you use a brush the masking fluid is impossible to clean off so i think thats why she used this instead

I don't like them at all. I can't get them to blend or do any of the things you can with yours. I too feel I got a bad set. Michaels would not exchange them as I could not find my receipt. Very dissapointed even with a coupon. I thought it was me but have met a few people since with a similar experience. TYFS your opinion though 😊

It's a shame you (and others) have not had a good experience with these Hydrus watercolours - I did have a few bottles that I had issues with but I contacted Dr, Ph Martins directly and they arranged an exchange? I ordered mine online though but it might be worth getting in touch with them? Hope this helps 😊

Dr. Martins Hydrous Watercolors, at least in my experience, are horrible to use in an airbrush. Constant tip dry makes these watercolors impossible to do detailed illustrations. I've only been able to use these colors when creating large backgrounds with a full open spray and the compressor set at 35 psi. I welcome any airbrush professional's comments. I love these colors and this is so disappointing.
