I’m not a huge “mess around with settings” type dude, but my footage always looks so slow so I gave your tips in this vid a whirl and hot damn, it made it so much better. Like way way better. Just wanted to say thanks for helping my slow ass look even alittle quick. You’re the man amigo.

Former 360 cam user here.... Was using the Insta360 One RS. I too reframed my footage and zoomed out a little more in post, really like how there were no warped edges but I didn't like the stretched, spaghetti look it was giving to my arms which you can kind of see in your video. I've seen other videos where it's much worse. But I'm back to using a single lens camera. As for ND filters, I think it's worth mentioning ND filters can interfere with image stabilization on some cameras, which is why I really like your tip on shooting later in the day to get more blur as using ND filters always added less image stabilization to may footage. Going to try that next.

Pretty cool ideas if you are seriously into video production or you want to exert the effort make that top notch production at level 3. The typical MTB rider that wants to record the ride is going to find it hard to continuously change settings, stopping before or on a ride interrupts the flow & can piss of a group ride. The Best all round & general solution at this point is probably using a good 360 degree camera which has ND (motion blur) functionality in the editing software (like the Insta360 suite), stay at Level 2 with everything included without having to futz around at level 3. Stress less, ride more. Stay safe!

Awesome vid Ryan. I personally like a rode lav mic mounted to a media mod equipped GoPro 11 pro tuned running at 5.3k and 24fps. Hyperview on a lower but optimal chest mount. Where it gets weird though is when you go around corners hour when you see the trees bend in the peripheral that’s kind of annoying.

If you cba to sort out the shutter speed and ND filters you can always just add the motion blur in post to the peripheral of the footage.

Another very effective way to add peripheral speed i discovered is to correct the distortion of the footage, usually the very wide FOV of action cam (not 360) distorts very heavily the images making things near the centre of the image to appear bigger: this makes the things ur passing by "move" less in the frame. Distortion corrected footage makes u feel like u are traveling more space in the same amount of time compared to non-corrected ones. Hope this can help!

Insta360 X3, wind muffs kit + stereo mode, and 36 or 25 fps. You're welcome. 🔥 I use the bike kit handlebar mount flipped upside down mounted as far outward as possible on my bar. Allows me to catch the backside of a jump or drop when I use driving mode split screen or catch somebody behind me as well to some extent. Yes mounting on top of my helmet would catch all that behind me even much better, but that's a terrible place for a camera.

Awesome vid and tips dude! Only problem is nd filters (or just a slower shutter speed in general) will reduce the effectiveness of image stabilisation so this only really works on gimbal stabilised footage which you showed some awesome examples of throughout the video I think and demonstrated why it can be a problem without a gimbal in the last gulley shot where everything was a bit shaky. It's a tricky balancing act when trying to introduce motion blur to electronically stabilised footage. Regardless, top video dude and keep sharing your wealth of knowledge! love your stuff!
@andrewnitu
@andrewnitu 4 ай бұрын
Completely agreed. If you’re on a smooth trail fine but on chunky stuff it gets super shaky and also induces ghosting (it tries to line up two frames with motion blur in different directions) Isaiah absolutely rips but the footage looks pretty shaky, might just be me. I think they would be better off doing the motion blur in post

I use a Telesin necklace mount, sometimes under handlebar near the fork mount, and I have also zap strapped the 360 cam like 2 feet out on my handle bar, reframe to look at myself, and it looks like a drone is flying next to me. Just for anyone lurking in the comments the insta 360 now allows you to adjust the side blur and increase the sense of speed. If you have a Gopro don't even bother with this stuff the fov and the software dont even come close to what an insta can achieve. Just sitting down vs standing up using a chest mount with a Gopro is enough to ruin the shot.

Seems like in camera motion stabilization can't hand the vibration now and therefore it is even more important to have the camera on the chest or the head allowing the body to take the shock. In fact I am not sure at this point that motion stabilization will work at all here.

All good and well untill we reached the shutter speed step. GoPro in particular depends on crist frames to stabilize the footage, if you introduce a lot of natural motion blur, then the stabilization starts going straigt in the trash bin... Going with a 3rd party stabilized like ReelSteady can help mitigate that but to a point. How do you make sure you get useable footage with slower shutter speeds then without using a gimbal?
@TheLoamRanger
@TheLoamRanger 4 ай бұрын
There's a balance to it. Isaiah nailed it with his footage, I think. A slow enough shutter to induce plenty of blur, but not so slow to fully disable his digital stabilization.

High frame rates don't need to mean low motion blur. Motion blur and high frame rates are possible, video games do it all the time. It's just hard to do with regular cameras. I'd argue that the same makes sense for action camera footage that is electronically stabilized. Slow shutter speeds and electronic stabilization look bad in my opinion, adding the motion blur in post isn't ideal but in my opinion still better than the nauseating mess that is electronic stabilization. If you have good contacts at insta360, you could even try to convince them to do it in camera, I'm pretty sure they calculate the optical flow necessary for it for stabilization anyways. :)
