My "Clip and Grow" Lemon tree bonsai has been growing all summer to gain strength and vigor, now it's time to prune it back to size.
This tree was grown from a seed many years ago and I am the third owner.

Mr. Saunders! I really enjoy watching you care for these plants, and explain the finer workings of it all. In my minor collection of bonsai viewing, I don't think I've seen anybody replace the moss that gets removed from the base of the tree. Why is that? Is it more beneficial after pruning to allow the moss to regrow on its own? Does the removed moss not take hold if placed back on? Hope all goes well.

20 years and still growing the primary branches... You have patience! Citrus trees tend to produce "erratic" overgrown branches. If you let the tree grow more before cutting back, you can choose one as new leader, for tape and trunk movement. Citrus roots easily, and the best way to get rid of the tap root from seed is ground-layering. You can get good radio roots in one season.

Hi Nigel, I have a pretty old potted lemon tree my late mother left with me that I'm interested in repotting for bonsai. I'm just not sure how viable it would be. It's pretty tall at around 40" with a thick lower trunk, potted in a conventional 15" plant pot. Do you think it would survive repotting and root trimming to a smaller and more shallow bonsai pot? If so what size pot would you recommend?

I love the look of your tree. I just purchased a lemon tree from a local garden centre. It looks pretty healthy and must have previously flowered because it currently has 16 tiny lemons developing (about the size of my pinky fingernail). Do you think there's any chance they will continue to develop? The branches don't look strong enough yet to support the weight of a lemon; so, I'm wondering if it's too young a plant? Maybe I should work on the roots and branch structure awhile before letting it grow lemons?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
The Lemons could definitely break the branches as they grow. Some people build a support under the lemon to prevent this. I'd enjoy the lemons this year and then work on growing the tree to get it strong. You can also thin the fruit on the tree to help too.

I’ve been wondering, I know some trees are indoor trees and some are outdoor trees, and seeing as how you’ve got lots of experience growing trees from a seed, could I begin an outdoor tree from a seed inside my house towards the end of winter and move it outside for good when spring hits or is it just best to wait until spring? Completely off topic from the video, I just watch your videos quite often and am aware of your ability to maintain a plant from a seed and just happened to be in the middle of watching this video when I started wondering
@TheBonsaiZone

hi, Nigel! i have citrus trees, too. i find them very sensitive to changes in light, particularly if you take them from inside to outside. i live in a similar region to you so my level of sunlight is about the same. do you do anything special to 'transition' your trees to the outdoor sun in the warmer weather?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
I bring mine from indoors into the greenhouse first. Most of the trees can do this transition well without any problems. Before I had the greenhouse, I would have to put them in the shade and slowly transition them to sun. This took almost a month.

Do you take any special care of your lemon tree compared to the other trees? Like a different soil mix or a different fertilizer? I had a really nice grafted kumquat tree and a few small lemon trees grown from seeds but no matter what I did sooner or later they all suddenly started losing leaves and died :(. No matter what soil/fertilizer/light conditions I provided.

I don't give the Citrus trees any special treatment, I do fertilize them every time I water and they get a dormant period in winter here, where they are at a cooler temperature. They don't like to dry out, especially on hot days, they are one of the first trees to start going limp.
