How to go full time in your lawn care business. In this video I suggest that Hunter raises his price to cut my lawn. Then he tells me that he's still working his crappy day job. Then he says he wants to quit his day job but he's afraid that he won't be able to make up for it with more lawn care clients.
So, after him raising my price, I bring him over to the whiteboard and do a simple math demonstration of how he can very easily leave his job and go full-time mowing lawns.

How much you need monthly to take care of yourself and family? When spring comes around, save everything and get your winter funds as soon as possible. When winter comes, try to have a job lined up even if you have your winter fund already. That's what I have done this year and it is working. Good luck! You can do it!!!

Always good to have a customer see your worth. This season I had to go up $5-$10 bucks per customer on gas and maintenance increases alone. One of my favorite customers before I even had the chance to mention said to me “ you know D with the gas prices and everything going up I’m going to pay you $25 more per cut” mind you she’s a weekly customer who was already paying $60 per week for a small front and medium size back yard. And not only does she pay $85 a week now but still tips me every time. She’s just a genuine good person and we keep in touch throughout the week. We’ve gotten so close she calls me her son now…brought her groceries when she was dealing with cancer. It’s a business but some customers you can’t help but love and enjoy being around. The people make the business that much more better.

I mow two yards a week on fridays and went full time. The other 6 days a week I'm installing edging, rock, mulch, cutting trees, leveling yards, pressure washing, and deck refinishing, and a shit ton of other things like house flips during the winter. I would love to mow non stop but let's be honest, the real money isn't to be found sitting on a mower all day. Don't be afraid of a little dirt, sweat, and hard ass work. Most guys around here that cut grass full time won't get their fat asses off the mower to even pick up a piece of trash. I hate laziness. Find out what you're best at and charge up the ass for it. Good luck.

100% right. I thought I'd be mowing lawns when I went full time this year. I haven't stopped landscaping since March. I cut two lawns weekly also. More money can be made doing the hard work as opposed to mowing, even though I'm trying to secure at least twenty lawns to have that guaranteed cash flow.

@@paulreints2279 I'm tearing down a 3 foot tall, 46 foot long, cinder block wall and footing so I can get into this condominium courtyard to level and reseed as I read your reply lol. Of course I'm doing it old school with a sledge, shovel, and wheel barrow. Here in Minnesota you're limited from April till about November on an average year so the more you can put away for winter the better. There's snow removal but that's always hit and miss. You don't want to depend on snow for income. It's amazing how much money I've made on landscape maintenance this year simply because the Customers' lawn service won't do it. I always get funny looks when we're there at the same time. That is if they make eye contact at all. Pure laziness.

This fall we're doing some selective tree cutting to open up their lake view. The cost seems to be no issue to these folks. That shrub and ornamental spray license was well worth the expense. There’s a motto that the British SAS use, “who dares wins”. It might be scary to make that leap but with proper planning it will pay off. I was crapping it when I first went on my own about bills, insurances , supporting family etc, but once I did it I’ve never looked back and are quite comfortable. This is partly due to Keith’s videos inspiring me. So if your not sure, listen to the guy.

It is a mind screw, im going through this and have been for about a year. Even though i know i make more in the few hours in the evening than an 8 hour day. I think alot of people get stuck in trying to be a good person or keep our bosses happy, especially if we feel any level of appreciation. I get myself connected to old men who have alot of medical problems and end up feeling bad for them but has been the most positive thing in my life. Just like he said, being open and honest is best if the person really cares and likes you then they will support your decisions even if theyre opposed in the beginning because of selfishness or needing you. Just make good choices and do a good job, alot of it falls in place it we just keep it moving and put in some real effort! LOVE THY NEIGHBOR!!!

I respect trades guys so much most of them are decent people and bust their ass to make money. What im seeing is alot of them need sales training 101 and some simple business management classes

Man I jumped. And the only reason I jumped is because I have listened to every single video Keith has put out. But you have to take his advice and do it. Go listen to Steve Harvey jump. Good stuff. I have been going strong in my company for two years full time now. Best feeling ever. Thanks man

$25 bucks a yard ,that's not making money . They need the service for being lazy to work on the heat ,a good start will be $50and up , that's what I charge , here in East tx , and customers pay what I ask for , or screw them . Grass's grows every day one inch . I use to low ball my business , and I had 72 customers , now that I opened my eyes I'm down to 57 customers , but I'm making more money and less work to my equipment.

Maybe I should've moved there instead of Oklahoma😆lol...my minimum up here is 35 and we're actually LESS dense than Texas, but at least I'm doing better than I was on the west coast, $25 yards and a few 20s

In order to grow, you need to raise your price. I know a guy that cuts grass 4 days a week with the same amount of yards 50 lawns and he makes $500 A DAY working SOLO with no trailer. Only a 30 inch Exmark with a sthil trimmer, and blower. Making $5,000 a month. This guy definitely needs to raise his price. He'll FOR SURE make enough to support himself.

I absolutely appreciate the content in this video. I'm a very situation as him just started my lawn care landscape business this year in March, and was able to go full time with it already. Just like him, I absolutely hated my day job so I had to "jump" per say....never looked back and absolutely loving it. I'm like him I do need to work on my route density as well. If anyone needs any motivation to do their own thing KZfaq search "Steve Harvey jump" that video was a life changer for me

Hey Kieth, I feel you may not respond and I know it is because you are busy but I have to chime in here. I have watched yours and Brian's pod cast and KZfaq videos. Something that is not talked about a lot is how to set yourself up for retirement in this industry. First let's talk about insurance for medical, dental and vision. How much does this cost for you as an individual? Not everyone has a spouse to support them on their insurance as it would kill their paycheck and so you need to pick up more jobs to make up for that missed money. Then, someone on here mentioned it about the down months (four to five here in N.C.). That means for 8 months a person would have to bust tail to make enough to get them through the down months. No body has put out a video explaining the break down on how the money made is broken down into payments for all items needed to live ie; insurance for business, medical, dental, and vision, taxes, and employee payment. After all this is taken out, what is left over for the business owner who is responsible for making sure equipment is running top notch and they are making their salary. Now that would be a video to tun in to. I bet your followers would skyrocket due to this is what stops most business owners from going all in. Just saying, you asked this young man why he is not quitting his job and going all in. I can speak from experience that after watching videos put out by you, Brian and Stanley "Dirt Monkey", you get stoked and ready to go out and bust it wide open, but then you start to think about everything I listed above. Did this young man think about all the items listed above when you asked him about talking to his boss? I will stop here, but wanted to answer your question as to what is stopping people from leaving their full-time jobs to be self-employed. Keep putting things like this out there please.

Keith, I re watched this video after I watched your recent scrub trimming video. Wow I remember what Hunter is saying. He is scared. Think back to a letter you received 3 1/2-4 years ago from a guy that a was scared about quitting his job and decided to go to Israel (the country) and I decided to quit my job finally. Also at GIE Stanly and me were talking with a group of people who were new to the landscaping business. I was sharing with this group what you are saying in the video. I did stress a book they needed to read. Your First Year in the Landscaping Business. You should read the book it is a pretty good book. And I think if you were at GIE you were hiding from me and you still owe me a big brother hug. Are you busy this weekend? You want to grab a bite to eat together? lol

Yes it’s easy to say about dropping your full time job. But this is how I look at it. Because I work full time. I have my business 24 years. What I’m getting at is you have to put x amount of money away for the winter. And you can’t forget health insurance. Most guys I know there wives are nurses so they have there health insurance. I’ve thought about it many times to go for it. But then I get stressed and think of what happens if we don’t get rain and then it’s a drought. Here in Pa I think it’s rolling the dice. My full time job is a cushion for me. I just make it work. I should have done it before I had a family.
