In the full interview Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen (Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All) discusses the making of those three albums, Cliff Burton's Death, Jason Newsted's relationship with Metallica, the missing bass on And Justice, his reaction to Jason leaving the band, his thoughts on the Black Album, Load, ReLoad, Anger and much more.
Metallica's lineup at the time of RTL & MOP consisted of James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich & Cliff Burton. Metallica's lineup at the time of AJFA consisted of James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich & Jason Newsted, who joined the band following the death of Cliff Burton.

Load is actually my favorite Metallica album. It’s easy to digest, cohesive, and has a lot of range. It’s their best work.

No shock value here. It's probably the one I've listened to the most, even though I was taken aback during my first listen upon its release. Load ain't for everybody, and it didn't fit the band name. I hate the cover and makeup, but love its western motif. Load had sinister depth and was bold like whiskey.

I guess in retrospect The “Black” album is sort of the peak of the mountain top following Justice. Where do you go from there ? The 90’s awkward transition into grunge made metal music lay dormant for a few years until about 1997. Load and Reload are to me a perfect bridge between those years.

If you take the best of both, it's very good. Some just don't work, to me. I made a CD of my favorite songs of both and named it Unload. I love it. 💪

in total 7 songs out of Load and Reload gets my time the rest puke 2 from load until it sleeps the 2nd is only due to my mom liked it RIP mom mama Said i hate the rest

My theory for why Load and Reload weren’t just one album is in 1993 metallica sued warner brothers for receiving low percentage of their royalties from their albums sales especially since the black album erupted, on a contract signed 7 years prior which violated California law. Metallica and Warner brothers agreed to a new deal that gave them much higher percentage points on royalties and allow them to get their masters back after a new 6 album deal. Metallica from that point forward has crammed as much music that could fit on a cd, every album is over 77 minutes long and features over 10 to 14 songs. Compared to the albums before the black album longest play time was 65 minutes with only 9 songs, and that was and justice for all. Ride the lighting and master of puppets only have 8 songs and average 50 minutes Load and Reload needed to just be one album to many filler tracks but because of new deal they signed they got paid alot more for their songs and albums

Load, Reload and St.Anger simply don't belong in an adult conversation about metallica, they are pure sales intent without love for the music.

Load and reload have some of the most heartfelt introspective material that the band has ever released. I personally prefer everything they did in the 80s over that era but if that was the only material they ever made it would still be a great rock group more in the conversation with Alice in chains and Soundgarden then the all-time greats lists
