Glad that you get to learn and practice Ashtanga yoga there in Austria. I'm based in Bombay, India and I've known about Ashtanga yoga since 2011 but never could do a regular practice coz the KPJAYI which is the only institution that boasts of being the source of Ashtanga yoga does absolutely nothing to spread the knowledge of ashtanga yoga among us indians. That school in Mysore, where most some of the most famous Ashtanga Yoga practitioners and teachers from all over the world goes to every year, has become so popular and commercialized that it tends to cater to people who can spend months in Mysore and can afford the fees. Hence you'd mostly see the Americans and Europeans thronging the streets of Mysore from Oct to March. Very very few Indian teachers teaching ashtanga here in india and the ones teaching are super expensive. Also Sharath Rangaswamy (who is currently worshipped as 'param guru') and his predecessor Pattabhi Jois who is called the "founder of ashtanga yoga" have only been traveling to exotic locations and major metropolitans especially in the west since the last 3-4 decades. They haven't bothered to conduct a single workshop here in any other city in india except Mysore where they run their shala. Exactly why I don't see Ashtanga Yoga as a spiritual practice anymore. Coz even the so called "gurus" of ashtanga yoga are interested in catering to the dollar and euro spending crowd. Hence many Indians like myself who aspire to learn this style are left with no option but to practice basic asanas with the help of an ashtanga yoga manual You are lucky to have been born in the West. As Ashtanga Yoga has become a material luxury, it is easily made available and accessible to you guys

Maybe you could approach this whole thing with some humility, respect and devotion. Why do you think the same Ashtanga Yoga is widespread in the west but very less known in India? If you have no respect for Pattabhi Jois or his institution, do you think your practice will bear fruit? Are you aware of how Pattabhi Jois learnt Yoga from his guru? Many Indians like you only aspire to be like Europeans because of your innate self-hatredness. Am I judging you without knowing about you?

I'm so sorry to hear that. Has the situation changed over the years? I live in Europe but I can't afford classes. There aren't any in my town, I'd have to travel about an hour by car to get to class, that clashes with my decision to avoid using the car as much as possible, and Yoga classes are too expensive for me anyways. I've been practicing Yoga following youtube videos for years and I have decided to start my Ashtanga Yoga journey, by myself. I know it's going to be harder and untraditional without a teacher, but what else can I do? Luckily today there are many free resources on the internet and youtube, and I'm going to get a manual. It's going to be a long journey but I know it's worth it.

Thanks for your inspiring videos! I also practice ashtanga yoga (but i's been only about a year) and I absolutely love how minimalistic it is - you don't need any equipment except the mat, and a couple of blocks.

Hi my fellow Ashtangi! I've also been practicing for a while now. So glad you are enjoying the benefits. If you ever come to Chicago, we have a couple of great Mysore style teachers at Yogaview and Yoga Now studios.

I love this! I relate so much to this, learning patience and compassion with myself and others especially. I have been trying to practice ashtanga, but it has been such a struggle to find the time and motivation to practice so rigorously, but I know at some point i will get into a daily practice. Thank you for sharing and helping to inspire others!😊

Thank you for inspiring me to start ashtanga yoga! I have been doing it for two months now in a weekly class and I am starting to make the same connections with life. Eventually I would like to be doing it daily at home also. :)

Thanks for your experience! Have you read any yoga books? I'm a beginner and have no idea what each yoga is meant for, and don't know what book to read to start with :)

I have a video about my favorite books on my channel although they are primary about ashtanga. My favorite one about yoga in general would have to be "the pure heart of yoga". I recommend checking out different yoga classes and going with the style that you enjoy most :)

In another video you said you practice for 30 mins daily, when I practice it usually takes me about two hours to do the full primary series, do you practice a specific secuence of the series or do you do some asanas of each secuence?

So which is it? Do yoga 30 minutes every day, or something else? I've seen that 90 minutes is a full, but maybe you mean, do 30 minutes every day, and maybe 90 minutes once a week or something like that?
