Fair to say the AFL's 20th team video had a glaring error. With some help from @CanberraAFLTeam and your comments hopefully the mistake has been rectified. Too bad it's not the only thing I've gotten wrong to start 2024.

Canberra close enough for the team to take the bus to Sydney and Melbourne, for away games. A potential cost cutting option, if they can’t pull a crowd.

LMAO I am playing the old Aussie Rules Footy (1991) game on the mighty NES while watching this, and it features teams from Canberra, Hobart and Darwin! It's a great game, way ahead of it's time!

Canberra would cost too much when considering how much will be spent on tassie and take too long to set up to be team 20. I have no doubt they can definitely get a team. But its more likley to be team 21 than team 20. Joondalup sounds like a better option realistically and wouldnt require much time or money to set up. Reducing the amount of years with weekly byes and getting 10 games a week faster. 😊

Aussie Rules was strong in Canberra from the start, owing to the relocation there of the then Melbourne-based Australian public service. Then the Raiders and Canberra Cannons overshadowed VFL/AFL through the 80's and 90's but I reckon it's time for a team there for sure!

@Japem555 Joondlaup Falcons. Western Australian football would be complete if the Falcons represented the northern Suburbs, Eagles are Central, Perth City (and apparently the rest of the whole state), while Freo are the South.

I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see the Raiders and an AFL team's schedules complement each other. I'd love to see them both play away games against the Titans/Suns or Broncos/Lions, and be able to make a weekend trip out of supporting Canberra teams.

If I had to bet on where the AFL would decide to put the 20th side, it would be Canberra. It is by FAR the most reasonable option....and it's not even close. The AFL have mentioned many years ago that they eventually wanted a Canberra team and that GWS would only play games there until then. There's absolutely NO way that the AFL are going to put another side in WA or SA, so you can pretty much rule out Norwood, West Perth/East Perth, etc. The AFL has absolutely nothing to gain by putting more teams in AFL-dominant states. The priorities of the AFL have always been to expand the game and attract new fans, hence why Gold Coast and Western Sydney got teams before Tassie did. The AFL were even hesitant to put a team in Tassie. The NT (in terms of population) is far too small for a team on it's own, but I feel that a Darwin/Cairns based team may be a long-term goal for the AFL. It would cost a lot more money to get it up and running though. The team would need to be based in Cairns for one half of the season and Darwin for the other half. Maybe 1 game a year in Alice Springs. Names like the "Northern Heat" or the "Northern Dingoes" would be good names in my opinion. But right now there is a high demand for a Canberra based team....probably more-so than any other part of the country. They would no doubt get bums on seats straight away. It would also allow GWS to focus more on trying to grow the game in Western Sydney.

"The AFL has nothing to gain in putting teams in AFL dominant states" True, I forgot the AFL doesn't like making money off new teams, they'd rather lose it. Relocate Giants there.
@rhysh2639
@rhysh2639 Ай бұрын
@@jackhudson2237 The AFL sees GWS as a long-term plan. People strongly criticised the VFL (AFL) for putting a team in Sydney back in 1982. For many years, the Swans had poor crowds and no one really cared for them up there; fast forward 40 years later and the Swans are a powerhouse team with a strong fanbase. I feel GWS would greatly benefit by playing all their games in Sydney and Canberra getting their own team. Putting more AFL teams in Perth or Adelaide is useless, as people there already support other teams.
@jackhudson2237

@rhysh2639 but teams is footy states will actually make money, GWS and Suns after 15 years are still losing money.
@rhysh2639
@rhysh2639 Ай бұрын
@@jackhudson2237 How will it make money? Is another SA or WA side going to attract new fans that have never followed the game before? Or is it more likely to attract fans from other established teams, therefore decreasing their fanbases? There's a good reason why the AFL is miles ahead of the NRL in terms of popularity nationwide; the AFL takes risks and expands in new areas, whereas the NRL doesn't.
@beebeenyneeee7692
@beebeenyneeee7692 Ай бұрын
@rhysh2639 you don't need to attract new fans. Games featuring WA teams attract a ton more viewers than a team in Canberra would. Meaning the rights deals are more valuable. A third team in WA also means way more people showing up for games than there would be at Canberra as well.

Let’s be honest, the suns and the giants will be good sides, but they aren’t getting the attention they deserve in rugby heartland. I say move the suns to the NT and the giants to Canberra, I know there’s a lot of controversy surrounding relocating teams, but let’s be honest, neither side has enough history for that to be an issue. So that leaves the 20th team, SA has gather round, so it has to go to WA, Joondalup specifically.

Yes, West Perth Falcons has to be 20. The AFL can't keep losing money on new clubs for these Rugby states. I really hope the Tasmania Devils are a huge success because the Suns and Giants I'd say have failed big time. Even if Giants did win a flag the people just aren't getting around them in GWS.

Yeah as a resident of Greater Sydney, it's all rugby league up here. I'm a league fan but I do occasionally watch the Giants when they don't clash with the Rabbitohs and they struggle to pull crowds. Everyone already goes for the Swans. It's like putting a second NRL team in Melbourne, they'd never draw the limited support away from the original team in the Storm, who average 20,000 a game.
@stormblessed2673

Well i'm not sure it's the failure you're claiming it to be. AFL is playing the long game, and apparently their growing auskick and amateur league participation in Queensland is the fastest growing in the country, particularly around parts in the Sun's area. The Sun's academy has also had some elite talent in recent years with quite a few debuting this year at the AFL level, and many more talented kids will continue to filter up to AFL level over the next 10 years. I don't know enough about GWS' academy and local auskick participation, but likewise the AFL is playing the long game so we got to give it more time before judging. They don't have to dominate news headlines in Rugby heartland to be a success, they can still be a modest but successful sporting team similar to Melbourne Storm here in AFL heartland, while growing a fanbase and encouraging local participation in Auskick/amateur leagues.
@rhysh2639
@rhysh2639 Ай бұрын
Yeah let's move the Giants and the Suns so the game doesn't grow in those areas, what a great idea! 🙄 People said the same thing about the Swans 30 years ago, look at them now, they're a powerhouse team and the game has grown in Sydney since. GWS and Gold Coast are long-term plans. They're going to take maybe 30-40 years before they get a decent fanbase.
