In terms of early Elvis, before anything else, before any of the Ed Sullivan Show appearances before any of that, you've got to see this iconic performance of Hound Dog in early 1956 when he was about 20 or 21, and this is the performance that set off that huge religious and racial backlash that resulted in them sometimes only filming him from the waist up, including some of his numbers on the Sullivan Show appearances that happened much later that year and into the next year. This is the one. And there are several videos of this floating around out there, but most of them don't show the most important part, which is at the end, when after they've done their very short television version, always abbreviated from the actual recording which was already short, the audience was so into it that Elvis, without any warning to the band and they had never practiced it this way, kept going only he's slowed it down to half tempo, and the band was so used to him being unpredictable that they immediately followed along and it drove the audience nuts. You have no idea how controversial that was! When my mom and dad were watching this show with us. When she heard the announcer say Elvis Presley is next, she made us go to our bedroom. After that, she said we couldn't listen to him or watch him anymore. That's the way it was for a lot of families.

This one is considered the first "video" of what came popular in the 1980's with MTV. This is a clip of his movie Jailhouse Rock. Elvis exploded in 1956, and this was done in 1957. He was very young here, got to remember he ruled the 50’s, he was allowed to dance in movies he did but they refuse to show him waist down on tv shows because he said he couldn’t sing without dancing, hence the reason if he is standing still, you will see that left leg shaking, he simply had to move when singing, and SQUAREs couldn’t deal🤣🤣🤣….He was still a teenager when Elvis walked into Sun Records, Johnny Cash shortly after, and those ol timer’s toured together with Jerry Lee Lewis, and June Carter, and others before hitting it big…Of course, between Johnny Cash, and Elvis, sky rocketed in different directions in genre’s of music…

There are many facets to Elvis' music. There is Elvis in the beginning in the 50's - early 60's. Then he went into the Army for 2 yrs. When he came out the Beatles had stormed the country and the British invasion was changing the face of music. Elvis saw this and had to change to keep up with the times. His '68 TV Special is where Elvis really renewed and furthered his career. His music took a more serious turn where he started doing songs with deeper meaning and he turned to using a bigger band and a different blend of backup singers. This is where he became a great performer/entertainer and not just a R&R singer You have been listening to the Vegas entertainer. The early years of Elvis were songs with simple lyrics. When he started in movies his use of his vocal range started to broaden with singing songs written for the movies. It is interesting to watch his personal progression and the progression of R&R itself. Elvis took what black performers were doing and introduced it to the white audience. When that happened white performers in the U.S and Gr. Britain started copying. It is unfortunate though that the bigger band/orchestra sounds were abandoned for mostly guitars and drums and now there is so much use of the electronic sound instead of real instruments.

Shon, you don't look at all like that Madagascar character. Whoever said that was crazy. You're right about younger Elvis vs. older Elvis. I've always been a much bigger fan of young Elvis because he was so much closer to his roots in those days. Probably the best way to look at it would be as though there were 3 phases of Elvis' career. 1) There was Early Elvis, which you see here. From 1954 to 1958, he was what created the legend that is Elvis. Born in 1935, Elvis was in his early 20's during this phase of his career, and he was still developing his style and still had all the energy of his youth. 2) In 1958, he was drafted into the Army for 2 years. When he came back, he was still good, but his manager got him into acting in movies for most of the 1960's, and that was a more "sanitized, marketable" version of Elvis. John Lennon was greatly influenced by Early Elvis, and he is quoted as saying "Elvis really died when he went into the Army." I can understand what he meant, because after the Army, we never again saw the incredible force that was "Early Elvis." 3) Finally, there was Older Elvis, which is what you saw in some of the first videos you watched, where he was performing on stage in the white jumpsuits. Personally, I never liked this version all that much because you could see him physically declining as a result of drug use and so many years of the pressures of just living life as the biggest star the world had ever seen. Drugs and having to be "Elvis" are the things that eventually killed him at the young age of only 42.

Also, back then, they tried to censor Elvis because they said the way he danced, swinging his hips and gyrating, was contributing to juvenile delinquency, and was too raunchy.
