The concept of giving lots and lots of expensive jewelry comes from when women couldn’t have bank accounts of their own and would need some other way to have money and wealth to support themselves if their marriage fell apart. The song Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend talks about this.

I’m charged $300- $800 in NYC with health insurance, pcp doctors won’t prescribe me antidepressants long term let alone medication to treat my insomnia (3-12 weeks with 2-4 hours of sleep per night just to have a normal sleep week and then the cycle starts again) I haven’t been able to receive treatment I’ve needed for the past 3 years. I know everything in this podcast is supposed to help and encourage us to seek treatment but hearing all these things makes me want to cry. I’ve been trying so hard for so long to get help but it feels like American health care has failed me especially when I can’t afford the high cost of doctors, insurance, and daily life.

Currently applying to college at 22 years old. My boyfriend had a trust fund and graduated from school debt free with his parents support. My parents were addicts who blew our families money away. Our lights got turned off and they never saved a dime for college. I filled out fasfa yesterday and cried at the thought of wondering how I’m gonna pay for school and for rent. I’m gonna get it done. Maybe I’ll forgive them after I graduate.

Yessss grieving and re-parenting. Too many therapists just focus solely on CBT, etc., but these two things are way more important for processing trauma and understanding your past, which most of us never really learned (or were taught) to do.

2 years into my career job and i once tried to buy my wife a versace small purse. it was like $1000. i could afford it but it would be a hard buy. my wife was with me and she set me straight she was like hell no. which is why i let my wife monitor my impulse buys on bigger purchases. she won't if i brought home extra food or other small items. but any purchase more than $100 we have to clear with one another.

Not being able to shower, eat or clean after myself was the most horrible for me. Everything was just a huge task . so i stayed in bed in the dark until night fall and didn't even see any light all day. Going to see a doctor and getting medication saved my life. Looking back at this time always makes me tear up. The amount of pain that depressed people go through is unbelievable. I will be forever greatful to the people who helped me. Doctors, therapists, professors. And never underestimate what a kind word can mean for a mentally ill person. They can't love themselves so showing them love is a big deal

Thank you for this--very good timing for this episode. However, the "austere therapist" was traumatic for me when I was a teenager--we sat in silence for the entire session. I got nothing from it and dreaded each week. Now as an adult I can understand that method, but that was a bad experience as an adolescent with depression.

Love this show and I totally respect that some things you need to have some "skin in the game" to fully invest, but co-pays exist bc we have a profit-focused, predatory private insurance market. I know this is comment is going to come from some point of the opposite end of the spectrum so I don’t want it to come off as arrogant. That being said, I came from a well off upper middle class family but I had zero clue how to handle money. I was the forgotten child for the most part in my family and didn’t know how to be responsible with it when I had my son at 19. No one bothered to really teach me about how to handle it, be responsible, save, invest, etc. I’ve had to make a lot of mistakes financially to be aware and trying to make it better for myself, husband and boys. I’m aware of how lucky I was to have that childhood but it doesn’t always make children of affluent families really know what to do. We grow up with things getting paid for and in turn don’t know how to live in the real world sometimes. I know a lot of people have the opposite problem and I’m trying to be sensitive to that. That was just my reality growing up.

@grayonthewater
@grayonthewater 4 жыл бұрын
Mario Lipton She is extremely professional. Watch her videos before making a statement about her, I’ve been watching her videos for years. That’s not what she meant and she already made a video clarifying what she meant. She wasn’t calling them yucky she was talking about the action of taking advantage of people and hurting them which is yucky. Also, as someone with social work training, she handled Eugenia Cooney’s conversation as best as she could, she HAS to be affirmative and validate feelings and build trust with her for her to open up, which was the point of the video. She didn’t do anything to enable her or encourage her to self harm or anything.

Same. I also didn't realise how expensive college is?? It probably averages 50k per year now, what the heck. No wonder people are paying their student loan debt 10 years after their graduation because then you have to try to find a full time job while paying for rent etc. That's not including interest. I was complaining about having to pay 10k a year in Australia. Parents would need to have 200k to pay for college? I have no idea how that's possible for the average couple

Me too! I'm one of 4 kids in an um.. "lower-middle class" family. I knew since I was like, 10 that I'd need to pay for college on my own. It never bothered me until I realized how many of my friends' parents pay for their rent, tuition, credit cards, etc. I'm a senior in college now and it's still hard to fight the bitter/insecure feelings of comparison at times.

Great content as per usual! :) From my experience of 7cupsoftea, I would warn people against it. Not only is it somewhat expensive (for the services that you get) but it is also very uneven in term of service quality. In my case, the therapist I was assigned to did not give me the time I paid for. I wrote to complaint to customer service but never got a response. The chat is good but I wouldn't recommend the paid services.

I had to stop the video to look her up. Thought Kati looked familiar. Saw that she's been part of that Shane Dawson series where they made it appear that Jake Paul's this scary sociopath, even before seeing him. And I'm not even sure that's ethical - or legal - to pronounce someone something (even if it might be true) onscreen. For one thing, he's not her patient. Another, she discussed the case straight out of the DSM with Shane like they're mean girls gossiping. It doesn't sit right with me. If a licensed therapist suddenly comes up to me and points out right then and there my flaws and what I can do to fix myself, I would feel exposed and my privacy violated. I have a therapist and the thought of him making me his case study without my knowledge would gut me. She's been kookie after that saga, I don't feel comfortable taking anything from her.

The money game with men, is not because they want "to buy it", the reason they show money, is to demonstrate the ability to be a provider. That is kind of the way one shows social worth. Even if we believe and respect love, we all know that it is not going to work without demonstrating financial stability. So we humans have these weird rituals to kind of show the ability to do so, so we are at least considered as a partner.

It would be really cool if you can get an actual psychologist (i.e. someone who has their doctorate). Katie seems nice, and she certainly has experience, but it seems that she has a limited perspective on the field than someone who is an actual psychologist and in terms of earning potential and some other things. Psychologists can make way more than someone with an MA (especially because they can do psychological testing). Just a suggestion don't flame me >
