@vinito19
@vinito19 3 ай бұрын
@@laultimarebanada I don't want to be gender inclusive. I don't partake in made up psychology. Sorry. To be comfortable with something outside of your control, you GROW UP. Their need to feel special is not my problem to solve. Also,when the person is standing right nex to you, like in your example, the right pronoun must be used. That "they" doesn't apply. Even if it was correct, does that mean that every other pronoun can be discarded because it isn't? Xer/xir/xor/xur and all that?
@laultimarebanada
@laultimarebanada 3 ай бұрын
@@vinito19 Yes, neo-pronouns do exist, they are rare in instances outside social media (they are tricky for people new to them, or non english speakers.) but yeah, people can feel identified by those too! Really, respecting other people's pronouns is how we as a empathic society works, we made up words to put people in boxes so we could categorize them better in our brains. This like the concepts "women" "men" are just boxes we as a social species made up in language to represent group of ideas. Why is so impossible for us as a society to evolve and categorize people in a different box for those that don't feel represented in the boxes mentioned before? It's not like the ideas of "blue is for boys and pink is for girl" is biological to our species, it's just how our society has evolved. I'm gonna tell you this very respectfully, I don't know what goes on in every trans person's brain, I'm not every trans person after all. But most of us aren't trying to feel special or unique or for a trend. If there's an increase in our generation of people identifying as queer, it is because of our society's growing acceptance, and more people are willing to identify themselves freely, thing that years ago wouldnt have been that easy at all. But I assure you, anyone that is trans for a trend, wouldn't keep the act for more than a year, gender dysphoria is very likely to get up to them. Believe me, no one would want to be trans, we just are.

I had a “they/them” friend throughout high school. Even though it’s technically grammatical correct for singular use, it only works in certain social situations otherwise it’s unclear. You have to constantly clarify and it gets even more confusing when you are talking about multiple people along with the person. This is why this pronoun doesn’t actually work, because in English you shouldn’t have to constantly clarify what you mean. The actual correct gender neutral pronoun is “it.”
@laultimarebanada
@laultimarebanada 3 ай бұрын
The reason "it" is not used is because it is dehumanizing in the use we have it today. Lots of people stopped calling animals "it" for that matter. Stop whining and be reapectful geez. Just a pronoun.

It's only grammatically correct when referring to a single person when the person's gender is unknown or ambiguous. It's analogous to the way that we use plural nouns for the number 0: I have 2 cups I have 1 cup I have 0 cups There's also the problem that people who use they/them are rarely consistent and still insist on using singular I instead of We.

You never use they for one person? Never? They walked up to the door. Are you now stricken with confusion because you don’t know if they have a dick or not? They can be used as a singular person. It’s been that way for as long as I’ve been speaking English.
@umbralflow6883
@umbralflow6883 6 ай бұрын
@@trappedinamerica7740 They is used when the person is unknown to you. Once that person is known you then use he or she. To use They/ Them in all cases would make conversation odd. Mind you your doing this when talking about someone who isnt there. So its controlled speech on behave of that person. So you have to hope whoever your talking to understand what you mean. Yes They/Them can be singular. But a lot of people have moved away from how the trans want them to be used which is to be used in all cases. No one is going to get use to going back to old english like that. The issue with They/Them is the confusion that comes with it that could have been avoided. In some cases it will work and others you have the person assuming more than one person. Trans only looked at They/Them skin deep and ran with it. They didnt think of the many uses of it. Now there will be times people think your talking about more than one person. Because thats whats wildly used. I could go around asking people if their gay and I mean gay as in another word for happy but most people wont see it that way. Grammar is always evolving to be more efficient. This only back tracks on that.

@umbralflow6883
@umbralflow6883 6 ай бұрын
Because you said "my wife said her friend" which mean the following sentence is referring to said friend and because you use the pronoun she it is implied to be a female friend. When you said she is nice, it is referring to the friend. It's alot harder to do it with he, him, she, and her because to use it you have to establish a person to tie it to which will be 1 person. They and them is different because it can be used in the plural and singular form. Singular being widely use in old english and faded out. I could call people gay and mean happy. Because gay ment happy back then. But if I asked today in modern times if you are gay. What do you think the response would be. Words change over time and they/them could very well go back to its old english usage. I doubt it because of the confusion it brings. Not worth the effort when she/him can be use with little to no confusion. It would have been better to use a different word other than they/them. Make up one singular pronoun but only 1 and stick to it.

Personally, I don't really 'believe' in some of these wacky pronouns but that's my opinion. I still respect these people tho. I'll respect and refer to you as whatever. But at the same time, I think respect should be earned. What I don't respect is people forcing their opinions on others and forcing everyone to believe whatnot. Here we are in 2024, questioning how many genders there are. (Technically there are 2 y'all)
@tomd96
@tomd96 3 ай бұрын
Gender is not the same as sex. Sex is what you are assigned as, biologically from birth, depending on the pair of chromosomes you happened to be born with. Gender typically refers to masculine/feminine in terms of language, the greek and latin languages that english took root from also have specific terms for people that were neither of these. These two are not to be confused with sexual orientation. If you wanna take the high road and go "there's only 2 genders," that is incorrect, grammatically and factually. Gender identity is a relatively new concept in the history of humanity though. The first trans person to legally change their sex was in the 1930s. In this case, they used the term "transexual", not "transgender", because their sex was changed to reflect their gender identity. I think part of the problem stems from how people have appropriated certain terms despite their original intent. Like the term "cis" has popped up to denote "sex same as birth", the creator of the word didn't want it being used to create a divide between transgender people and others. And now it used almost exclusively to point out the difference between them. Plus, it just sounds nasty. Like a cat hissing. Not a huge fan. I believe that respect should be earned too, but it's not all that hard to treat others with basic decency.

All of you say they've been a part of the English language for centuries, and yes, that's true, but why all of a sudden are they such a big deal? In simpler times we used she/her for women, he/him for men and they/them plurally or when a gender is not specified. Why can't we just stick to that?

Then your "English" teachers are spouting nonsense. Singular they hasn't been in regular use for ambiguous gender except for the last 50-100 years. Singular they for definite gender has only existed for the last two decades max. Third "genders" in other cultures are mostly a myth. What they actually were in most cases were different societal roles, like Eunuchs serving as personal assistants, or unique tribal roles which were assigned by tribal elders. The alternate genders of today have none of that and are just unnecessary alternates to the two actual genders. At best, they are personality declarations and owing to their frivolity and societal uselessness, should not require a reordering of language or customs. That and the fact singular definite they causes confusion is enough reason to resist it.

However I will give you some credit for the liberals and conservatives part because I consider myself liberal but also have a lot of unpopular opinions about the gender discussion. Let’s be real though, it is primarily liberal people that subscribe to gender ideology and conservative people who do not, hence the word “conservative”. Their outlook on life is far more traditional when it comes to gender roles. I also never said it was anyone vs anyone. The problem is that while "they/them" can be used singularly, it isnt used singularly in the same context as these non-binary (attention seeking kids) use it in. For example, if I refer to someone as "they" Im still refering to that "they" with the knowledge that they are a he or a she, not that "they" is entirely seperate to the he or she it is in reference to. Its not hard to understand, and the answer should always be No when kids feel entitled to dictate what adults can say just because some new identity or fad dropped.

They/them still doesn’t make any sense to me. If you are a guy people will refer to you as he or him and typically if your not present you would also be referred to as they or them. People love to over complicate things or make fun of people but it really is that easy. Same if you are a female you will be referred to as a she or her and typically while not present you may be referred to as they or them. Why people want to limit the language is crazy to me

@jawly_
@jawly_ 9 ай бұрын
@@AV-tq7lr I'm sorry, that's my bad. I didn't realize your first language wasn't English since everything else was fluent. We don't really have "packs of weed" (unless you count tins of pre-rolled joints) but we do have packs of cigarettes. If someone is smoking weed usually you just say they're smoking a joint, blunt, bowl, or are taking a bong rip. Those will usually get you where you need to go when talking about smoking weed. Why does it matter where the hormones come from? The voice is still changed getting what it was, and thus is no longer the natural voice. If you don't get my point, it's that making a negative comment about someone's voice, appearance, gender identity, etc is stupid, just like working about where the hormones are coming from or how natural something is. If his voice being natural didn't matter, then you wouldn't have commented about it in the first place. If someone's whole identity is being trans, then so what, who cares, good for them for being able to be comfortable and proud of their body and lived experiences. Not only that, but just because you talk about being trans like one in twenty times, how are you going to say that he's made it his whole personality? If you've ever actually watched his videos, he RARELY talks about it. There's no need or reason to get upset by someone just making a joke about pronouns.

The fact is that the only reason this stuff is so prevalent now is that now the media will threaten to label you as hateful or bigoted just for calling out people like Desiree who identified as a transwoman so he could enter a woman's only shelter and proceed to sexually assault a women staying there back in April or that boy who identified as trans so he could enter the girls locker room and sexually assault Sam's Smith's daughter or those two female prisoners that got pregnant after a transwoman was transferred to that women's only prison. Nah dude I hold no hate towards you at all as you can have whatever beliefs you want and I'll be praying for ya but no matter how much you have me or criticize my grammar the truth is that letting people do whatever they want just cause they want to live a delusion is a problem that's gotta be called out especially when it involves grown adults teaching kids that that's what they should be doing.

@jawly_
@jawly_ 9 ай бұрын
@@AV-tq7lr It's a question to get to the root of transphobia. The argument for letting kids get gender affirming care isn't just "Why do you care?" It's that doing so will ultimately help kids, and the data shows this. Not only that, but the rate of trans people keeps growing as it becomes more and more accepted. Saying that there is only 1% and that there will only be 1% is just silly and disingenuous
@AV-tq7lr
@AV-tq7lr 9 ай бұрын
@@jawly_ No the question is to make the other person feel silly for caring about a serious issue in today's society cause if you actually argued it you would look silly yourself. The rate of Trans people is in fact skyrocketing, not because of social acceptance but because of a political agenda that is being pushed by the left. When I was 12 I didn't even know what transgenderism was but now in this TikTok-controlled generation you got kids that are 8, talking about being born in the wrong body. Any parent that affirms to their child that they are somehow trapped in the wrong body and need surgery needs their child taken away. Along with this raise in trans people there is also a huge raise in detransitioners, but for some reason TikTok doesn't platform them🙂 Like I said there is a political agenda behind this shi. Also you say that "gender affirming care" will help kids but are you aware of the fact that lots of these kids end up being life long medical patiënts? Have you ever looked at scars left from these procedures? Are you aware of how little questions are asked to these teens, how damaging testosterone? Have you ever listened to a detransitioners' story? And how can you honestly say that a child who isn't old enough to drink alcohol is somehow old enough to decide to become STERILE. Yes, there is a huge risk that you will never be able to have your own children, and honestly if someone let me make that decision as a child I would resent that person for eternity. However it's not difficult to figure out why so many kids are ending up being dependent on medical care for the rest of their lives, cause huge pharma are the ones who are receiving the money lmao Medically transitioning a child is a form of child abuse and is never an ethic option. Most kids who feel gender dysmorphia grow out of that feeling and end up being homosexual adults, nothing wrong with that.
