First time using glulams and first time lifting a beam in a sensible safe way! All went to plan just about so looking forward to getting some rafters up and the roof on. 💪 The beams measured 90x360 and were around 6.7m long.

The quality of this work is astounding. The design decisions are exceptional. This short term building is moveable and saleable, and is a brilliant way of making a base for the the long term build.

If people have messaged you saying you are forgetting first fix, then they clearly didn’t watch very well, because you’ve explained that your boarding out the house, and the OSB is just the shear strength, and you’ve put it on the inside because it’s easier with the insulation you have chosen.

I hired one of these lifts to remove two old beams in my garage and to help build a car lift. They are amazing. As you described, I have used other methods in the past including scaffolding or hoists, but the time these save far outweighs the weekend hire costs.

Those beams are the same size as the one I lifted into my loft, on my own, without one of those cheat-lifts! I can't remember what they weigh, a decent bit, but much lighter than the equivalent steel. We used glulam because of the low weight, a steel would have had to go in with a crane and a hole rather than through the house.

Genuinely question… when you move it to its final location will it not bend rock shake bounce and become unlevel? is that something you just have to deal with and you will readjust after the move?
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 жыл бұрын
In the US they shuttle these across on the motorway, fully plasterboarded and everything, so I think as long as the chassis are level after the move they should be alright.

Incredible effort, it is good to see you working in a safe manner. It seems if you are working on something as big as this then the dimensions have to be spot on, the TRADA guidelines are very tight. I saw in an earlier video you were about 1.2cm out side to side. You can see how all this can compound when you add a second floor! About the rafters - on a vaulted roof don't they have to be over the ridge beam so as to avoid roof spread, I thought that was the idea of the beefed up ridge beam, to take the roof load. It is all very interesting but does get quite hard to follow at times!
@frankklein4872
@frankklein4872 2 жыл бұрын
No, the roof load is either hung from beam or sits on top.
@dannymurphy1779

@@frankklein4872 Cheers - but wouldn't they need collars if the rafters were on the ridge beam??? I thought the idea was to expose the beam.

Hi all It will be interesting when you finally relocate them into their final position , is there a limit on how much you can do before you move them ? . As a retired electrical contractor i can’t see any problem from that aspect, or even plumbing for that matter . But I’m curious about internal wall treatments , whoever knowing your abilities I’m sure it’s all been carefully worked out . Best wishes and kind regards to you all 😀👍👍👍
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 жыл бұрын
The idea is that we can get it all done first apart from a few trim pieces over joins once sited. Electrician has planned accordingly and we have put almost all plumbing on one side only. There needs to be a little thinking into internal finishes to allow for movement during the move so dry line rather than skimming and no tiling etc.

What's the total span? Did you have to get a structural engineer to approve the plans?

Hi, Just a thought, you mentioned about the Bridge. Was thinking if you have not had those two electric post taken down yet would it be an idea to asked the electric company to leave the posts for you to use for your bridge when they decommission them
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 жыл бұрын
👍 Definitely for a foot bridge or perhaps a quad but we need to look at a proper engineered steel bridge next year so we can safely take small tractors and cars over.

I think I've missed something...why didn't you stay with the trusses and flat ceilings?
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 жыл бұрын
Wish we did, way easier! Main reason is that the only way to have an open plan area is this way. Remember it has to split into two halves so the only way to do trusses would be too have a centre wall all the way down or possibly a very low beam. Hope that makes sense.

Imagine doing the house first, then trying to get sign-off from your Financial Director for a peace-and-quiet-office-bar thing somewhere out of the way. This way you lose the pressure to get the house done in a rush and get a cool play-space/guest accommodation/whatever thrown in.
