2:46 Fun Fact: Because of the way water reflects light/colors, the color red🟥 is completely invisible in deeper waters. This makes the Red Bluster even more terrifying, since it could get way closer to you before you even see it.

I’m a bit conflicted about red’s design, the concept art shows her as an airplane like massive sea creature and that’s cool, but like how everyone else has said already she has a very toothless face and that’s very distracting in some shots, and as you mentioned she has eyeliner, I wish she had more a sea lion or even a horse like facial structure resemble an unicorn kelpie, that would have been cool
@tortis6342
@tortis6342 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's meant to look like eyeliner, I think the waterline of her eyes are just darker than the surrounding skin. It would kind of make sense if she was semi-aquatic, because it would likely reduce glare from the sun when she surfaces. Not by much of course, but the point is I don't think it's supposed to be a gender signifier.

@BAVy11037

That's true, but I didn't really get what the lasting consequences were or what was the price at all. You could argue that she affected the captain psychologically to tunnel vision on the killing even more but he did manage to change his mind in the end so he clearly wasn't under a spell of any kind. Idk I feel like they could have thrown away this whole part and just said that the hunters dislike her because they hate using poison because that's dishonorable

@@BAVy11037 I think what they were trying to achieve with the whole "them who see Gwen Batterbie won't see a good day hereafter" the whole like, sure she will give you what you seek, but it will mean the end of life as you know it, and playing into how Crow's undoing in the end is the poison, as it makes him let his guard down around Red, and ultimately bringing Red to the Capital is what undoes the way of the Hunters and the society as they know it, meaning that he won't see a "good day" again.

I really like crow and Jacob’s relationship, it reminds me a bit of Jim and silver from treasure planet Like you said their relationship is not perfect, but by no means as toxic as belos and hunter from the owl house, crow is a serious and brute man, who’s not loving and caring in a traditional way, but he did raise Jacob to be a good man and both do have a good relationship, Jacob doesn’t call him dad and just treats him professionally/as a mentor figure, but even Sarah who’s the closest to him doesn’t have the most cuddly relationship with him either Crow did like Jacob but didn’t know how to show it properly, aside from giving him his family’s title, and regarding physical abuse, I never got that he physically abused Jacob, when the crew said that he wouldn’t go easy on him I just thought that he wouldn’t sugarcoat his mistakes and just punish him verbally, is by no means a good thing but better than punching him I’m not trying to defend him and say that the actions of this obsessed man were justified, just that he was a complex individual who showed primarily tough love and only a few times showed more kindness by hugging Jacob and calling him his boy

I mostly liked this film. Something that bothers me is how no one goes out to the monster oceans anymore. Even the way Maisie talked about it in the end felt off. After thinking it over, I think because I prefer stories that encourage kids to learn more about the world. I honestly would have preferred Maisie to have a new dream of becoming a marine biologist, or the equivalent for giant sea monsters. Though, I guess the themes of living your life and not romanticizing dying heroically has value in its own way.

This might be something they could explore in a sequel. Finding a way so they aren’t practically landlocked but still respecting of the sea monsters and their territory. If we take it as colonizing it would be being allowed to travel over the locals lands and maybe collaborating with them without fighting them or exploiting them. Maybe they will find some other human civilization and hopefully we will learn more about the biology of them. Kinda like How To Train Your Dragon or Fantastic Beast I would love to have access to some sort of compendium. What species are there how do they look how do they live. But that might just be the biologist in me

I kind of agreed for a bit but, something about radically standing up and saying "your presence is not welcome here, this is not your land/sea" is deeply refreshing. Another parallel I noticed is Crow saying Macy is "all Vinegar", I looked it up and Vineger, as a slang is "having a disagreeable character or manner; crabbed; ill-tempered". It being used when Crow discovers her on board and when she nearly attacks him when she wakes up in the Ship's clinic. During him interacting with her pre-red, he seems nice to her, laughing and saying she has many similarities to her. Macy herself is no different, seeing him as someone to look up too and admire for all he's done. When he calls her that the second time, when she wakes up, she's the ground, begging him to let red go, while Jacob is holding her and stopping her from attacking Crow. He looks down at her, smirks and says "She's all Vinegar", this shows the development of these two in such as small way, as with Macy learning to grow and accept the big sea creatures, even the one who murdered her parents, Crow depends deeper intp the madness of clinging to that one idea, especially after he also loses someone, his son, his legacy, Jacob. Also when the phrase used a second time, it might be a stretch bug i like to think he said that, to Jacob atleast, could also mean "She's just as foolish as you were, Jacob" Also I didn't rlly notice Red's eyeliner until you pointed it out, I just thought it was shadow or inner eye markings 😭 but yeah I wished they kept some concept designs for her

I really enjoyed the way the film progressed, and the themes of acknowledging children's autonomy as a solution to generations of cyclical and systemic abuse. It defies the common assumption that children are objects to be controlled or punished as it suits the whims of flawed adults (I grew up in the US, and that assumption is pretty much standard, here), and presents us with the following statement: that the static nature of unchecked authority (aided by tools like propaganda, interpersonal abuse, etc.) can only be broken down with a fresh understanding and active defiance of it. And...that some people will refuse to listen or consider the necessity for change at every turn, so it might be necessary to move on without them. That's what so refreshing--at least, to me. I wish I had more movies like this when I was growing up.

I ❤ this film The eighteenth-century setting, the sea monsters, the moral, the character designs, that cutie Blue, Gwen F-ing Batterbie... Netflix has some great fairytale films, including this one, the Magician's Elephant, and Del Toro's Pinocchio (I was surprised to see Pleasure Island not as a decadent carnival, but as a Fascist cadet camp where children are turned into donkeys metaphorically, as beasts of burden that obey the regime and are sent as lambs to the slaughter. Sebastian Cricket, an author writing his memoirs who lives inside Pinocchio's chest instead of a heart, and the biblically accurate Blue Angel that replaces the Blue Fairy are also memorable characters. I also laughed a lot at a comedic scene where Pinocchio did a toilet humour show insulting Mussolini, the leader of the country himself!).

I must say I'm very appreciative that there's finally a video talking more deeply about The Sea Beast. It's a movie I've grown fond of, ever since the first watch. I could sense the moral, message, in it, but couldn't put it to words. And you could put out some light critique without being straight up hateful about it (like Red's eyeliner markings). I also hear way too many bring up that it's "just a HTTYD clone". Just because Red's facial structure is similar. The stories are nothing alike besides that basic theme of "protagonist changes society's view on (insert subject here)", which is used in more than just HTTYD. So, I like this video a lot! I'm even gonna give the movie another watch, I think.

The sequel is something I’m interested about. Because Jacob and Maisie’s story is pretty much complete, I can’t imagine a new adventure with them would be satisfying. Still fun, just a bit tacked on. I remember near the end, when the General sheaths her sword and says “I want to see how this war started”, as a good jumping off point, plus with Crow and Sarah still around, as a possible point to develop the story further, and could put Crow, if not on a path to redemption to say, but to be better as a place it could go.

The movie's ability to demonstrate the size of the beasts in some scenes was one of the many things that caught my attention. Oh, and if you want to see a 3D animated film with a style that can fit in the 2D setting, I would recommend the "Magicians elephant". It came out recently, and although I might not put it on the same level as The Sea Beast, I still think it's a solid film with a distinct visual style. It's pretty simple in terms of the story but everything ties together, so a lot of things that happen are there for a reason.

gotta love the historic inspirations, the 18th century style of this movie is very accurate! from the soldiers uniforms to the costumes, architecture and the ships, as far as they're adapted to monster hunting ofcourse. the inevitable is based on a 18th century frigate design, but a bit bulkiers, makes sense, whaling ships were also threemasters of sturdy builds. tho ofcourse against these "sea beasts" speed is probably more important, hence a frigate and not a cat or fluyt design.

The idea of not knowing how to feel about your parents hits hard for me. Nobody wants to see their ancestors as the 'bad guys.' Nobody wants to BE the bad guy. I'm from the American South. The confederates were wrong, slavery was wrong, and there is no defense for it. I am sympathetic to wanting your family to be on the right side of history, wanting to be the good guys. Losing sucks and being wrong sucks. They were still wrong. Tear down the statues of confederates, but leave the cemeteries alone. Those cemeteries are full of people who died for the wrong thing, and I think that's punishment enough, being victims of stupid racist ideology that ultimately got them killed. We tell boys and men their lives only have meaning if they throw them away and die violently, heroically. Men used to raise their sons with the expectation that they'd go and fight in wars, so they made it bearable by claiming it was honorable. It's not, it's tragic and stupid, especially when it's for a terrible cause. I tell people who want to go on about 'their heritage' that the southern culture they should care about is what the poor were doing. The food ways and dialects we're losing, the habitats devastated by companies that don't care. I love where I'm from because Cajun French is a treasure, and if you want to find something in your family's past worth preserving, you'll find it. But lying to oneself about who was in the right just to feel good about that isn't worth it. Mourn that they died for the wrong thing, and move on. You'll always find a gem or two somewhere in the past if you look hard enough.

A pretty cool video, thank you. I liked the movie but it left me with so many open questions... I would think the sequel (if it comes) may be about the bargain the Captain stroke as well as (hopefully) them finding out who decided to make the sea beasts their scapegoats and why - the ending did mention them no longer travelling to their area of the sea, and it did not seem that they really needed to go there for trading and such. ...though in a way, the "witches" foretelling came true already, it did cost the Captain "everything" already (his son, his crew, his legacy, ship and his entire way of living)...

I love this movie, and I feel like we could go back to this world with a completely different plot hook. Not unlike the pirates of the Caribbean movies We get hints that there is a war on else where, that someone once shot The Inevitable's captain and then there is Bartleby and their Faustian trades. Their steampunk tech for a mystical price. And then there was that -seemingly much larger than Red monster that sunk Jacob's parent's ship.

Hello! I would like to informally request a video on one of my favorite book series, "The Princess Novels" by Jim C Hines. It follows the adventures of fairy tale princesses after their so-called happily-ever-afters, primarily Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. I'd really love to get your take on the author's depiction of their resulting trauma responses, as well as the presence of LGBTQ+ characters and a physical disability later on in the series.

@@ronjaj.addams-ramstedt1023 I found a few audio versions. There's one set on Audible, which is more expensive but I assume can be accessed by any device with an internet connection. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both have CD-MP3 versions, which are significantly cheaper but with the drawback of needing a device with a CD drive. I think the MP3 file can be transferred to other devices afterward, but I'm not sure.

Not that I think generations of slaughter is OK, but I think the sea beasts hold some blame in this. "Large wooden intrusions in their territory." So what? They don't have noisy motors, and they aren't fishing (so no threat to food supply.) They have the whole damn ocean and they throw a fit about a tiny boat floating on the surface? And based on Red's behavior they are too intelligent for the 'territorial instinct' excuse.

Do we actually know what "shot first" though? Like at this point there's been ships hunting them for generations and I'm willing to bet they don't really know the difference between a hunting and civilian vessel & aren't going risk their lives to figure it out.
@courtneywoodbury5198
@courtneywoodbury5198 Жыл бұрын
I dunno... This doesn't really feel like a 'first shot' issue unless all sea beasts are a tribe of sorts that would take issue with even 1 death. Even then, a war that long doesn't have wrong on only 1 side. What was stopping the beasts from going 'Whoa jeez, stay away from those humans, they have nasty tempers. Just keep your distance. They can't swim very well anyway." I can totally agree with modern beasts not knowing/caring about the difference after all this time. But at the start, what reason did they have to care? I'm not trying to absolve humanity, of course, just saying. Of course, ALL of this is based purely on this video, so maybe actually watching the movie would make it clearer for me lol.

@Lucyan December yeah I kind of wish she had a more similar design to the beast at the start because I think a more angular design would make her look more intimating and help better subvert our expectations also I am kind of tired of all the good characters being this more smooth round kind of look probably why Sarah is my favourite character because her design the best in the whole movie
@lucyandecember2843

@@trixxart777 100% agree, the first monster had my favorite design and its a shame we didn't get to see more of it. Tbh the red blusters design felt.. empty, in a sense. Like whenever i saw it i wanted it to have more detail, or more edge or just, something that made it look more ferocious. As it stand the design looks like a giant bright red seal plushie, which, lowers the intimidation factor significantly. I think the great thing about toothless's design is how they managed to make him both really terrifying and adorable. His scales, the dark color, his claws and teeth, the rough texture of his body, coupled with these big slitted green eyes on a create with massive bat wings that you KNOW could desimate you in one shot made toothlesses design, along with his introduction really stand out. Likewise when he start switching over to be less intimidating, the change in his eyes aswell as the lack of teeth transformed him into an adorable kitten. The versatility of how he was designed is genius and something it really felt like the red bluster lacked. Her introduction aswell i think could have been more terrifying (tho the scene underwater where shes staring at them was amazing). The fact that you dont even see toothless the first time he's introduced, only the destruction he leaves behind is honestly genius. In a way, the red blusters design kinda remind me of the light fury's design. Where, it felt unfinished, in a way, like it felt like they weren't done adding detail to it, and because toothless allready exists, its difficult not to compare his design with theirs. His design has so much more grit to it than the lightfury and the red bluster. As it stands, both the red bluster and the lightfury feels like poorer reskinned designs of the nightfury, which is a diservice to both their characters, honestly. When creating a dragon, or a sea monster grit and roughness, i feel like, should be two instrumental parts of their design. Thats why, as you say, the first sea monster really stands out. Because it had that edge, that roughness to it. Aswell as, honestly, a much better introduction than the red bluster. Even tho it lost the fight, i felt much more intimidated by the short time it was on screen than i ever felt about the red blusters presence. The crab red fights also had a really cool design, but again its as you say, only the "bad" monsters that have the more angular sharp designs. All the monsters the characters have a positive interaction with all have this almost child toy plushie look to them which, again, i think is a real disservice to the movie. Also also! I 100% agree Sarah Sharp had the best design, we need more versatility in shapes when it comes to designing good guys!! .. idk where i was going with this it just became a ramble about how much i love httyd, pardon me😅
