Unfortunately the anime cut out a part of the interaction that changes the meaning of the scene: After Genji brings down his sword and before the dust clears, in the manga he says "Next time it won't be a friendly warning...." before realizing Sagiri already took his sword. In the anime it just looks like Genji was trying to kill Sagiri.

@@Joseph-zg9il he might not be talented than saigiri but he still tried to protect her. The attack was on him but he pushed her away create distance between her and giant guy so she can flee. Also this is a medieval time, the fact that she was allowed to hold a sword and do a job in first place tells japan is way less misogynistic than Europe where you burned women for doing things other than household chores and maternal duties.

Actually I don't think he was gonna kill her i think it was possible scare tactic where he would swing his blade quickly and halt it, like you know anime does sometimes. He did push her out of the way which honestly quickly happens that many people notice it.

I know Genji is triggering a lot of people but we also gotta have to understand or atleast acknowledge the fact that this was simply the norm back then. They've been used to this way of living to the point where anything that doesn't align with these set of standards such as a woman being a samurai or executioner etc. are frowned upon. To us right now, these things clearly scream sexist/misogynistic but to people back then it was just how their way of life works; women are this and men are that etc. This is why Eizen and Genji are the way that they are. And this ideology is even more engraved into them especially since they're people of status so they would definitely feel strongly about adhering to societal standards. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all this to say that we should just give them a pass for their behavior, cuz there's definitely some personal agenda mixed in with the way they're treating Sagiri. I'm just saying we should also have to acknowledge this fact about society back then, and not just on the surface level.

Not Morgan making sure to write Nurugai down with the phonetics and Dani giving her a confused stare making her self conscious 😂😭. I was also really confused when Genji drew his sword on Sagiri, but I'm going to assume like Dani said he probably was trying to scare her or prove she wasn't skilled/aware enough to react. Especially considering how she just let him take the sword back. Anyways classic horror movie stuff, getting into an argument and not noticing the monster behind you 🤦‍♀

I kind of think that the remark about Sagiri being a woman was meant to be more of an excuse for herself to bow out and leave the island. She volunteered to be a part of this, but she had a moment of weakness by fainting and having to be cared and watched over. Unless she was a young man with no children, she/he wouldn’t be afforded a way out without his manhood being ridiculed and criticized, even in modern times, even if it’s the actual smart decision to leave and get away from all of this as possible. I’m not saying that throwing her womanhood in her face was the best way to go about getting Sagiri to reconsider, but, once it seemed she was sure she wanted to continue being a part of this, it was a toss up to either bully her off the island or test her skills and, if necessary, ensure that she isn’t a weak link for their group.

The Kikatsugan, or starve pill, was designed to help the ninjas when in starvation, being made from glutinous rice, sake, dried chickweed, ginseng, buckwheat, adlay and yams. Sanka, (Japanese: “Mountain Cave”) outcaste group of people in Japan. The Sanka are sometimes called the Japanese Gypsies, wandering in small bands through the mountainous regions of Honshu. They are not distinguishable in either physical type or language from the rest of the Japanese.

We got about 1000 other old school fantasy animes where women are treated much better than they were in historical times, so idk why its suddenly an issue(in the west mind you...surprise) when we got something remotely accurate. I like it because its gonna be more rewarding when Sagiri shows those types of people up. Also love how people instantly forgot Genji saved her this episode, and even in episode 3 when Gabi got injured.
@rogue8059
@rogue8059 Жыл бұрын
It's because you only realize he saved her on the next episode. The scene happened so fast and they weren't really emphasizing that part in this episode. And when they watch the next episode then they'll see, you gotta let viewers react with what they see at the moment. Even so, time period or not the fact that Genji didn't even try to understand Sagiri when she was explaining herself is the problem, she was even bowing to him and his response is like that tells how he really has little respect towards women. Like he only realized what she meant when he's already dying and she's tending him "like a woman should". I think we have the right to criticize a character, that does not mean it's criticizing the whole story

The great thing about Sagiri as a character is that Kaku incorporates the real attitudes and assumed roles of women from fuedal Japan, but uses it to build Sagiris character development in that she doesn´t accept being relegated to inferior roeles because of her gender. The social commentary here is not the inferiority of women but that the men around Sagiri who looks down on her as weak are wrong and doesn´t undesrtand what strength actually is. Gabimaru even points out to her that in some ways she is stronger than him, even if he is the stronger fighter of the two. It´ll come up again, so just trust that the author is doing several character studies at once, and Sagiri is the best one imo.

Thank god Sam recognises that Genji does have some valid points. Most reactors I've seen have just entirely dismissed everything he said because of the backwards, sexist part, when really all of the points that WEREN'T "you are a woman, therefore you aren't qualified and shouldn't be here" were pretty valid concerns.

20:10 “instant karma”. if you think someone should die Bc they don’t want a woman or children on this death island, then that’s messed up. Obviously he’s wrong about her being weak. But he had no ill-intent behind his words. Also he doesn’t care about purple clothes girl Bc she’s a prisoner and deserves to be there. Saigiri is his friend so naturally he’d wanna protect his friend. Him drawing his sword was a scare tactic btw, he was trying to kill her

So because it’s 2023 a woman can’t be shown in any form of media fighting through misogyny? Weird take, this is quite clearly part of her struggle that she has to overcome, understand being upset at the character but to be critical of the story for having misogynistics characters is pretty narrow way of view things. It’s ironic Jjk was mentioned because it pretty much drives the point home that misogyny is still a thing regardless of era but obviously during this time period it was worse.

The funniest thing about old-fashioned misogyny is the sheer confusion displayed when a woman wants her independence. Like: “what do you mean you don’t want to only have children and cook for the rest of your life??? Isn’t this why you exist???”
@melvynrabe-regis8175
@melvynrabe-regis8175 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the funniest thing about old-fashioned misogyny is not having the divorce stats, single parents and mental illness increasing. In the philosophical aspect everyone have his reasons and purpose to live, but in the biologically aspect literally every species since the dawn of time is drive by 2 purposes that are biological, survive and pass these genes on to sustain the species. So yes having children and having something to eat is a main component of why we exist. Species that have not passed their genes (reproduce) and/or had nothing to eat have literally became extinct species.

People who say this shit always seem to forget what time period these stories r set in. Women needed to live to have children to keep the population going since in those times, countries were closed societies. If women suddenly went to war, they'd be no one left to have children and the societies would collapse.

Let's not forget it's just an anime and Japan frowns upon identity politics so also on feminism. There's a reason why Japanese games, manga and anime are flourishing compared to the western media of the world. People are tired of identity politics getting shoved in their faces through the years. And there are plenty of badass women in anime that I truly love that handles swordmanship better than men in their respective anime. Like Saeko from highschool of the dead, Mikasa from attack on titan... Nowadays men get ridiculed for just breathing, so...

Misogyny is a tremendously misused word. Misogyny is an aversion towards women. A similar level of hatred like the ones nazis had toward jews. Genji is indeed a very rude guy with anachronistic mindset, to not seeing women as his equal, but he does not hate women. He is definitely a sexist but not a misogynist.

Also understandable, that yes there are lot of things that push that you are a woman message, But I don't really find it well a it eally a issue in this show its not a whole narrative the show pushes its only a one specific character arc for one charater in a certain upbringing so I don't really care that much but that's just me. I mean its clearly not trying to endorse the message either so I'm fine with it I'm usually fine to have characters put in a stance that is well not likeable as long as its handled well. I think this anime handles it well and i think anime in general handles stuff like that well if you watch a american movie or something it just turns in to a gender jerk fest where female empowerement just turns out to be shitting on the male. Here gabimaru and sagiri are on well the path to building each other up which is nice to see.
